Can you upgrade an assigned GTY stateroom after the PIF date?

I've been going back and forth between booking an oceanview stateroom and navigator's verandah for our June Alaska cruise. I paid in full yesterday, switching to a 9B GTY in hopes of possibly getting a verandah upgrade, since this particular sailing has only a couple of oceanview cabins available, but a lot of navigator's verandahs available. Looking at the category availability spreadsheet on the GTY assignment thread, I can see that most Alaskan cruises for this summer have a lot more oceanviews available than my cruise does, so I think our chances of getting upgraded are higher than average. Perfectly aware that I could still be assigned a 9B, though.

If we do get assigned an oceanview after the PIF date & I then decide we'd like to upgrade to a verandah, will we get to do so by paying the difference in fare that it would have been when we booked the cruise? I read somewhere on these boards that you lose that chance after getting your GTY assignment after PIF, but don't know if that is correct or not- it was just one person's comment. Any experiences with this?

You cannot alter a GT booking, the ones that did have the discounts. But I would guess a GTY might be. It seems like I have read where people have gotten their room assignment on a GTY, and then called and asked for a room change, in the same category, and they were able to do that.

You certainly can. Yes you will have to pay the difference in price. It should be from the time you booked. If you booked a 9b gty and get upgraded to a 9a. I believe you will still have to pay the difference between a 9b and a verandah, but I could be wrong on that. It could be the difference between a 9a and a verandah. The later would be nice. It's rare to get upgraded from oceanview to verandah, but it could happen. I usually get upraded, but to the same type of room. 11b to 10b or 9c to 9a or 7a to 5c along those lines. I've never been upgraded to a different type of room.
