I’m not really sure why it didn’t dawn on me earlier but, I was looking at the Southwest website tonight to confirm my flight was still there, when a message about quarantining was displayed because I chose Buffalo as my outbound airport.
The link said, ‘Anyone traveling from New York....to any of our Florida destinations will be required to self-quarantine for 14 days upon arrival.’

yikes!!! I knew people who live in the tri-state area are currently under a mandatory quarantine but it never crossed my mind that this might apply to me as a Canadian flying out of Buffalo!!!

This point may be nullified for many reasons (border, safety, etc) if we don’t go but I’ll admit the mandatory quarantine had never crossed my mind. Another ball to juggle in this Disney trip that will probably never happen...

Any thoughts about this?

My understanding is that if you arrive in Florida coming from NY state, you must quarantine. You would also have to quarantine coming back in to Canada.

Edited to add that I believe Cuomo is considering a quarantine coming from Florida to NY also now that Florida’s numbers are escalating so much.

Yeah. Not worth flying out of Buffalo for this reason, assuming borders even open. Could you switch to a Detroit airport?

My biggest worry is having Covid health coverage in the States.

I’m not the Op but depending on when the flight is, our border is currently closed to non essential travel. There would also be a quarantine coming back into Canada.

I bought our flights before everything shut down and always fly out of Buffalo due to cost. I’m not stressing too much as I really can’t see this trip happening due to numbers in FL.

Also, NY is getting their numbers down (far, far less than FL) so there is a possibility the quarantine may not be extended. Currently it is until Jul 7 and our trip isn’t until Sep.

if we go I would see flight prices out of Toronto as we are 4+ hours from Detroit.

yes, I understand IF we go we would have to quarantine for 14 days. That won’t be a problem as I’m working from hone until at least September at this time and my daughter’s schooling will be at least 50% at home based on yesterday’s announcement.

Hope it works out how you want it to. Double check insurance. If you bought insurance when you bought your tickets (pre-Covid), your insurance might be reapplied to this trip. If you have to buy new, most insurance companies that I have heard of won’t cover you for anything Covid related at this point. For me personally, I wouldn’t want to travel to the US anytime soon without proper coverage medically.

Good luck!

Yes, I’m well aware of both of these things but our trip is almost 3 months away so planning just in case it happens!

We fly with Southwest so this is zero concern. I can cancel my flight up until 10 MINUTES before our flight and will be granted a travel credit good until Sept 7, 2022!!! Can’t beat that!! This is due to COVID but Southwest has free changes at all times. I never need to be concerned about flights.

I don’t think @vegs1 is talking about your Southwest flight. I think they are talking about whether or not you are covered for health insurance if you get sick with Covid travelling in the States.

Oh yes, I understand I would need to do A LOT of investigating into health insurance before crossing the border. We all will! Not a single one of us Will be immune to that once the border opens again, whenever that is. I’m thrilled that it’s closed right now and until things are more under control south of us I have great confidence the border will remain closed!!
As I say, I’ve done A LOT of planning for this trip (we go to Disney normally 2-3 times a year) so I am very aware of insurance, borders, safet, etc.

The one thing that hadn’t crossed my mind was the thought of driving 30 mins over the border, dropping off the car and flying out 2 hours later could = quarantine in FL for 14 days!

To me it’s no different than those who drive through any part of the tristate area to get to FL being asked to quarantine. In many ways my time in NY will be less than those who drive. I always assumed (yes, I know!) that the quarantine would be based upon residence, not point of departure.

It makes sense to me. You’re in a New York State airport interacting with a number of New York State employees and sitting on an airplane for a couple of hours with presumably some passengers who live in that State.

When we drive to Florida, we’re only in New York State for an hour and a half before we hit Pennsylvania and we don’t stop for gas or food. I’d still assume we’d be subject to quarantine in Florida just from driving through the State. But I’m not 100% sure of that.

The wording of the order is

"... all persons who enter the State of Florida from an area with substantial community spread, to include the New York Tri-State Area (Connecticut, New Jersey and New York), to isolate or quarantine for a period of 14 days from the time of entry into the State of Florida..."

Flying from is certainly sufficient to meet that.

OP-wow, we are also booked out of BUF, never thought of that..:(
THANK YOU!!!! So many responses here made me feel like I was silly for not thinking of this! I fly out of Buffalo numerous times a year but this is new to all of us so it just hadn't crossed my mind. I think as Canadians we just see it as another airport in a nearby city, not flying from a former 'hot spot'.

Thank you for helping me realize I wasn't the only one who slipped up on thinking of this!!

IF our trip happens I'll cancel our Southwest flights, take a travel voucher and then purchase new flights out of Toronto. That being said, it will take a miracle for that to happen even if the border opens and we can get travel insurance and more. I was able to secure park reservations today but I just don't feel right now (or in the foreseeable future) is the right time for our family to visit FL.

I wouldn't sweat it too much. From the DVC owners forum here it sounds like Florida is unlikely to extend the 'quarantine' past July 7 - and even if they don't it appears to be based on the honour system depending on your need to comply with the edict.

I've also booked to fly out of BUF for our Nov trip if it makes you feel better, and we're intending to go so long as the Canadian 14 day quarantine order is lifted and our travel health insurance is valid.

Yup, we fly out of BUF often as well..and we are booked with SW in August. I just kept thinking about the border closure for driving over, but you have opened my eyes!

I was also thinking to just take the SW credit for next year and go out of GTA and also booked my park days yesterday, but at this point Im really second guessing going:(
