Canadian worried about US/Canadian relations

Actually I had a problem with a gas station last year. My ds & I went down to Florida to clean up my dm & df's winter house. On our way back we stopped to get gas and were refused. They would not take our card (a US credit card) and wouldn't release the pump. We were 2 women alone and it was not fun at the time. Now this happened last year before the war so I am not sure what would happen now. It would be scary now I imagine.

As far as I'm concerned you Canadians are great. You have and always will be our friends. I hope your trip goes well in WDW. If you need to see how this American will treat you, come on by and I'll show you American Hospitality like it should be. WELCOME TO MY COUNTRY, TO ALL YOU CANADIANS WHO WANT TO VISIT US. I AM HONORED TO HAVE YOU HERE. Friends.

I was watching the Yankees-Blue Jays game earlier. During the playing of "Oh Canada" the camera caught a couple in the stands holding up a flag that was half the Canadian Flag and half the US flag. I thought it was really cool :D

I make it a practice to assume that every individual is a good person and to never think that this person necessarily believes the same as the government. Canadians have been good to the US in the past and one little tiff won't make me believe that Canada suddenly hates the US.

I hope that you have a great trip.

You mean to tell me we are not one country?!?
After all - we are North America (the North part is Canada and the America part is the United States... )

Grog - you should have seen the 2 flags *tied and waved together* after Sept 11 everywhere - now THAT was cool!!!

Oh gosh no, we don't hate the US - heck we have Canadian soldiers fighting on the front lines in Iraq - now THAT is friendship...we are participating in the war without formally supporting it...ahhh politics...

As for the US hating Canada? NEVER...where else would WDW get their monorails from? ;) (they are made by Bombardier out of Vancouver, Canada)

I don't think that we, as individuals can hold others responsible for the decisions made by their countries. So, Canada, as a country, chose not to aid the US in this war. That is their perogative, and I certainly would never think of giving a cold shoulder to our neighbors to the North. You are very welcome here, and I hope that you have a wonderful vacation.:)

Well, folks, I 'm in for it now! Not only am I coming down to Orlando in less than 21 days, I'm Canadian, AND a Quebecer!! 8th generation Montrealer, to be exact...dd is 9th, but ironically, I'm the only one in my fam who can speak French!! Anyway, just so you know, the morons who started fighting in Montreal at the peaceful protest at the Embassy, were actually restrained by other protesters, it seems there are always a few "professional activists" who show up at these things...oh yeah, and then a hockey game broke out!lol!
I LOVE Orlando, and am hoping to make it my new home(just like eeyore0062!) Let's leave the bickering to the politicians, I'll bring the Tim Horton's coffee, Poutine, and Steamies...can you explain this whole "Krispy Kreme" thing to me???
PS
Not trying to trivialize things, just wanting to elicit a smile from friends
pps - Something my dd7 said last week, ready to laugh?!
"you know Mummy, if GIRL'S were the bosses of the world, we wouldn't be having any wars!!"
God Bless and keep all those in conflict from harm

Out of the mouths of babes! Such wisdom for such a wee one!

As for Krispy Creme Donuts, they are very popular here in the US. They are very light, airy donuts, and there really is nothing quite like them. There is a Krispy Creme donut shop on 192-East past Celebration, next door to Chilis and Walgreens. If you have your car, make sure to check them out. They are also available at some of the resorts, but I haven't seen them on property. I know that Courtyard Marriott in the Disney Village has them at their counter service, though~!

Hope to have you as a neighbor in the Orlando area soon!

I heard somewhere that one reason the Canadian government took the position it did was the ongoing provincial election in Quebec.

They were afraid that if they supported the US it would give a runaway victory to the separatist PQ who are up for re-election in an unpredictable race.

There was some polling done that indicated english Canada would have swung around to support the US as the British eventually did if the government had taken a leadership role and declared support for the US.

For those familiar with Canadian history it could have been another "conscription crisis". I think this is why the US didn't push to hard - they don't want to see Canada split up either.

I sent a letter of protest to the PM and got an interesting reply:

To the Prime Minister

I am writing to express my displeasure in your governments lack of
support for our American and British friends.

We should be providing them with whatever support they request
including combat troops if required.

At the very least we should be providing full moral support for their
right to defend themselves in the pre-emptive strike on Iraq.

Dear P**** G****:

On behalf of the Right Honourable Jean Chrétien, I would like to
acknowledge receipt of your e-mail regarding the conflict in Iraq.

The time you have taken to write is appreciated, and you may be assured
that your comments have been noted. As you may be aware, the Canadian
government made it clear over a period of several months that Canada
would require the approval of the UN Security Council if we were to
participate in a military campaign. When military action proceeded
without a new resolution of the Security Council, Canada announced that
it would not participate.

We have ships in the Gulf region as part of our participation in the
fight against international terrorism. Our troops will continue to
perform indispensable tasks as part of Operation Apollo.

Canadian policy towards Iraq continues to be motivated by our concerns
about Iraq's weapons of mass destruction and the humanitarian situation
of the Iraqi people. Canada has already begun to contribute to
humanitarian assistance for the people of Iraq and is working closely
with international partners to determine how best to support a
multilateral effort of post-conflict reconstruction.

Again, thank you for writing the Prime Minister.

I am really sorry that happened. I think it is disgusting. Whether I agree with the war or not, people are people and I don't agree with what was done. I think everyone should be looked on as a friend. I have several very close friends who are Americans, and as far as I can see they are the same as I am. They bleed, the pull their pants on one leg at a time, they have worries and families. I love them because they are people not because of the war. And I wouldn't hate them because of the war either. I know people have a right to their own opinion but when the yelling and insulting of people results, then they need to learn a few manners. When does the bullying stop if no one says or does anything?
