Cancellation policy-can this be right?

We were looking to book a one night stay at a Disney resort (perhaps Coronado) in late September. I asked via chat how far in advance you have to cancel to get a refund of the deposit and they told me 45. Can this be right for a hotel room only (no package)? That seems like a lot of notice. We have been doing Universal for the past few years and theirs is 5 days to get your deposit back.

We weren't anticipating canceling but that bothered me enough not to book the room. I just wanted to confirm that I was given the correct information.

You were given incorrect information. I had to cancel a room only reservation earlier this year and it was about 7 days before our arrival date. The following was copied from a Disney room only reservation confirmation that I have booked for later this year.

"In order to receive a refund of your deposit, including credit card deposit transactions, notification of cancellation must be received at least 5 days prior to your arrival date."

For room only it is 5 days. You were being given the cancellation rule for a package.

There are also different deposit requirements for room only vs. a package. Room only is a deposit of one night's charge plus tax. For a package it's $200.

:thumbsup2 Yep, the person gave you the cancellation info for a package, not a room-only reservation. And asking about the deposit amount is a good way to double check that you are booking what you want.

Thank you all. Pretty sure I asked the question again and said hotel only, not a package (because I suspected that was where the 45 days was coming from) and she again told me 45 days. But now I'm starting to doubt myself. Oh well - was able to book it online and saw in writing that it is indeed 5 days. Appreciate your quick responses!

Universal and Disney have the same 5 day cancelation policy? Hmmm. Makes we wonder.

It used to be that when you called sometimes you'd get someone who only knew how to book packages so no matter what you said, if you did the booking with that person you'd have a package. The advice then was to end the call and call back another time. But that was 15 years ago. I hadn't heard of that happening lately.

technically it's first night stay or $200 + insurance fee if you get the insurance. I don't think the insurance fee is refundable.

I guess that's so...if you book travel insurance. I never have, so I don't know anything about it.

I was just comparing the room only reservation to a package reservation. That's all.

If you get tickets does that make it a package or do you have to add dining too? Just curious for our best trip as we will do room and tickets.

My understanding has always been if you get room and tickets under the same reservation then it's a package. It's only "room only" if it's only a room only reservation.

I always book room only if we're staying at a resort.

"You can change or cancel your reservation without penalty up until 5 days prior to check-in. (6 days for online bookings.)"

I have done the same for most of my previous visits. One of the reasons I never felt the need to purchase trip insurance. With a room only reservation I could cancel so close to the arrival date with no penalty I didn't see a need.

But if you're trying to take advantage of a promotion like "free dining" you have to book a package.
