Can you upgrade at your resort for the price if you decide?

Have you ever decided to pay for preferred at checkin? Or ask for a bigger room or suite? Is this possible to do a checkin? Does it cost more if you wait? Like if I was on the Spring offer will I getthat discount or will cost regular? Just curious. Do they ever give you a better deal at the counteR?

Remember that there may not be any preferred rooms available when you check in. If you really want it, you need to reserve it. I would think that the upgrade cost would be the same as if you upgraded at reservation time. We have gotten upgraded for free a few times at WDW, but we have never asked and never expected it. You can ask for the closest room to the lobby that they can get you and see what happens. We routinely ask for free upgrades at chain hotels when we travel and get them about 1/2 the time. Seems like less lately.

I haven't tried so I don't know from personal experience. I do know they only allocate so many rooms to each discount so you may end up paying MORE if you wait (not less).

Also I read here on the DISboards (over on the resort board) that the front desk folks can't give discounted rates they just do rack rates. You get the discount via the folks on the phone. I seem to recall several people mentioned that as fact but again I've never asked for an upgrade (we were given a freebie at check in 3 times from standard room to preferred once each at AS Movies, AS Sports and AS Music - however I think that was more for their convenience than ours)

If you have a paid for a regular room, non-pool view and want at preferred room with a pool view, just ask when you check-in, 'what is the price difference?'. The person at the desk will tell you and you can decide if you want to pay the price or not. It can never hurt to ask. Disney already has a good chunk of your money, so maybe you'll get lucky and only charge you the $10-20 per night difference rather than reworking the price altogether.

As discussed elsewhere, the typical upgrade will be at "rack rate" rather than any discounts, even if you otherwise have a discount. However, if they are trying to free up space due to overbooking, etc, then they sometimes will make free or deeply discounted upgrades available, but this is the distinct minority of circumstances.

I travel quite a bit and worked in hotels for years. For Disney hotels I recommend booking the type of room you want before you arrive. I find the desk agents can generally only move you at rack rate, usually not available, and they have to deal with rooms management in the back office. We travel at peak times. I myself, have never been upgraded. I like TPV and book when the price is right for my budget, never the published rate. I wait for discounts and pick dates when available.

We travel at the slowest time of year and have never been offered an upgrade, even though plenty of upgraded rooms were available. We have inquired about paying for an upgrade when we checked in, but always it was for rack rate when the room I booked was at a discount, so we've never taken the upgrade.
