Question? We have been doing A LOT of research for getting into DVC and SSR seems to be our best choice. We really don't care what our home advantage is so SSR wouldn't be a problem either way. We normally only travel during the summer due to school schedules. Ok, so I was using a points calculator and for a 7 night stay in August it would be 118 points for a studio stay. If I booked this at my 11-mth window but saw an availability at a standard AKL studio at my 7-mth window which is 113 points, what happens to those other 5 points?

The points would go into your current year point bucket and be returned to you. The best thing for you to do is bank the points for the next year and use then. You could also sell the 5 points via a one time use year transfer to another member for around $11 to $14 per point. If you do not bank the points they will expire prior to your next use year.

That type of situation is why the UY is important to many, if not most people. If you have a good UY and didn't borrow the points, they could be banked if need be as long as you're not within 30 days of CHECK IN. If you are, they would go into holding and could not be banked but you might be able to use them in another reservation at 60 days or less and free up other points to be banked. Another alternative is to book 1 day less or to book 1 day separate if you'd have points you would otherwise lose.

Let's say I buy into DVC that has an August UY and points were still available for 2014 but I want to travel in June 2015. What would be my 11 and 7 mth window and would my points fall under the hold status

Your 11/7 month window has nothing to do with UY. It's 11/7 months prior to your check in date.

Points have to be available in your account for your stay dates, not the date that you make the reservation.

You would do better to have a April UY, which is best for vacations between April and November.

Hold status happens when you cancel a reservation less than 30 days prior to your check in date.

ahhhh ok I get it. Thank you! I will look for something with a UY of April. Thanks :) ok so if I were a member now with an April UY with 200 points. I get the points April 2015 and make a reservation for June 2015. 11 months prior to June, I would have been able to make my home reservation in July that just passed, right? So 7 mths prior would be this Nov, right? So if at my 7 month window this nov, say I found a standard studio at AKL, and changed my reservation in November, what happens to my remaining points because SSR was 118 and AKL is 113 points for a 7 night stay. Please help if I am going about it the wrong way to understanding this. I know with a UY of April, Nov. is the last month I have to bank my points before I can no longer bank them. so if I make my change at the 7 month window which would be Nov. And that's my last chance to bank any remaining points, what happens to the difference of those 5 points when changing my reservation??

Extra points go back to where they came from. Remember you are looking at points based on your stay, not when you make the reservation.

If you are using April 2015 points, you have until the end of Nov 2015 to bank the extra points.

Ok thank you. But of course if I make a change last minute, than more than likely those points would be lost right because I would have made a change within those 30 days or less therefore getting put in "restricted status" am I understanding that right? If I know I'm not going to makr another trip before my UY is up, then those 5 points get lost?

Correct. And the same thing can happen with wait lists, too. You waitlist lodging that requires fewer points and the waitlist comes through 30 days or less, the points left over go into holding.

Thank you. More knowledge to have and take in.

IF you're looking mainly at June, then June is likely the best UY but April will work also. I realize you may have simply been giving an example. IF you have defined travel periods, UY can offer quite a bit of insurance. The difference between April and June for normal June travel is the yearly dues divided by 6 IMO. So roughly $1 per point minimum.

yes, our travel times will normally be in the summer months of anywhere between June through August and maybe once in a while let my kids miss school for MNSSHP or for Christmas break but more times will be summer

Can you explain a little more please.
For the example in question, a June UY gives an extra 2 months every year to use any points that can't be banked and an extra 2 months to decide on banking. Banking unused points should not be an issue either way for the situation stated assuming the travel patterns remain the same. Look at this as insurance. It adds far more protection for the none summer trips such as Xmas in this situation. It also allows you to run the wait list for Christmas up until 7 days out and still bank any applicable points if needed.
