I have points in holding that I will probably not be able to use, so am considering renting. If a I make a reservation using these points and then the renter backs out, does anything happen to the points or are they still just holding-points?

Been there, done that.

They are still holding points. By definition, the holding points can only be used 60 days out from a reservation, so, depending on when your use year ends, it can be challenging to find a ressie that can actually be made. (Example: our UY is February and it is next to impossible to make a ressie 60 days out in the last quarter of the year, so unless we need a January reservation, we are pretty much doomed to lose the points). With only a 60 day window, I would make a rental non-cancellable. Then, if you CAN make a reservation, you won't have to deal with it again if the renter wants to back out.

Hi, mikesmom,
Fortunately our use year is Oct. so I still have some options. I had hoped to never be in this situation, but just before our recent grand gathering one couple had to cancel last minute due to a back injury. I have three upcoming reservations that I could try to do a point reallocation but they are all at relatively busy times and, since reallocation is really just a cancellation and rebooking, I am very doubtful that it will be possible. I know for sure that our upcoming Jan. trip can't be done. So, here I go down a road I would rather not travel!
