Cancel trip because of rising COVID rates?

And FEELING unsafe does not make it unsafe!!!

Based on published data......and math / science.........lets say there are 50,000 people in the Disney bubble at any given time. with a 1 in 378 positive chance you are looking at 100 people who "MAY" have covid. and of those 100......2% (2) may die. And 85% of those deaths are of people over 65.

Based on those facts.....my family is not worried about covid and we live our life. Yes we take precautions and practice good hygiene habits, but we do not avoid anything, or anyone. We wear a mask inside, and if the space requires it (like disney)

You do you, but most of that is not needed.
Sorry but your mindset about not caring and living your life is exactly why cases are exploding and hospitals will soon be at capacity. Not caring is not a good look.

It's not just about dying from it. It's passing it to others which continues the problem.

It absolutely is okay and normal to fear spreading the virus unintentionally. It is okay and normal to second guess your travel choices in the midst of a pandemic. It is okay to have empathy and understand both sides of it.

I think this is situation specific. I live in an area that gets a ton of tourists for our beaches. This summer, we avoided the beach because people were packed in and VERY close with each other, and sitting there for hours on end with ZERO masks. Versus being in a line at Disney for 30 minutes, spaced out at least somewhat, wearing a mask. I think it's hard to compare situations unless you look at context.
I hear that...makes sense

American Airlines said Tuesday that it will offer coronavirus tests to passengers, joining United Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines and JetBlue Airways in rolling out preflight testing. Tampa International Airport also said it will offer tests. The tests, which range from rapid tests at the airport that return results in minutes to tests that take a few days, allow travelers whose results are negative to skip or minimize quarantine restrictions in various destinations

doesn't look like southwest is doing it.

"For Select Destinations".....

AA - The Carribbean, Central America, Hawaii.
United - SF to Hawaii, NY to London

so I was determined to go. I honestly felt safer at WDW than I do at my local Target. The airports weren’t great, but the flight was.
But I do agree that it is likely safer than places here. We don't have a mask mandate and many people here do not wear a mask when out and about. We wear a mask every time, do not dine out, etc. so I do think it's likely safer there.
These are kind of to my point.....travel. *IF* a visit to WDW is actually safer and less dangerous than your home area.... and a *lot* of visitors feel that same way- then what happens when ALL those visitors from near and far (and 'much less safe than Disney' places) all converge at Disney? I think the one thing we know about this virus *for sure* is that it's HIGHLY contagious, and you don't have to look or feel sick to be sharing it with others. That's the main thing we know, other than it's spreading exponentially right now. So now my "safe" visit thru an airport and to Disney.... with (let's just say) 15,000 people from "unsafe" states..... what does that mean then?
Again.... I 100% get the questioning...I think that's wise to question things. And like I said before,I realize not all of us are going to agree on the answer here.

You can live life and take precautions and not spread the virus. That’s what most people must do. Wear a mask, wash your hands and be mindful. Not everyone can stay holed up in their homes for 2+ years.

So, when DH and I went last month it was just the 2 of us - and our boys are older anyway, 21 and 18 and when we go in 3 weeks the 18 yr old is coming with us.

I will say this about our trip in Oct:

* it was HOT at times with the masks on, but it was cooler than our usual June trips - and I brought disposable masks to swap out with my cute ones

* the lines did get LOOOOOOOOOONNNGGG....for example - one day (and we went Sun-Friday) it said a 60 min wait and it was all of 60 minutes but probably bc we got stuck in 2 cleaning cycles and they were only loading every other buggy at the time and now they're loading every one..

*most line waits were not as long as posted...even though they were crazy long lines bc they had everyone 6 ft apart, so you slowly walked through the very long queue..

*I believe when we were there (Oct 12-17 so it was a "holiday" week) that it was between 25-35% capacity but that's still way less than a regular day in June..

*As I said above, it was just DH and I, so no kids and I didn't have to worry about he or I touching everything and picking up germs - but every time we saw sanitizer getting on/off rides we used it and it was everywhere! and if one was out, there was another one farther down!

*we ate inside mostly at TS restaurants and will eat at them again in Dec. - and these were the first restaurants we'd eaten in since MARCH and we felt safe with what Disney has in place

I'm hoping that it should be even cooler next month so the masks will be quite easier to tolerate and maybe even keep my face warm if its cooler in the evenings! Honestly, we've been in February 1 time and the rest were June (other than this past Oct) so this Dec trip is our first and I have no idea how the weather will be but I'm hoping for cooler temps!

Everyone keeps asking if they should/shouldnt come and we can tell you how it was for us and what we experienced, but what we can't tell you is how the "Disney for now" will be for your family - like will you kids want to touch everything, will they use sanitizer, and how will they do standing in an hour long line (in the afternoon) if they're slowly walking or even paused for 10 min....are you comfortable eating inside, or would you rather be inside?

When we were there the parks closed earlier than they are now and we used it to our advantage and went back to the room, watched tv and then went to bed! We like to tackle the parks early and it worked really well for us!

Let me know if you have other questions!
Thanks for your comments! You provided good information for me to consider. Since we will be there from 12/19-24 (our first December trip), I imagine that there would be lots of people and the lines will be long. Our kids are not that small 10 year old twins and 14 year old so they won't be touching everything and are trained now to use hand sanitizer constantly. I guess it's a matter of how long are they willing to wait on a long line if it's hot. Hopefully December will be cooler! We would prefer to eat outside if possible so we would make an effort to do that. With the kids being picky eaters, it doesn't make sense to have nice meals at nice restaurants, even less now. I like the idea that the parks will close earlier and we can go back to the resort to relax and rest!

And there is my issue. Everything is very one sided. One side ignores the doctors and data that is not in lock step with certain agendas and what the media is pushing down everyones throat.

I would agree that your kids are old enough to not touch everything but I'm a self-admitted handrail toucher, so I was even worried if I could keep my hands to myself - and I did pretty good!

and I seriously can't imagine it will be "hot" - I keep hearing to wear layers and it will be chilly in the morning and evening but during the day it should be nice....which means it would be nice to eat outside too!

I do think that your dates will be busier than mine - we're going Dec. 9-15th so everyone has to remember that ALL lines will take longer and we should all be thankful that we're spending the holiday's @ Disney!

Here are the actual temps from Dec. 2019 for your dates - I think it looks great!

Have a great trip!!!!

Has there been any travel restrictions put into effect in Florida? were there any in the spring? I just don't want to arrive in a couple of weeks only to be told I have to quarantine upon arrival. Expect my state to have a requirement upon return. not there yet, but It feels like it's coming.

Just chiming in as I'm in the same boat. We recently made some changes due to the higher case numbers:

Garden view hotel room that doesn't require us to walk through a lobby or building
No swimming/hanging out on the pool deck where people don't have to have masks
Switched to Contemporary hotel so we can walk to the park
Not taking public transport (ME, bus, Uber, taxi)
Outside dining whenever possible.
Dining outside of the usual times - skipping breakfast, having lunch at 11am, dinner after 7pm

Honestly, we question ourselves daily if we should cancel or not. I've canceled 3 sets of reservations this year. Maybe this one will be next, but for right now I'm hoping our precautions are enough. Also we're able to self-isolate for 2 weeks after returning (work from home, groceries delivered).

No, not in Florida. There are no state mandated issues, nor will there be any.

Already cancelled early December trip. I was really looking forward to the Orlando Informer meetup at Universal, which I booked when I had to cancel my May trip, never thinking we would still be dealing with this. Traveling there is just not worth it to me at this time.

Our last trip was January of this year. The first day we hit all 4 parks I compiled video of me touching iconic handrails. Both me and my husband got the flu and I learned my lesson to keep my hands to myself. It came on so fast and we were down for the count until our departure. It wasn't until March when things started to get serious that I wondered if maybe we had Covid-19. Even the earliest cases weren't until Jan/Feb.

Good hygiene means next to nothing in terms of spreading COVID. You could easily have gotten it and spread it already and had no idea. I imagine this mindset is why cases are exploding. ‘Well, I washed my hands today and I personally don’t care about catching it’.

I have the opposite concern. I have trips booked in December and January and I am hoping they are not cancelled by forces outside my control. I went in July and August, staying on property for both trips, and did not have an issue. I follow all the mask, space and hygiene recommendations, and I quarantine before and after, on my own. I also live here, so I am not coming in from an active area, or possibly taking the virus back to another locale. I wish I could move my trip up a few weeks but I can’t. I had trips cancelled in March and May, and don’t want to go through that again. So long as Disney is open, and I am healthy, I will be there.

I totally understand people who want to cancel or postpone, as everyone has a different comfort level when it comes to risk, and different environments they live in as far as whether they could infect others in their home, or workplace. There isn’t a right or wrong answer when it comes to whether to go or not. Each person has to look at their own situation and make their decision, just as they will have to with holiday gatherings and such. All I ask is that everyone who goes follows any rules in place at the time.

How is questioning non-essential travel during a pandemic ignoring doctors? Imagine thinking empathy or being hesitant to travel is an agenda, or media narrative. Yikes.

I’ve been to wdw since reopening. This isn’t me telling people to live in fear or stay at home, but I can also think critically and understand that going is not the best idea and those that canceling are probably making the correct decision.

For those comparing WDW to a local grocery store, do you hang out in your grocery store for 6+ hours at a time? For multiple days? With Covid, they are finding that cumulative exposure matters and as little as 15 minutes cumulative exposure is the minimum time the virus needs. With that volume of people, you are bound to come in contact with someone that is actively spreading and you are at the mercy of that person...will he keep his mask on? Is he washing his hands? Is he the type of jerk that will lick a water fountain because it's "funny to freak people out" and "there is no way he is really sick"? Ive seen enough people doing selfish things, jerky things over these last 8 months that I am uncomfortable leaving my health up to the kindness of strangers.

To those that have recently had and recovered from Covid and think that offers protection, I'd still have some concerns about picking up a different strain. They are finding the mutations are spreading easier but arent likely to make you sicker. However, there are enough reports about long term effects and changes in the body of even those with mild or asymptomatic cases that leads me to think a second bout of Covid might be far rougher on my body than the first round. If I had already had a confirmed case of Covid, then I would be that much more careful to not get it again.

I suspect that I might have actually had Covid last December (was in contact with a lot of international travelers on a cruise). I was sick in a very strange way, which now seems to be classic Covid signs. I had both my flu and pneumonia vaccinations so the likelihood of it being either of those is decreased. Anyway, I have had some strange lasting symptoms since then that could be attributed to other things but also align with what recovered Covid patients are reporting. For this reason and others I am really trying to avoid getting Covid (again?).
