I thought you could only tranfer points that were current? And, then....they had to be used or banked. But, I saw where someone was wanting to transfer 2010 points and they could be borrowed for 2009? Whick is correct?

According to the planner:

"Current policies limit ... transfer transactions to one transfer per Member or Membership . . during a given Use Year.

Transferred Vacation Points can be banked.

Banked or borrowed Vacation Points may not be transferred."

So as I read it you could transfer your 2010 points to someone. There is no specific instructions on borrowing, but I would assume they could borrow from them and all the regular borrowing rules apply and they would expire in the 2009 UY of the transferring member.. . at least they are suppose to. I have heard of transferred points morphing into the receiving members UY.

Now I think I have confused myself!!:upsidedow

Transferred points do not morph into the receiving member's Use Year; that was the case some time ago but no longer - - transferred points retain the status of the Home Resort they are tied to and also their original Use Year (meaning month) so if I have June UY & transfer points to you but your UY is December those transferred points still remain June UY points; these transferred points may be banked by you but the UY will still remain as June.

If I have borrowed my 2010 UY allotment of points into my 2009 UY then I cannot transfer those points to another member because they are borrowed points ( & the only way these points would have become borrowed would have been if MS had to access them for a reservation I booked).

But yes 2010 UY points may be transferred - - it's kind of a grey area where transfers are concerned but allowed primarily to allow the member who is receiving the points to utilize transferred point's Home Resort 11 month priority booking window; ie I get a transfer in of a member's AKV points with Feb 2010 UY so I may make a ressie on Sept 15 2009 at AKV for Aug 15 2010 even though it's still 2009 UY.

:goodvibes

What you saw was someone wanting to transfer 2010 points that had not been borrowed, current year points and the following years points may be transferred as long as they have not been borrowed or banked.

I have read on this board many, many times that you cannot borrow transferred points, i.e. I have already had a 2009 transfer, thus I can only accept a 2010 UY transfer, but would like to borrow those transferred points for a December trip. BUT, I just spent about 30 minutes researching the DVC website and could never find that actual statement. I'm just curious if anyone could show me the exact language that this is prohibited.

Relying on that statement caused me much stress last year.

I beleive it is in the Home Resort Rules and Regulations printed as part of the small POS book given to you when you purchased your interest. I beleive it is under the subparagraph on Transfers (which seems obvious except that the rule about which use years can be transferred is only under the subparagraph on Use Years). I don't have it with me, so I can't be more specific. Best of luck -- Suzanne

Thanks, Suzanne. I'll look tonight. It's not even that I am necessarily wanting to do that right now . . . I just want to see it in writing. :goodvibes

It really won't help much to find any written rules associated with transferring points. DVC can (and has) changed them at their discretion.

At the present time:

  • MS will not allow you to borrow transferred points.
  • You may bank transferred points.
  • Only current use year points may be transferred.

Last year, 2008, they allowed a 2009 UY transfer into my account, [which I used in 2009 because I didn't think they could be borrowed], since I had already done a 2008 UY transfer. Possibly, the rules are not consistently applied.

Hm, maybe I should just consider another :cutie:add-on.

This is what I believe to be true. I was confused when I saw the transfer offered for 2010 points. Just thought I'd ask......

Looks like my use of current was confusing. Sorry.

2009 use year points that have not been banked or transferred are current use year points for use year 2009.

You are allowed one transfer in or out of your account per use year. So even if you were still within your 2008 use year, you could still get transfers into your 2009 use year. You cannot borrow transferred points, but you can bank them.

Again, sorry for the confus9ing use of current.

2010 use year points that have not been banked or transferred are current use year points for use year 2010. So it's entirely possible that someone is offering to transfer them. It is within the rules "currently" ;) used by MS for transfers.

According to the Home Resort Rules, you can transfer points in your 2 "active" use years. Your active Use Years are the existing use year (2009, unless you have an Oct or Dec UY, then 2008) and your next use year (2010, again except for Oct and Dec, then 2009). Points that have not been banked or borrowed (and, thus, are "current") may be transferred. Clear as mud? -- Suzanne

Okay. I guess, that answers that question. Thank you!!

Yep, Suzanne, that's exactly where I found it last night. Thanks for the help. :flower3: I just needed to see it for myself.
