Hello ~ Since we Canadian's drive on the wrong-side of the road, would I be too ambitious to drive in England? I'm not interested in driving in the larger cities, however I would love to drive around the English country side and prehaps from London to Stonehenge. Blessings ~ Sandra

LOL!

Sandra, I think one of the big differences we notice between driving in the UK and in the US and Canada is the scale of everything.

Okay, I admit it, DH pretty much always does the driving when we're abroad, so I'm speaking as a UK driver and foreign passenger, but I'd say the 'different side of the road' is more of a cognitive challenge in getting used to switching your brain round to thinking left/right-hand drive, whereas the space (or lack of it) on UK roads and parking lots, etc. can be tricky at times, even when you are used to it. Parking in the US / Canada is such a treat for us because there's always such a lot of room! Country roads here can be very narrow but attractive; the motorways are easier but can be deadly dull.

I do all the driving whenever we're away - I've never had a problem with it. My DH however...he tried driving once, in Sweden. Shortly after setting off he went to change gears and nearly opened the door instead! :rotfl: There was also some confusion as to which side of the road he should be on after making a left turn... :rolleyes1

Like I said, I do the driving now... :teeth:

I would say it is easier for us to go to the US or Canada and drive rather than you drive in the UK, not that I want to out you off but when we are in the states on the other side of the road we will be in automatics so dont have to worry about gears aswell. Also like a prev poster mentioned everything is smaller here, parking spaces, roads and the cars so the problems from you would be the opposite but imho harder.

The country lanes you would enjoy driving around for the scenery wont allow you much time for viewing as they are narrow and windy so you would have to concentrate on driving and not looking around!

Compared to driving on Highway 401 and the other highways around Toronto driving in England is a piece of cake! (including our motorways). Our other roads however, you'll find things happening a little faster than in Canada. I find the road signs in the UK far better than those in Canada and the US, but then again, if you miss a turning in Canada you just go to the next one on the "grid" and catch up.

Compared to France, Germany, Italy etc we're all pussycats.
