We booked the Grand Floridian on points and may need to cancel...what is the time period without loosing points?

You can cancel anytime up to arrival date and get your points bacm. If you cancel 31 or more days before arrival - the points will be returned to your account as Reservation Points. If you cancel between 1 and 30 days before arrival, your Reservation Points will be returned in a Holding Account. If you cancel on arrival day, the points will be forfeited competely.

Reservation Points can only be used for stays at non-DVC options. They cannot be used at a DVC resort. Holding Account points can only be used for reservations made within 60 days of arrival. If the Holding Account points are also in Reservation status - they can only be used to make a reservation for a non-DVC option (Disney Collection, Concierge Collection or Adventure Collection) within 60 days of arrival.

Basically, once a non-DVC reservation is made using points, the points can no longer be used to make a reservation at a DVC resort again.

Since you are staying at GF (non-DVC), different rules apply. I believe you have to cancel at least 6 days before. I would check with member services for the official rule.

If you cancel in such a way that points go into a holding account you may also run into the problem of not being able to make reservations for the Disney collection within 4 months of the end of your UY except at the Disneyland hotels.

That should not be an issue in thiscase since the points involved are already in "reservation" status and can be used ONLY for a non-DVC reservation so they can be used during the last 4 months. That rule is for new reservations since DVC stuill has to have time to "pay" for the non-DVC reservation by a cash reservation thru CRO.

In addition to the other comments above, any new reservations using those points will also be subject to another $95 fee. That fee is not refundable.
