I always thought what Americans call "Canadian Bacon" is what Canadians call "back bacon"...and 'regular' bacon is, well, bacon.

It's a different cut of meat... not sure if it's considered 'cheaper'.

I'm not sure what they call it in Canada, but it wouldn't seem that weird to me if they used "Canadian Bacon" too. We say "American cheese"...

I used to hear Canadian bacon referred to as peameal bacon, because of the cornmeal type stuff on the outside.

canadian bacon and pemeal bacon are two differnt things. We call canadian bacon canadian bacon. A lot of people cofuse pemeal bacon and canadian bacon. Canadian bacon is a much leaner healthier version than pemeal bacon.

I've always known it as back bacon. It is similar to ham in that it is cured or smoked but is cut from the pork loin. Ham is made from the rump or haunch.

My Grandfather called "Canadian bacon," pease ham. No cornmeal involved.

It's far less fat laden then regular strip bacon.

The Irish have something similar but it is much more salty than the pease ham version.

Funny I am Canadian and here, to my knowledge we just have bacon and pemeal bacon (and then of course the turkey bacon and all of those healthy alternatives - YUCK - ). I have no idea what "Canadian Bacon" is, if I have seen it in the grocery store I never noticed. Strange.

Peameal bacon is what Amerians call Canadian bacon. My friends in the States always thought that is what Canadian's call bacon. Umm, no, we eat actual bacon.
