Canceling ?

I have a trip coming up in March that I may have to cancel. It's for 161 points. My use year is Aug 1.

Ok, it states on the member site that if I cancel outside of 31 days, the points will be put in the use year of the reservation. That would be use year 12-13, right? Does that mean they will have to be used by July 31 of this year?

I also have a Dec 2013 reservation. If the 161 points are put in this year, can I move them into the Dec reservation and free up 161 points from 13-14 use year?

Bottom line ... I don't want to have to use them by July 31.

While they will be in your Aug '12 use year, you can bank them into your Aug '13 use year. You can also then call MS and reallocate your points so you are using your banked '12 points for your 12/13 ressie and free up the '13 points with which you had originally booked.

Caveat: if you originally used banked '11 points to make the ressie, you would not be able to bank them to '13.

If you cancel 31 days or more before check-in, your points will be put back into your 2012 use year. You can bank any points that were originally 2012 points, so long as you do it by the end of March. If you had used any banked or borrowed points when making the reservation, they will need to be used by 7/31/13.

As far as changing the points on your December 2013 reservation, that depends. If you used any home resort points and booked during the home resort priority period, there will be restrictions on using any non-home resort points. Otherwise, they will probably be willing to work with you to make the change. This isn't guaranteed, though.

When ever you cancel at least 31 days prior, the points are returned to your account in the same status they were when booked.

So, it's important to know what the status of those points were when you made the reservation. As mentioned, any banked 2011 UY points or borrowed 2013 points will expire July 31st, 2013. Any 2012 UY points, will be bankable, as long as its prior to your banking deadline and possibly be ones that could be put as part of your December 2013 trip.

Points from your August, 2012 Use Year would need to be banked to use them for a December, 2013 trip. They could then be used to replace any points from the 2013 Use Year for that December trip. Those points could then be used or banked into your 2014 Use Year.
