Canadian Buffoon's Disney With a Teen Vacation - 08/13 - The Wrap

Oh, hello there! Yes, I found my way back to your trip report after surviving the sands and camels of Dubai. But it looks like I completely missed an update. Too much celebrating over the holidays, I guess. And although it's very late, Happy New Year!

Unfortunately, like I said, it was a long line.
Pretty much exhausted every possibility.
You can try one if you like.
But I guarantee we already said it.
Hmmm..."If it fills with flour. Sum of all Mills"...no? Too punny? Well, a valiant attempt, I suppose.
The robot arm can swing you up, down and side to side
in a much greater arc than traditional rides can manage.
It can even flip you upside down.
OK, serious question here. I've thought about doing Sum of all Thrills before, but I'm wondering what a "drop" feels like on this simulator. I may have mentioned before that my favourite coaster is BTMRR because I like fast and turns, I don't mind upside down, but I'm not a fan of straight drops (e.g. Splash Mountain, not for me).
Oh, yeah.
And afterwards, this happened...
I've said it before, but I do love the idea of the younger/older comparison pictures of Kay. I really need to keep this in mind for my next trip. My oldest DD is nearly 16 but was 8 when we first took her, so it would work out well. I guess the trick is to look at the older pictures before the trip and pick some good locations to remember?
We're from Canada." I said.
I know to just leave it at that.
I've found that if I say "Winnipeg",
I get blank stares.
If I say "Manitoba" the province that has
Winnipeg as its capitol... I get blank stares.
So I usually go with the safe "Canada"
and expound if asked for more details.
:D I do the same. Of course being from Newfoundland, I have the added problem of pronunciation. Even if they've heard of Newfoundland or have some idea where it is, most people south of the border (and plenty north of it, I'm sure) pronounce it New-FOUND-lind or New-fin-lind. So, in case anyone is reading this and wants a free elocution lesson (yes, I did have to google "elocution" before I wrote it :P), it's pronounced New-fin-land, rhymes with understand. Don't ask why we pronounce "found" as "fin", we just do :)
1. Obvious one. Which park are we heading out to next?
Magic Kingdom
2. Remember we have to be at the lobby for check out at 2:45am.
So... Is the next park our last of the day? Or not?
Number of parks done this last day, 2, 3 or 4?
You save MK for last, so 2 parks that day.
3. I experience yet another first time snack.
And it's another fairly common one.
(I had to. I promised I would.) What is it?
churro
4. Oh, take a wild guess on what time we leave the parks for the night.
And just to make things extra easy for you...
(in order of lateness open)
MK open til 11, DHS open til 9:30, Epcot open til 9, AK open til 5
I'll say 9 (to try beating the fireworks crowd to the bus)
5. We've been lucky with the weather... so far.
So, do you feel we stay lucky?
No, it rains. Another reason to leave a bit earlier than close?
6. What do you think? We've done one ADR today already.
Do we have a dinner ADR?
Yes. You want to finish off the trip with something special.

I know we've already said it, but,

Happy New Year dearest!!!! party:

At one point, he and his wife Smidgy were at Teppan Edo
and he decided to "test" the hot plate.
Only Nebo would do that.

Oh Nebo. I don't know you, but I like you already.

And that surprised me.
I guess I was under the mistaken belief
that most of you had followed me from there.
I'm a little shocked... and humbled too,
that so many of you have joined me in
this little adventure.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Nope, we just love you!

Hmm.... Something is different.
There's a disturbance in the Force.
I popped open the door and...
Yep. There IT was.
Hanging from the door knob like a garrotted condemned criminal.

Our DUD* info.

*Disney's Un-magical Depress
(Full disclosure: Magical Depress is a Nebo invention.)

UGHHHHHHHHH WORST. THING. EVER.

Am I not gracious?
Of course I am.
Tell me how gracious I am and get free bonus points.

You are sOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOo gracious!

"Dad? Are we going to do Sum of all Thrills today?"

Oh YEAH!!! Nailed it.

Here's the course we came up with:

DSC09737_zpslymnwryq.jpg

Awesome! We did this for the first time this year too, and had no idea what we were doing  what did you call your jet ride?! We did a coaster and called it THUNDER EAGLE :rotfl2:

Oh YEAHHH!! Nailed another one. Also, Kay has great taste in cars.

Maybe it's because I've driven more than twice as fast
in Germany on the Autobahn.

Did you drive like a freakin MANIAC to fit in with the locals..?! Driving on the Autobahn is one terrifying experience.

DSC09740_zpso8kwg1by.jpg

Hmmm... Maybe she's trying to tell me something.
Sheesh. Some things never change...

DSC09740b_zpsm2mqf8ci.jpg

I am living for these photo creations!!! SO adorable. I bet my mum would love to do this, if she ever comes along with me again I'll have to share your idea :goodvibes

We quickly walked
(quickly, because our ADR time was fast approaching)
over to Italy and announced ourselves to the host at Via Napoli.

OMG I AM DOING SO WELL. :cheer2::banana:party:

There! Are you happy?
Most of you guessed we'd eat here.

Oh, right. Take my victory away from me why don't ya.

Shortly after being seated,
a lovely young lady named Gabriella asked us if we'd like some water.
We chatted with her for a bit and she was an absolute delight.
This was only her third day working unsupervised.
And the only thing she was allowed to do was serve water.
And boy! Did she serve us our water!
Any time a glass was down to 3/4 full,
she'd walk briskly over and take the glass away.
Moments later she'd return with another full glass.

It got to the point where I was a little afraid
to take a sip of water for fear of running her off her feet!

:rotfl2:

For all you Via Napoli fanatics...
prepare to be disappointed.
I did enjoy the pizza and, if memory serves,
(it seldom does) Kay did too.
But.
Was it amazing? No.

Booo. It looked good.

You want amazing? Try Chicago.
Or heck, come to Winnipeg.

Oh ok, be right there!

There I bought a shirt for my Dad,
which he just got the other day, for Christmas.

Wait, you went all the way back to Spaceship Earth at Christmas to give your Dad a shirt? Why didn't you just give it him while you were there? ;)

"A small town in Jersey, just outside Philadelphia."

WHAT! This is crazy. Maybe you were part of a big elaborate prank

Moments later, we disembarked and headed off to the bus stop,
passing New Jerseyites and New Jerseyans left and right.

:rotfl2:

There was a family from (I assume) New Jersey already waiting.
While we waited, we were joined by other Jerseyans.

:lmao:

I'm giving you these things! 4 free bonus points to the following:

2. 2!

3. Churro!

4. 10:15pm! (You need to watch Wishes, and sleep is for the weak!)

5. NO!

6. YES!

And that surprised me.
I guess I was under the mistaken belief
that most of you had followed me from there.
I'm a little shocked... and humbled too,
that so many of you have joined me in
this little adventure.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Only the bottom of your heart??? I would have thought a thank you from your spleen was in order

P.S I followed you from your solo TR which I found when planning my trip!

Morning came bright and early on August 26th.
Well, maybe not "bright".
At least not for me.
And maybe not all that early either.

Isn't it wonderful when the writer starts off
by basically lying to you?

When it's you Pkondz it is truly wonderful...

For some reason, it had taken me a while
to get to sleep the previous night.
Maybe because I was out gallivanting around taking pictures.
Maybe it was the three or eight mugs of Coke I drank
before going to bed.
Hard to pinpoint a cause, here.

I'm guessing this was you about then...
image.jpeg

Okay.
Step one. Panic.
"Last day! Last day! Barricade the door!
You'll never take me alive!"
cid:BA1340AE-F0BE-491B-AF88-2D6564028B5E@mobilenotes.apple.com

I thought that was wooting? Now you tell me it's a panicky final stand?

image.gif

An hour later,
(interspersed with me running to the food court for drinks)
she was ready to go.
We set out and got to the bus stop at 10:40am
The bus arrived at 10:41am.
One minute.
It was longer than we were used to.
But I am nothing if not understanding.
I let it slide and chose not to berate the driver
for his tardiness.
Am I not gracious?

You were like this towards the driver right?
image.gif

Of course I am.
Tell me how gracious I am and get free bonus points.

The most gracious person/animal/plant ever to inhabit the earth are you oh wise and magnanimous Pkondz

"If the ride was cold, it would be Sum of all Chills."
"If you ate pickles while riding it would be Sum of all Dills."
"If you had a prescription it would be Sum of all Pills."
"If you died on it, it would be Sum of all Wills."
"Put a feather in it. Sum of all Quills."
"It goes really high, but not too high. Sum of all hills."
"Costs money. Sum of all Bills."
"Lots of garbage in it. Sum of all Fills."
"Underwater. Sum of all Gills."
"Makes you sick. Sum of all Ills."
"Worse, you die. Sum of all Kills."
ad infinitum

image.gif

You can try one if you like.
But I guarantee we already said it.

Better than Jacks. Sum of all Jill's.

It costs a lot of dough. Sum of all Mills.

You can count on it. Sum of all Tills.

Is that enough???

I dunno.
We've all driven (or been driven) that fast on the highway.
Yet with the banked track, it seems faster, doesn't it?

And yet.
Maybe it's because I've driven more than twice as fast
in Germany on the Autobahn.
It seemed to be not as fast as I remembered it.
Oh, well.
Still a fun ride.
But. We weren't gushing about it afterwards
like we were after Sum of all Thrills.

Didn't I say the same thing to you in my TR?

We quickly walked
(quickly, because our ADR time was fast approaching)
over to Italy and announced ourselves to the host at Via Napoli.
Within moments we were seated.

image.gif

There! Are you happy?

image.gif

We finished our pizzas and chased them with gelato and sorbet.
I think Kay had the vanilla gelato while I had the lemon sorbet.
Now normally I'll take gelato over sorbet any day.
But lemon trumps non-lemon gelato.

Correct.

Looking back, it's inexcusable.
Four minutes!
But at the time, I think I was just too bemused to notice.
Or worried about the weather.

I don't know how you let that travesty go unpunished - surely that warranted another letter to Bob?

1. Obvious one. Which park are we heading out to next?

2. Remember we have to be at the lobby for check out at 2:45am.

So, do you feel we stay lucky?

6. What do you think? We've done one ADR today already.
Do we have a dinner ADR?

1. Hollywood Studios

2. Not your last park - you go on to close the trip out at Magic Kingdom making it a 3 park day.

3. Carrot cake cookie at DHS?

4. You leave MK after Wishes which was at 10 so I'll say 10:20

5. You stay lucky as I had all the rain when I was there the week before you.

6. No ADR - you end up somewhere like Casey's.

And only two updates left?? Is there some sort of 12 step program I can sign up for once it ends? A bereavement group of sorts?

Fantastic update, as usual!

We've never done SOAT, but maybe, after your review, we'll give it a shot this summer. I think the simulator rides at Universal Studios has kind of left us a little gun shy... At the end of the day there we are all done with simulators. Similar to your reaction on orange MS, or tea cups.

I remember the "old days." Nebo (how I came to your writing....the banter was hilarious!), LaLa, Zzub, DelsWife (Rest In Peace)..... This was where I came to take my mind off some very difficult times when we were going through my son's evaluations, diagnosis, and therapy. I would laugh, look forward to our trips to the World, live vicariously through you all..... Ah, good times. And now--- I can still follow along with you! Thank you for taking us with you!

Dawn

I think I like the train version best. Stick with that one.
Embellish, too.

Just walking? You must've been taken completely by surprise!
Poor thing!

A year?!?!? :faint: Good grief!
How long ago was this?
And how are you getting around?
Walking boot? Cane? Crutches?

Ugh. I wish on any of those. If the complete rupture is confirmed by tomorrow's MRI, I will have surgery in the next week or so and have a cadaver tendon put in to replace the one I blew. Yep, one year of recovery time. I am not allowed to bear any weight on it. I have a boot right now because the MRI people don't want a cast, but that will change after tommorow, I can't walk at all...I have a "knee walker" which is essentially a 4 wheeled scooter that you put your knee up on and scoot with the other foot. It's heavy and doesn't have the tightest turning radius, so it's kind of a pain in my tiny house, but I honestly don't know what I'd do without it. I injured it on Dec. 14, and have been sleeping on the couch since then since I can't take stairs. It's misery. I finally ordered a new memory foam mattress that I'm going to put on the floor in our den to sleep on because it looks like I'm in this for the long haul.

Anyway....not to be a downer!! I'm thinking I've been inspired after reading your trip report to write one from our last trip in June. Seems like so long ago, though, don't know if they'll be interest.

Love all your updates so far!! I felt the need to comment and say that I am in fact from a small town in NJ right outside Philadelphia...Seems like we are all dis enthuiest here

If you wear a lot of lace, The Sum of All Frills.
If you're a fan of football in New York, The Sum of All Bills.
If you stop at a dive bar and get drunk, the Sum of All Swills.
If you are a tadpole counting your breaths, The Sum of All Gills.
A Whale looking for a meal, The Sum of All Crills.

By the way, I TOTALLY agree with you on the pizza at Via Napoli.
(I'm hiding behind the couch as I type)
I think the food at Portobello is FAR superior.
And Chicago pizza is the best, followed closely by Detroit Deep Dish. That cardboard crud they call pizza in New York doesn't hold a candle.

I stumbled on these things called "Trip Reports".
No kidding? Sounds interesting. Where do you go about finding them???

I started reading his TRs and we became friends.
And it's because of his TRs and his encouragement
that I write mine.
Cool!

i.e. It's his fault!!!
And now we know who to blame.

At one point, he and his wife Smidgy were at Teppan Edo
and he decided to "test" the hot plate.
Only Nebo would do that.
Ouch. :headache:

And that surprised me.
I guess I was under the mistaken belief
that most of you had followed me from there.
Um... nope. I'm not even sure how I got here to begin with. I must have got lost and for some reason, I'm still here.

I'm a little shocked... and humbled too,
that so many of you have joined me in
this little adventure.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Ok enough of this sappy crap.

Isn't it wonderful when the writer starts off
by basically lying to you?
We've come to expect it.

Okay.
Step one. Panic.
"Last day! Last day! Barricade the door!
You'll never take me alive!"
panic_zpssttlc14x.gif
Deny, deny, deny

Step three.
Pretend it's not real.
See!!! That's what I said! If you didn't see it, it isn't real!

Did you ever notice that the last day in Disney
is equivalent to holding your fingers in your ears and yelling "la-la-la!"

"You have to go home, now."
I can't hear you!!! La-la-la!!
::yes::

What time do we need to be at the front desk tomorrow?

2:45am.

oh.

Sleep is overrated anyway.
There will be time to sleep on the plane!

Of course I am.
Tell me how gracious I am and get free bonus points.
You're just a teensy bit gracious.

Unfortunately, like I said, it was a long line.
Pretty much exhausted every possibility.
Ok... just out of curiosity, was a certain someone else getting involved and saying them or was she just rolling her eyes?

You can try one if you like.
But I guarantee we already said it.
If it was a restaurant it would be Sum of all Grills.
Or if it was in the post show for Test Track it could be Sum of all Grilles.

By now, you may have guessed what our first ride was.
And yet, not many of you guessed it when it counted!
Hey! Wait a minute, I'm changing my guess!!!

Ready?

It's a Small Mexico!

I knew it!!! I should have gone with that one to begin with.

Hoooooey! That sucker is fun!
Might just be one of the best rides in Epcot.
I'm glad you enjoyed it! I've never felt too motivated to try this one, and therefore, I haven't. I'd kind of like to try it, but only if the line is short. I just have enough issues with motion simulators that I can't quite bring myself to stand in line to do this and maybe feel like crap.

Time for the FP.
We swiped our bands and entered.
Shortly thereafter, Kay had designed this:
Nicely done, Kay!

Feminine... yet bad-a... uh.... mean looking.
Dad approves.
::yes:: I get where you're coming from.

I dunno.
We've all driven (or been driven) that fast on the highway.
Yet with the banked track, it seems faster, doesn't it?
Um... not really.

Oh, yeah.
And afterwards, this happened...
:scared1: And the insurance premium doubled.

This was only her third day working unsupervised.
And the only thing she was allowed to do was serve water.
And boy! Did she serve us our water!
Any time a glass was down to 3/4 full,
she'd walk briskly over and take the glass away.
Moments later she'd return with another full glass.
Well, she takes pride in her job if nothing else!

Really? I can get a $6.00 shake at 50s Prime Time,
but can't get a $4.50 lemonade?
(Those prices are insane when I look at them
from outside the WDW bubble.)
Great point. Inside WDW, not too bad. Outside WDW, highway robbery.

For all you Via Napoli fanatics...
prepare to be disappointed.
I did enjoy the pizza and, if memory serves,
(it seldom does) Kay did too.
But.
Was it amazing? No.
I want to come down on you... but I can't. I love Via Napoli. And I think part of the love for it is the fact that it is better than the other pizza around down there and it is definitely superb to the typical generic theme park pizza. We've got a few local places that are very similar to what we can get at VN and we enjoy eating there. So yeah, I think in other regions and areas, it might not compare quite as favorably. But when it comes to places to eat in WDW, it is by far one of my favorites and I'll go there for some pizza any time!

Because when she's not happy, oh boy.
You'll definitely not be happy.
Well, I might still be happy. You on the other hand...

We also had worked up a bit of an appetite from the walking,
so a visit to Karamell Kuche was in order.
Well, we didn't really have an appetite worked up,
but who cares??? It's Karamell Kuche!
Reason enough for me!

"Where are you from?" I politely enquire.
And she, of course, replies:
"A small town in Jersey, just outside Philadelphia."
That's all Jersey is...

Of course.
I have it now.
Everyone, with the exception of Kay and me,
is from Jersey.
I get it now.
But it begs the question.
If everyone from Jersey is here now.
Who's minding the store back in Jersey????
Who cares? It's Jersey. :rotfl2:

So we got to the dock at 2:52pm and had zero wait.

We arrived at the bus stop at 2:52pm.
That's a fast boat...

1. Obvious one. Which park are we heading out to next?
MK

2. Remember we have to be at the lobby for check out at 2:45am.
So... Is the next park our last of the day? Or not?

2

So, do you feel we stay lucky?
I certainly hope so... so yes.

6. What do you think? We've done one ADR today already.
Do we have a dinner ADR?
No

And for some reason, I have this nagging feeling that I just put up a big goose egg on points.

Sorry to hear that you’re dealing with this. It will get better; really. I seceded in snapping one of my Achilles Tendons right in half a few years ago and had to deal with very similar issues including a multistory home.

How are your stairs finished?
Ours were carpeted which added a bit of cushion so I learned to get up them on a foot and a knee. Got right good at it too; could put the knee of the bad leg up about two or three steps then bring the good foot up to match and then shift the bad one another two or three and so on. The hand rails allowed me to easily cover the work of balancing and supplied good leverage to get up and down afterward. Coming down was optional; either reversing the process or going down on my rump (half decent, half slide, a little fun at times and fairly quick for that matter).

I had a similar scooter as well. Mine didn’t have any steering mechanism, you just rocket it back on the rear wheels and quickly shifted the front in the direction needed. You may find that quicker than steering at times yourself. I could also hang a crutch or cane off the handle bar to transition more easily from wheeling to sitting if space was tighter; say like getting into a car, my work cubical or maybe a restroom stall (well, you got’a think about these things). That device also folded up pretty flat and with little effort so I’d just drag it behind me up and down the stairs.

Just a few observations from someone that’s been there to give you some different ideas on dealing with the predicament. Needless to say, I wasn’t very happy to so impacted, but my outlook was kind’a like: “well, I can’t do it that way anymore, so now how do I get it done now”. You’d be surprised how quickly you can adapt. Good luck and may this heal up far quicker than you expect.

Thank you so much for your encouragement and advice. I wish our stairs were carpeted. They are not only wooden, but VERY steep as our house is 116 years old. I have resorted to crawling up steps to get into my home and into others. Sometimes I just stare at steps trying to figure out how in the heck I'm going to conquer them. So frustrating. I'm a really active person so this is driving me nuts!

I started reading his TRs and we became friends.
And it's because of his TRs and his encouragement
that I write mine.
what a really nice tribute to your friend Nebo! And we must thank him also, for encouraging you to start writing TR's yourself! :worship:

Yep. There IT was.
Hanging from the door knob like a garrotted condemned criminal.

Noooooooooooooo! Run away!!!!!!

Am I not gracious?
Of course I am.
Tell me how gracious I am and get free

You are the Grand Marshall of graciousness ::yes::

You can try one if you like.
But I guarant

I'm not gettin' on it...it's the Sum of All Nill's :crazy2:

Feminine... yet bad-a... uh.... mean looking.
Dad approves.

Very cool, girly, yet fast!

Maybe it's because I've driven more than twice as fast
in Germany on the Autobahn.
It seemed to be not as fast as I remembered it.

There! Are you happy?
Most of you guessed we'd eat he

No! Not happy!

Kay had the Pepperoni

Is it just me or did they get kinda chinsy with the pepperoni? She got like 6 on her whole pizza...minus the random hidden Mickey pepparoni

but I don't think the chocolate lasted very long.

Of course not, it was hot! Chocolate melts in that kinda stuff

A small town in Jersey, just outside Philadelphia."

Sounds like the Universe is trying to tell you you need to visit small towns outside of Jersey for some reason!

Looking back, it's inexcusable.
Four minutes!

1. Obvious one. Which park are we heading out to ne

Is it obvious??? Let's see.. If I were in Epcot and were wishing to park hop I'd take the boat or walk to HS, take the monorail to MK, so considering you were getting on a bus I'm going to say you went to AK to try and get one last ride on EE in before park closing

2. Remember we have to be at the lobby for check out at 2:45am.
So... Is the next park our last of the day? Or not?
Number of parks done this last day, 2, 3 or 4

3. I experience yet another first time snack.
And it's another fairly common one.
(I had to. I promised I would.) What is it?

I'll go with the masses and say churro

4. Oh, take a wild guess on what time we leave the parks for the night.
And just to make things extra easy for you...
(in order of lateness open)
MK open til 11, DHS open til 9:30, Epcot open til 9, AK open til 5

I'm thinking you could watch Wishes at MK one last time.......but I'm going to say you leave the park at 9:30

5. We've been lucky with the weather... so far.
So, do you feel we stay lucky?

I think it rained on your parade and wishes got washed out

6. What do you think? We've done one ADR today already.
Do we have a dinner ADR?

Yes

We wanted to try this ride, but not if the line was too long.

Is this at Innoventions?

When the ride was over, we caught our collective breaths,
collected our belongings and headed out for our FP.
You know it's a good ride when you excitedly talk about it afterward.
Which we did.

How have I not heard about this ride?!

This was only her third day working unsupervised.
And the only thing she was allowed to do was serve water.

She's selling herself short. I'm sure she can do more than serve water.

Really? I can get a $6.00 shake at 50s Prime Time,
but can't get a $4.50 lemonade?

The definitely need some help with the definition of a "beverage."

But.
Was it amazing? No.
You want amazing? Try Chicago.
Or heck, come to Winnipeg.
This was good, don't get me wrong,
but it wasn't as good as I thought it might be.

I'm kinda glad to hear this. I've always skipped Via Napoli when I'm at Epcot because I can get a decent pie here. We've gone with things like Biergarten or Marrakesh because we don't have many German buffets or Morrocan restaurants where I live. I'll try it someday, it just hasn't been my first priority.

Of course.
I have it now.
Everyone, with the exception of Kay and me,
is from Jersey.

That's funny! Actually, when I was in college (URI) everyone I met who wasn't from RI was from Jersey. So, yeah. Everyone is from Jersey. Proof.

5. Nope. It rains. It really rains.
6. Nope again.

I'm just making stuff up.

Hey folks! Just lettin' ya know I'm not ignoring you.
Shout outs take time, which I don't have right now.
But I'm reading and enjoying all the comments!

Just thought you'd like to know that while you've been sleeping (or whatever it is you do at night in Winnipeg) I've been here...

GAH! Oh my word! I missed an updated! That certainly won't help with my points score.

For the record, I knew the Nebo reference!:)

I am starting to get very jealous of your VIP Bus Package! I never have that kind of luck.

Looks like a good start to the last day! Excellent Epcot quality time there!

My guesses for Round 10:
1. Magic Kingdom
2. I think it's your last park.
3. Dole Whip Float
4. You'll stay as long as you can. So at MK closing is my vote.
5. I think you will miss the rain. You've been so lucky so far!
6. Yes I think you do have an ADR!
