Can you trade your ownership?

Just curious if a DVC owner can trade his DVC property to a nonowner for let's say a car? Just curious.

DVC is a real estate ownership. Just as in owning a home, it is deeded, etc. and there are legalities involved in any change in ownership. At the very least there would be closing fees, lawyer cost, etc. Not to mention Right of First Refusal which gives Disney the first crack at any sale of the timeshare. So, no I don't believe it is possible to just "trade" ownership.

It's an interesting thought though. I wonder if you could sell the interest but price it as "one 2004 Chrysler 300M" instead of $ per point?

Sure, you could barter it if you wish. You would still need to submit the accepted offer to DVC for ROFR and they would likely ask for an appraised value of the item being used to "pay" for the sale of ownership. They would then have the right to offer the same cash value via ROFR.

As noted by CarolAnnC, there would still be closing and transfer fees to complete the transaction if DVC passes on ROFR.

Your sig says you're an AKL founding member....does that mean your family name is on the tapestry's in the library?

Actually it can be done but it is essentially selling one and buying the other. I have done this by trading timeshares. I traded a fixed week in Aruba for a 50 point OKW contract even. DVC did come back and ask we redo the contract with a dollar amount for each item. My first inclination was to say know and see what they said but I wanted the DVC contract more than I wanted to push the principle at the time. Fortunately it the values were essentially the same and it was reasonable to price them both near the DVC retail sale price and do so honestly. Had DVC taken it under ROFR, I would have gotten a good but fair price on the Aruba unit.

Yes, it should be there. Haven't been there to search for our names yet though, won't be able to do that until October.

FYI... DVC rep that I spoke with this AM, said that they did not see any problem with the trade. She said, basically it the same thing as an exchange (sale and purchase). We would just need to have a liscened rep do the paper work. Not for sure if we are going to do it or not, but I will keep you posted.

You don't actually need to have a closing company do it but you may want one. It is not a requirement.
