Canadian intrested in DVC please help!

You're welcome. Part of me is still stunned that we even did it, given that we had to make a decision right there. Our biggest consideration was would we really travel that far often enough to make it worth it. (Seven hours in the air, not including layovers doesn't appeal to me that much) But, the lure of Disney is just too much. I can say that we are really considering the GCV at Disneyland. Amazing, we've gone from not totally sure about DVC to 'addonitis' in a flash.

Can you get any direct flights from there? We can get direct five hour flights out of Calgary. We are at the point right now trying to mull over how many points we will need without having addonitis too soon:goodvibes

Thanks for the help on the payment qustion everyone.

And I want to say Hi to everyone from Alberta! :)

I was born in Grande Prairie, but most of the family lives in Edmonton/Red Deer. Some in Calgary.

I call myself a "Southern Canadian" living here in Houston. But I miss it up there, well the summers at least. ;)

Remember, If you finance through Disney you loan will be denominated in USD and your payments will be due in USD. As the exchange rate moves your monthy payment will move. With the change rate at near historic levels, you may want to lock in that exchange rate and get a loan denominated in CAN$.

Yes everyone seems quite happy with their chice to buy. I am sure we will to should we take the plunge...it is just such a big decision. A little scary but with the dollar being so good now I giess now would be the time. So after you sign on the line there is no trouble dealing with DVC even though you do not live in Ontario? With the laws and such? For sending info and what not?

No problems at all. The only restriction appears to be on selling points.

There are no direct flights from Edmonton. We have a lot of options on connections though. Air Canada through Toronto or Denver. Westjet through Toronto. United through Chicago or Denver. Northwest through Minneapolis. US Airways through Phoenix. Delta and Horizon also fly but you have to back track to Las Vegas or Seattle. Almost all the flights are about 7 hours in the air with a 2 hour layover.

When we bought, the flight time was a factor in our points decision, because we knew we would be more likely to go no more than once a year and sometimes every other year only, so we "cut back" our original plan to 200 points so that we would be staying about 10-14 days each time we went.

Of course now they've announced GCV and Hawaii, so the rethinking has begun.

Ok ...there is a restrictions on selling your points if your Canadian. Does this mean if you ever wanted to sell your DVC you are unable to? I never heard of this before...or am I misunderstanding? :confused3 Sooo many things to learn....:scared: My husband and myself always found that to be the comforting thing about DVC that you could always sell it if you absolutly had to.

My apologies for being unclear. Disney can't sell points to you at your home. My understanding that there are no restrictions on you selling your points to someone else.

Ok, now I have a question. We are right in the middle of this right now. We started the process in September and our first payment is due sometime in November. We now have our finance in order.

So my question is how did you pay it off? Did you wait until the first bill came or contacted someone to do it? If so, who did you contact.

(sorry to hijack the thread for a moment)

We called down to get our balance and let them know a cheque was on it's way.

Oh ok thank you that worried me or a second....lol....:wave2:

Ok...need more help....:) My question is if you purchaced your points in lets say ...in August for argument sake.. When January comes to pay annual dues the first year are you responsible for paying for the entire year or do they just figure out how much you would owe for the amount of time that you have been a member? THank you thank you! :woohoo:

Well I found out something new today. Being from Alberta I already knew we could not request information unless we were onsite. However I found out today we cannot even pre-book the DVC tour because we are from Alberta. WE have to book while down there.:rolleyes1

There is some kind of withholding tax issue for non-US owners. The buyer may be required to withhold 10% and submit it to the IRS unless you fill out the appropriate paper work. It is outlined in IRS Code Section 1445. It's all about the US government getting its cut of any capital gains.

Every January you pay your annual dues for the whole, upcoming year. If you purchase part way through the year, you will owe a pro-rated portion of that year's maintenance fees at the later of the start of your use year or when your unit is available.

To give our experience, we purchased in May 2007 and got an October use year, and our unit was available on Sept 1, 2007. We had to pay 3 months maintenance fees (since our use year was later - Oct - than when our unit was available). Our bill for the maintenance fees arrived at the start of October. In January 2008, we will receive a bill for the whole MF for 2008.

Had we gotten a March use year, we would then have paid 4 months MF for 2007 (from September 2007 to December 2007). I don't know for sure how it works if your unit is available when you purchase and your use year starts before you purchase, whether it is prorated from your purchase date or not.

This is sure alot to take in. Do you get to pick your use year or do they just tell you when it is? Oh and one more thing. Okay you can book in 11 months at your home resort. Now is this 11months till the day you arive or do they actually just go by the month so say i wanted to book october oct 25th of next year. Would I have to book 11 months from October 25th or would Nov 1st be concidered 11 months away because it goes by the month??? Could that have been anymore confusing????:guilty: Did anyone get that???

It's 11 months prior to the checkout day so you could book Oct. 25 on Nov. 26th the year before.

I am adding onto my questions because I forgot another one. When you finance through Disney is the interest rate locked in? Thanks Again
