Canadian Buffoon's Back to Front Vacation - Update! 05/18 - Falling Down

How did your finals go?

They went well. I didn't bring my overall grade up to an A like I wanted. But Clinical Microbiology is HARD. Also, doesn't help that it is the one part of my soon to be job that I do not intend on pursing. I dislike it A TON!

 Oh, no!
Are you okay????

I am ok, but VERY bruised! I had to have X-rays and ultra sounds done from the knees down.

When does it end?
How much longer do you have?

I have orientation for clinicals on Thursday of this coming week. I start actual clinicals next Monday. They last for 12 weeks and then I have to return to the school for a seminar and I am done. My graduation is May 12th, the weekend after I get back from the Ladies EPIC DIS meet!

You take your time
and please take care of you.
Okay?

I'm trying... Gravity sometimes has a way of inter-fearing!

Holy crap, Jenn! That looks terrible and SO painful. :(

Do you know yet what day your clinicals end? And what kind of placement did you get? Do all of you have the same facility or...?

Just remember... you need to pass...
you don't need straight A's.
No one has ever asked me
"So... in high school... what did
you get in math?" (or whatever)
They just ask if I have my
high school diploma and that's it.

You poor thing!
Are you feeling better now????

It was definitely miserable. I did it right before I had to go into work. I didn't think I was going to make it back up when I fell. It took several minutes for me to get back on my feet. I then had to work a 6 hour shift on my feet. I was ever so happy when I got home that evening! That night It was only about the size of my fist on my left leg and about half that size on the right knee. I came home and iced it and took some meds and went to bed. When I got up in the morning, the bruise had spread like it is in the picture and a lump developed on the left leg about 3 inches across and sticks out about an inch. The right leg had a spot just slightly above the center of the bruise that I couldn't even stand pressure from clothes on it. I started having pain up and down my legs, and decided I had best have it looked at. The big lump on the left leg is not going away or getting any smaller. I am a bit worried that I may have to go back to the doctor and have it drained. I still can't stand anything tight against my right knee in that one tender spot. I am wondering if maybe there was a tiny sliver that came off my knee cap and is stuck in there. You know how when you break glass and you get a tiny sliver in your foot. You can't see of feel anything when your looking at it, but the moment you touch it or put pressure on it, it sends you through the roof? Yeah, that's what I feel, but worse. I am feeling better over all. I kinda had "whip lash" through my whole body because I hit so hard. Every part of me hurt for a couple of days from being jarred so hard.

Do you know yet what day your clinicals end? And what kind of placement did you get? Do all of you have the same facility or...?

April 5th is my last day of clinicals. I don't know my schedule yet. I will find out during orientation this coming Thursday. I then have to return to the school for a seminar May 2nd (the day before I fly for the Epic trip). After that, I am done and graduation is May 12th. I am going to be at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, OH. It is one of the largest hospitals in the area. None of my class is going to the same facility. They had trouble getting places to take everyone. Seems that labs are short handed and think that they can't take people for clinicals because they don't have enough staff. How do they expect to remedy the short handedness if they don't want to train new people? It doesn't make sense. There are some people (not me) in my class who will have to do part of their clinicals at one facility and do part at another because the smaller facility they are going to does not have all 5 departments for the lab.

Just remember... you need to pass...
you don't need straight A's.
No one has ever asked me
"So... in high school... what did
you get in math?" (or whatever)
They just ask if I have my
high school diploma and that's it.

I know. It is a competition with myself, my sister-in-law (who went back to the same school as I did at the exact same time), my brother, and my sister (both of which are RN's and graduated 6 years ago). We are trying to see who has the highest GPA and who ever does, the rest have to pay for a meal for the winner. LOL it's silly, but it's fun!

Coming up soon! :)
And maybe I'll see
you there. :)

I hope so. I have it on my spread sheet. Was going to wait until it was a bit closer and message you about it. =)

And... don't let it get you down!

I won't. Well, unless gravity intervenes again. What comes up, must come down!

And... I'll keep that in mind!
I've no plans to get back
there anytime soon, but...
Ya never know! :)

Sounds good! :rockband:

14 months???
That's... ridiculous.
Glad you got it solved.

Yea, I was very stressed.

How's camp life treating ya?

I am done now. Got home December 17th for good. It was a good experience this time around, I had been doubting my leadership abilities and just myself in general and the feedback and offers of promotions really gave me a confidence boost.

Yeah! That's it!
So they do blow glass.
I'm going to have to go
back and take another looksie.

Maybe you have to stay in there for an hour or more like we did. She was making the prettiest pumpkin and I still kind of regret not getting one :sad1: Mike has a short list of things he loves about WDW, and this is one of them so we really carve out time for it :-)

I had visions of
countless displays similar to... this:

corning1_zpszcz9yrqt.jpg
Did anyone's grandmother not have a set of these?
Come to think of it, I believe I inherited a small one from her.

I wasn't too worried about the
chocolates, but...
He specifically asked about alcohol
and I'd said "No."
Oops...but totally something I would do too.
Good he didn't make an issue of it.

Does that remind you of anything?
Tracy's convinced that they used
that as the basis of the
Crystal Foxes in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
Judge for yourselves...
So I was scrolling down and got to the glass sculpture and before I even read your comment, I thought "oh cool, a Star wars crystal fox".
I think someone from the movie definitely visited this museum!

She even pointed out
the bowl she uses to soak
her feet in after a long
day of walking around Disney.
(She brings it with her.)
Well, that's a bit fancier then the ziploc bag of ice my wife used

I saw a bottle of
root beer that I didn't recognize.
That's an automatic "Yup!"
I like to try exotic root beers too. Mind you some have been a 'meh' for me.

It was soooo cool!
I wasn't even sure what was
being made until closer to the end.
I've always had a fascination with glass blowers. It's just amazing what they can create.

I'd met Mark ( @Captain_Oblivious )
and one of his sons last year,
but now I was meeting (most)
of the rest today.
Yay!

Unfortunately, Sarah was working
and couldn't attend.
That's what they said, anyways.
I suspect she's possibly just a little bit
wiser than the rest of them.
She always did seem very bright.

I told everyone to smile
(again) and made sure Drew
was ready.
(He assured me he was) and...
Haha! Awesome!
Everybody does look great in the 2nd picture. Maybe Mark can use that one for his next Christmas card...

Did you see it in this chapter?
Did you see them both?
Oh man. I saw one. You definitely found your calling. But two? Nope.

Shout outs coming soon,
but first, a tiny real life update.

So Elle (DD21) decided to
learn how to knit.

She made a few...
Well, we call them toques
or tuques, but you
might call them beanies.

Whatever.

She asked if I wanted one.
I told her "Yes, but!
I don't want any ol' hat.
I want it this long and
stripes and a big pom pom
on the end!"

Seven hours of work later,
she delivered.

tuque.jpg

I'm kinda really in love with it. :goodvibes

It was definitely miserable. I did it right before I had to go into work. I didn't think I was going to make it back up when I fell.

Oh, man.
But...
Where did you fall?
And how?
Did you trip over something?

It took several minutes for me to get back on my feet. I then had to work a 6 hour shift on my feet.

I was ever so happy when I got home that evening!

I bet!

That night It was only about the size of my fist on my left leg and about half that size on the right knee. I came home and iced it and took some meds and went to bed. I am feeling better over all. I kinda had "whip lash" through my whole body because I hit so hard. Every part of me hurt for a couple of days from being jarred so hard.

This really doesn't sound good. :(
And... yes... I am familiar
with the "jarring" part.
Did that myself a few days ago.
(Stupid icy driveway...)

I am going to be at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, OH. It is one of the largest hospitals in the area.

And... is that a good thing?
Are you pleased to be placed there?

How do they expect to remedy the short handedness if they don't want to train new people?

:sad2:

Unfortunately, I am all too familiar
with this concept.
Well... except from a slightly
different perspective I suppose.

I know. It is a competition with myself, my sister-in-law (who went back to the same school as I did at the exact same time), my brother, and my sister (both of which are RN's and graduated 6 years ago).
Okay! I like that!

Go Jenn!

I hope so. I have it on my spread sheet. Was going to wait until it was a bit closer and message you about it. =)

I should probably post something.
I know now which parks I'll be when.
Stay tuned... :)

I won't. Well, unless gravity intervenes again. What comes up, must come down!

Helium?
What about helium?

Yea, I was very stressed.

I can understand that!

I am done now. Got home December 17th for good. It was a good experience this time around, I had been doubting my leadership abilities and just myself in general and the feedback and offers of promotions really gave me a confidence boost.

On the one hand,
I'm sorry to hear you
were having self-doubts...
But on the other hand,
I'm glad you got such
positive feedback. :)

Maybe you have to stay in there for an hour or more like we did. She was making the prettiest pumpkin and I still kind of regret not getting one :sad1: Mike has a short list of things he loves about WDW, and this is one of them so we really carve out time for it :-)
That could very well be.
Maybe... I can ask when
they'll be doing blowing
rather than... bending.

Did anyone's grandmother not have a set of these?
Come to think of it, I believe I inherited a small one from her.

I have them too!

Oops...but totally something I would do too.
Good he didn't make an issue of it.

The term "cold sweat"
is really a thing.

So I was scrolling down and got to the glass sculpture and before I even read your comment, I thought "oh cool, a Star wars crystal fox".
I think someone from the movie definitely visited this museum!

The similarity is just
way to close for it
to be a coincidence,
I think.

Well, that's a bit fancier then the ziploc bag of ice my wife used

She needs to go work
at a glass museum. ;)

I like to try exotic root beers too. Mind you some have been a 'meh' for me.

Me too.
Some great, some not
so great, some "meh".

I've always had a fascination with glass blowers. It's just amazing what they can create.

::yes::

She always did seem very bright.

Obviously!

Haha! Awesome!
Everybody does look great in the 2nd picture. Maybe Mark can use that one for his next Christmas card...

 He just has to
photoshop out my
big head!

Oh man. I saw one. You definitely found your calling. But two? Nope.

Not too hidden. ;)

It's AMAZING! My DD knits, but she has never made anything like that before. Hmmm.... maybe I should ask.

I love my new tuque. :)

How is she 21 already?

Well...
The Earth rotates around
the Sun at about 67,000MPH,
which takes about 365 days.
She's been around for
21 of those, so...

:rolleyes1

impressive - she made quick work of that.

I know!
I think she's having fun
with it so she just keeps
plugging away.
Don't know how long
she'll keep it up.
Glad I got mine!

:rotfl2:I like this kid. Takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin'.

You never know when you'll have
that meet that just doesn't work.
I'm always at least a little worried
that the other side of the equation
just won't show up.

I've never had that particular fear. It's more...

On the other side...
I'm worried that people
meeting me won't be overly
thrilled with the result.

"Huh. I knew pkondz was dull...
But I didn't know he was that dull!"

There you go. Or, "Wow, that guy was a jerk."

I've been extraordinarily fortunate
with my DISmeets.
I've met some wonderful people
in some wonderful places.

And you've also met me. In Delaware.

I must admit...
When Tracy mentioned that,
and told me to come for a visit
sometime... I had visions of
countless displays similar to... this:

corning1_zpszcz9yrqt.jpg

:rotfl::rotfl2: I have to admit...yes, that's what I pictured.

I wasn't too worried about the
chocolates, but...
He specifically asked about alcohol
and I'd said "No."

All of a sudden, my pants spontaneously combusted!

The border guard closed the trunk
and re-approached my door.
"Have a nice day." Is all he said.
I held my breath until I pulled away
and then let it out in a whoosh
of relief. <PHEW!>

How much did that cost you? :rolleyes1

I now consider myself
an international crime lord.

Aw, man. I should have had you sign a napkin or something.

I had entered the
Corning Glass Center
instead of the
Corning Museum of Glass.
Whoops!

I get the feeling you're not the first person to have made this mistake.

Tracy was waiting for me
and...
From the moment we met,
we became best friends.

Well, that escalated quickly.

Wow, that is just stunning work!

Does that remind you of anything?
Tracy's convinced that they used
that as the basis of the
Crystal Foxes in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
Judge for yourselves...

I can certainly see the resemblance.

Just an incredible piece there! I bet he must have had hundreds of pages of plans to work all the details out. :rolleyes1

She even pointed out
the bowl she uses to soak
her feet in after a long
day of walking around Disney.

I would not want to pay the over-weight airline fees for that one.

This window caught my eye
as well.
Not sure why, it just called to me.

Space modulators have been around a long time, I guess.

I found it fascinating.
There was a collection
of about 2,000 rare books.
All about glass or glass making.

My favorite is, "How Glass Turned Die Hard From a Decent To An All-Time Great Action Movie".

Wow. Hard to fathom the chandelier we saw coming from that. As an engineer, I'm about as far removed from the mind of an artist as you can get. So this just blows me away!

While we were eating and
chatting up a storm
(I love when that happens)
it started to rain outside.
(see what I did there?)

Clearly, your powers are being wasted in your current job.

We returned to the museum
and watched a glass blowing
demonstration.

Those are never NOT fascinating.

But I very much appreciated
the thoughtfulness.
Tracy had gotten me some
Chihuly sketch books and
note cards as well as a
museum magnet
with (what else?)
a Dale Chihuly masterpiece
on it.

Sounds like someone knew what you liked!

But traffic and time
conspired against me
and I had to chose between
the last two Harley shops
or my scheduled DISmeet.

Harley shops. Every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

I'd met Mark ( @Captain_Oblivious )
and one of his sons last year,
but now I was meeting (most)
of the rest today.

Honestly, I can't believe you came back!

I suspect she's possibly just a little bit
wiser than the rest of them.

"Hey! I'm meeting pkondz! Who's in??"
Julie: "Me!"
David: "Me!"
Scotty: "Me!"
Drew: "Me!"
Sarah: "Meh"

Mark figured if I was coming
to the area, I had to have
a famous Philly cheesesteak.

A real one! Not the Steak-umm crap the rest of the continent settles for.

They must have been running low. I've seen a literal wall of meat on the oven before.

Oh. My. Word.
The thing was huge!

::yes:: As it should be.

As I turned back to my meal,
Drew hopped off his chair
and ran over to me.
"I wasn't ready!" He cried out.
"Oh." I said. "Then we better
take another one."

This kid. I am told this is a sign of "leadership skills". And here I thought it was just being bossy. :sad2:

Much better.
Thanks Drew.
I owe you one, buddy.

I gotta say, it is a better photo.

Mark's family is easily
one of the nicest
I've ever had the pleasure
of meeting.

Awww...thank you for saying that. They've been making me look good for years.

I thoroughly enjoyed both of my evenings with with you. Thank you for being willing to go so far out of your way to meet up with me! Too bad we couldn't make the timing work so we could get to the UD Creamery.

I enjoyed chatting with
all of them,
including Drew.
We had a few very serious
conversations, he and I.

Mostly involving Paw Patrol and whether or not you had any cookies with you.

Too soon, it was time
for us to part.
Time always flies at
these DISmeets.
I'm always shocked
when I look at the time and...
"Where did the time go????"

Stupid bedtime.

Mark (or Julie... or both)
provided me with a little taste
of Delaware for the road.

You should credit Julie. I wanted to keep those all for myself.

Did you see it in this chapter?
Did you see them both?

::yes:: Little fella really likes his glass, I guess.

:rotfl2:I like this kid. Takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin'.

Bets on whether he
did that twice???

I've never had that particular fear. It's more...

There you go. Or, "Wow, that guy was a jerk."

:rolleyes1

And you've also met me. In Delaware.

:lmao:

And it was my pleasure.

:rotfl::rotfl2: I have to admit...yes, that's what I pictured.

::yes:: Hard not to!

All of a sudden, my pants spontaneously combusted!

That's okay.
I would've put them out
quite handily.

How much did that cost you? :rolleyes1

Nothing.
I told you.
I'm an international
crime lord.

Aw, man. I should have had you sign a napkin or something.

Opportunity lost.

I get the feeling you're not the first person to have made this mistake.

Probably not.
They should put that in there.
"Not the glass museum."

Well, that escalated quickly.

:lmao:
that's almost exactly
what @Steppesister said!

Well, that certainly escalated quickly.

Wow, that is just stunning work!

There were many pieces
that were just as stunning.

I can certainly see the resemblance.

Right????

Just an incredible piece there! I bet he must have had hundreds of pages of plans to work all the details out. :rolleyes1

:rolleyes1

I would not want to pay the over-weight airline fees for that one.

Nah. The museum pays.
One of the perks.

Space modulators have been around a long time, I guess.

Yes... but the Illudium Q-36
is always missing!!!

My favorite is, "How Glass Turned Die Hard From a Decent To An All-Time Great Action Movie".

Oooh...
that's good.

bravo.

Wow. Hard to fathom the chandelier we saw coming from that. As an engineer, I'm about as far removed from the mind of an artist as you can get. So this just blows me away!

It really took me by surprise.
Was very pleased Tracy
took the time to show me that.

Clearly, your powers are being wasted in your current job.

Well... duh!

Those are never NOT fascinating.

::yes::

Sounds like someone knew what you liked!

::yes::
She's really wonderful! :goodvibes

Harley shops. Every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

Nah.
Higher priorities.

Honestly, I can't believe you came back!

You said the food was good. So...

:lmao: :rotfl:

A real one! Not the Steak-umm crap the rest of the continent settles for.

And now I know the difference. :)

They must have been running low. I've seen a literal wall of meat on the oven before.

If you recall,
there were two other
people in there.
And they left after
I arrived.
(Obviously smart folks.)

::yes:: As it should be.

::yes::

:faint:

This kid. I am told this is a sign of "leadership skills". And here I thought it was just being bossy. :sad2:

Well, he led me to a
better photograph, so...

I gotta say, it is a better photo.

See?
Leadership.

Awww...thank you for saying that. They've been making me look good for years.

This I have no doubt.

I thoroughly enjoyed both of my evenings with with you. Thank you for being willing to go so far out of your way to meet up with me! Too bad we couldn't make the timing work so we could get to the UD Creamery.

I guess I'll just have to
make another trip! :)

Mostly involving Paw Patrol and whether or not you had any cookies with you.

And I failed on all counts.

Stupid bedtime.

You should credit Julie. I wanted to keep those all for myself.

 I don't blame you!
They were good!

::yes:: Little fella really likes his glass, I guess.

::yes::

Hit and a Miss

I haven't posted
an update since last year.
Figured it was time.

Okay... it's an old gag.
But I'm a Dad.
So I'm exempt from
saying lame jokes.
Actually... it's a requirement
of the office.

I left off last year
with two successful
(well... for me)
DISmeets in my pocket.

No... wait... that's just lint.

I mentioned that as Mark's
family and I parted ways,
the rain had eased...
But it hadn't stopped.

I sprinted over to the car.
Well... "sprinted" isn't
quite right.
I'd say waddled,
but that seems a little pedestrian.

Sorry. Running gag.

I got in the car and headed
for the hotel.

And the rain that had eased,
returned with a vengeance

Rain always seeks vengeance
with me, because once,
his relative entered my house
and I mopped the floor with him.
It wasn't easy. I was soaked
(with sweat, of course) when
I was done.
He really put me through the ringer.
He tried to sue me. He's such
a wet blanket; but I have an
umbrella corporation that
takes care of that.
I left him high and dry.

Please refer to previous
disclaimer re: Dad jokes.

The rain started to come down
harder and it made driving
a little more challenging.
It wasn't too bad,
but when you aren't quite
sure where you're going
or what your exit looks like...

My exit came up much more
quickly than I thought and I
had to slam on the brakes
pretty hard.
I started to hydroplane
(which sounds pretty cool...
"Wow! A hydroplane! That's awesome!"
until you're doing it.)
and almost ran up on the curb.
I managed to negotiate
the turn successfully.

"Listen. Tell you what.
You let me make this turn
and I won't use my car
to scrape up your pretty
little cement, okay?"

The curb and I agreed.

I arrived at my hotel,
and as quickly as I could,
I retrieved my bags
(Yes, plural. Carion and
suitcase)
and hustled into the hotel,
managing to stay semi-dry.

I seem like a semi-dry kinda guy.
Some are semi-wet.
I like to stay positively arid.

I semi-sloshed up to the
front desk and announced my arrival.

"I'm sorry, sir." The young lady
behind the desk said.
"But I can't find your reservation."

Wow. Perfect.

This really ticks me off.
Either hotels overbook and when
you show up, send you
somewhere else;
or they lose your reservation
and if you don't have it,
then too bad, it's not their problem.

I've encountered this sort of
thing before and always travel
with all my hotel reservations
printed off.
Don't tell me that I don't
have a reservation!
:snooty:

Maybe it had been a long day,
but I was less than amused.
I just wanted to get my key-card,
find my room, and collapse
for a few hours.
Is that too much to ask?
But no. Because of their
stupid reservation system,
they couldn't find my booking
and so I had to go digging
around until I found the
right sheet of paper.
I eventually found it,
and triumphantly handed
it to the inept clerk.

"Sir? This is the Hampton Inn.
Your reservation is for the
Country Inn."

oh

With head held high
(hanging in shame)
I boldly marched
(slinked off)
back out the door
and to my car.

I re-loaded my bags
into the car,
and drove across
the parking lot
to the Country Inn & Suites
which, oddly enough,
had a reservation for me.

Oh well...
The donuts were good.
Thanks Julie (and Mark.)

The alarm brayed at five am.
Groan. Second day in a row
of getting up far too early
on a vacation.

And yet... I hopped out of bed
because I had more DISmeets
planned for the day!
And like the previous day,
I was meeting one for the first time
and re-meeting one
for the second time.

The rain had stopped sometime
during the night and the roads
were dry and perfect for driving.

At one point, I was doing about
65 in a 55 zone.
I try to match the traffic flow.
If there isn't any, then I'll
typically go about 5mph
over the limit.
(Conditions allowing, of course.)
An SUV sped past me
doing about 70 to 75.
Not a big deal.
If you get caught speeding,
you get caught.
Live and let live.
But what caught my eye
was the pick-up truck
that was tailgating him.
And when the SUV moved
back into the right lane
after passing me,
the truck took off like a shot.
I remember thinking
"What an idiot."

And it turns out I was correct,
as I passed him a little later,
pulled over by a State trouper.

I myself made four quick stops.
(At least.)
Three Harley stores and for gas.
I picked this up at the latter stop:

IMG_1097_zpszxu4uctd.jpg

Not bad!
Almost the same as Canadian.
(Get the same brand too.)
Except here it's about the same
sweetness and we just call it ice tea,
not "Extra Sweet Tea".

I arrived at my first
destination at 2pm.
Bad Daddy's Burger Bar
in Raleigh, NC.

Annie (@SoccerDogWithEars )
wasn't expected until 2:30pm.
Every time I've seen her,
she's been late,
so I figured I'd settle in
with a drink while I waited.

IMG_1100_zps4nlkcfkp.jpg

A Moonshine Blackberry Limeade
(Midnight Moon Blackberry moonshine,
Lime sour, fizz.)
Not bad!

Almost right on the dot
of 2:30, I saw Annie pull
up in her car.

When I had told Annie
that I was coming back
through NC again,
she insisted that I bring
her several pounds of
Coffee Crisp chocolate bars.

Since I didn't want to dine
alone, and didn't know anyone
else in NC, off the top of my head,
I agreed to her extortion...
uh...demands... uh... insistence...
um... request.

She gracefully accepted her tribute.
She seems moderately pleased.

IMG_1104b_zpsm4kja6su.jpg

I love that photo.

All kidding aside,
Annie (and her husband, Joe,
who I met the previous year)
is an absolute delight.
She's my kind of people.
I don't know how she feels
about me, but I get along
with her (and Joe) really well.
They're both really nice to
humour an old coot like me.
People like that keep me young.
And smiling.

We ordered lunch and started yapping.
I love it when conversation flows
back and forth without those
awkward silences.
You're just... comfortable.
And happy.

And then it happened...

Annie handed me a small
cooler bag:

IMG_1102_zpsz7szzsxu.jpg

Um... okay?
I lifted the bottle, confused.
It was a bottle of Gatorade,
but looked a bit different
from what I'm used to.
I didn't understand.
Was it her favourite college
football team's logo?

I looked up at her.

"You can keep that if you want,
it's just to keep it cold."

It was then I noticed that the
contents (water) were frozen.
(So... ice, actually.)
Under the bottle was some
more ice and below that...

IMG_1103_zps9coovhxo.jpg

... were two pints of ice cream!
And not just any ice cream,
but ice cream from Sunny Sky's!
Last time, Annie and Joe had taken
me there and I loved it.
They have amazing ice cream.
And she knew I didn't have time
to go, this trip.
Not only did she go out of her way
to get me this,
but she even remembered that
last time I ordered Apple Pie
and Peach Cobbler.

I was very touched by her
thoughtful (and very much
appreciated!) gift.

I was wondering how I'd
keep it cold.
(I didn't think I'd be
able to eat it right away.)
Annie informed me that
the little cooler was mine
as well. :goodvibes
See? Thoughtful!

At some point, our food
arrived and we dug in.

IMG_1105_zpskjbgsl2i.jpg

Bad Daddy's has some of the best
burgers I've ever had.
And... if you're looking at that
photo quizzically, that's an egg
on top of my burger.
And if you've never had a fried
egg on a burger...
you haven't lived.

I can say that with authority.
Roald Amundsen, the first
person to travel to both
the North and South pole
even said so.
"Adventure is cool, but you
haven't lived until you've
had an egg on a burger."

See?
Facts.
(Adventure is "cool"...
North Pole... South pole...
get it?)

After an hour or so of
wonderful company
(from my point of view...
she probably had second
thoughts about sticking
around after she got her
Coffee Crisps.)
We parted ways.
Me, reluctantly;
her, like an inmate
just released from prison.

I wasn't quick enough to
get a photo of her leap
of joy and fist pump.

I'll skip forward a bit
and show you my prize(s)
that I enjoyed later that
night after I checked in:

IMG_1108_zps1hnauj0z.jpg

The top melted a bit,
but it was still delicious!

Thanks again, Annie.
It was wonderful seeing
you again.

I headed west.
I had a couple of stops
planned between then
and my next DISmeet.
But traffic was heavier
(and slower) than expected
and I kept losing time.
First, I skipped a Harley store
(saving 10 minutes)
and then I had to skip
seeing my first covered bridge
(saving another 5 minutes,
plus photo time.)

Just gives me a reason
to return.
That and...
Two other reasons...
(coming up)

I was on my way to
see Rob (@GoofyIsAsGoofyDoes )
He's a fellow DISdad and
I was greatly looking
forward to meeting him.
We had made plans to meet
at a place called BBQ King
at 7:00pm.

I arrived a little late,
about a quarter after
the hour.
I pulled into the parking lot
and looked around to see
if I could spot him.
I didn't see him outside,
so I headed inside.

I figured I'd send him a text
to see where he was at
and hoped that he hadn't
come and gone already.

I figured the odds were slight,
but you never know.
Then I remembered my error.
I had told Rob that I'd
text him when I got close.
He had said he lived 10-15
minutes away...
And in my haste, I'd forgotten.

I figured I should text him and...
I'd also forgotten to put his contact
info into my phone. :sad2:
(I'm batting a thousand here...)
I had the info on a PM
on the DIS... but I needed
WIFI to access that.

I popped back in the car
and asked Betty where
the nearest McDonalds was.
(There's either one of those
or a Starbucks nearby.
Both have free WIFI.)
It turns out there was a
McDonalds on the next block.
I could see it from where
I was parked.
I walked over and got
Rob's number and texted.
(I kept the texts, so this
is verbatim.)

Me: "Where you at? :)"
Rob: "On the way. 10 or 15 min"
Me: "Sounds good!"

I ambled back over to BBQ King,
headed inside and waited.

After... well, 10-15 minutes,
I received another text (verbatim):

Rob: "I'm here... How about you"
Me: "Inside"

I waited a bit, then decided
to go outside to meet him.
I looked around and didn't
see a likely suspect.
What???

Me: "You sure you're here?
Or am I where you ain't?"

Almost simultaneously
I received this text:

Rob: "I'm confused...
bar b q king doesn't have
an inside"

Me: "Uh oh..."

I won't bore you (more)
with the rest of the
conversation, but...
It turns out that somewhere
along the way, I got my
wires crossed.
I had plugged in BBQ King
into the GPS (and Google maps)
and navigated to that restaurant
located just a little outside
of Charlotte, NC.
Rob was in Charlotte...
at Bar-B-Q King.
(Not BBQ King.)

By now it was almost
eight o'clock.
It would take Rob an
hour to get where I was
(or me to him.)
I still had about two hours
of driving ahead of me...
Four if I drove the hour there
and back.

This just wasn't going to work.

I felt... terrible.
I'd really been looking forward
to meeting him.
And... well, I was also looking
forward to trying the food
that he'd spoken so highly of.
Now, neither was going to happen.

I sent one final text:

Me: "Sometimes the TRs just write
themselves. Kind of wish it didn't
in this case. Well, hopefully we'll
meet up another time. Take care."

I still feel badly about that.
I completely wasted his time.
I'm really sorry about that Rob.
Hope some time I can
make it up to you.

:guilty:

With great sadness,
I got back in my car
and drove off to the hotel.
Rob had told me to enjoy
my meal, but...
I'd lost my appetite.

I really was upset
with myself for having
made such a stupid error.

As I drove on,
I recalled the last time
I drove through here.
I'd had hours of white
knuckle driving
through rain and
zero visibility.

But not this time!
At least... not until
it started to rain
and the visibility
dropped down to
about zero.

:sad2:

Luckily, it only lasted about
half an hour.

I arrived at my hotel
about ten pm,
totally exhausted
and not particularly
happy with myself.

I consoled myself
with an ice cream pity party.

Today's map:

In case you didn't see them:

Did you see it in this chapter?

Coming up... A scenic drive.
