canceling reservation: when does room come into inventory ?

We have a room reservation for dates for which there are currently no rooms showing available via the WDW website.

We plan on cancelling the reservation.

We have a friend who wants to travel the same dates and would LOVE to be able to pick up the reservation.

When we cancel it, how long until it will show up as available on the WDW website ?

I’ve heard of people’s rooms never going back into online inventory after they cancel. But you will never know.

How about calling & transferring the reservation to their name & CC? I'd have both of you on the line & give that a try. So there's immediate cancellation & rebooking by the agent on the phone.

I think this is what you need to do. I've also heard that the rooms may never show back up on the website due to overbooking.

I can’t guarantee this will work, but you could try adding your friend to your reservation, then calling back again to see if you can switch him/her in as the lead guest while removing your family from the reservation. In years past, the only way you could change the lead guest on the reservation is if the new lead guest is already on the reservation. I did this back in 2015 so I’m not sure if this would still work.
