Can you tell me about Teppan Edo?

I'd like to learn more about Teppan Edo in Japan. I wasn't really planning on eating there but I've seen several comments recently how good it is, and how the filet was much better there than Le cellier, etc. So, now I'm thinking of trying this restaurant, but unsure of how this place works. I do know you sit with maybe up to 6 others at one table and have a cook making your stuff for you in front of you. Is that right? I didn't realize you order you own filet or shrimp or whatever. So, could someone please tell me how this restaurant works? How is the seating? I like to know what to expect when things are different than in a typical restaurant. How is the steak? What about the shrimp, is it breaded or not breaded? And, how long does it take generally to have lunch or dinner? Thanks guys! :goodvibes

Hi Minnie!!

Teppan Edo is a Japanese Steak House. If you have never been to one, this is a must do. To answer your specific questions, the shrimp is not breaded, you can count on at least 1.5 hours for a meal, and I didn't think the filet was anything special. The cooks are entertaining and the service was attentive.

Having said all of that, if you have ever eaten at a Japanese Steak House you would be better served experiencing something else. Or, for that matter, if you can visit one before you leave for Disney, save your money and go closer to home.

There will be lots of people who disagree with me on this, as this restaurant seems to be fave on the boards. But there are lots of Japanese Steak Houses in my town and 80% of them are better than Teppan Edo. Also cheaper and bigger portions. AND include soup and salad. AND do the same cooking tricks. I will not go back there, not because it wasn't good, just because I can have that experience at home with bigger portions and a smaller price. I like to try places on vacation that I cannot get at home. For instance, there are no French restaurants in my town, so Chefs de France is one of our favorites.

But as I said at first, if you have never experienced this kind of meal, it is a must do.

Either way you decide, I'm sure you will have a fantastic time!!!

We ate at Teppan Edo on Monday. It was a great meal. The filet was excellent. I had the chicken. It was very good.

We loved the restaurant. It is beautiful. The bathrooms are among the best at Disney! The wait staff is exceptional. We spent a nice 1 1/2 hr. there on a very hot day.

Our experience was positive. We will definitely go there again. It was an expensive meal. Be prepared to spend alot!:thumbsup2

We love Teppan Edo. We always go there for our last Disney meal before leaving for the airport. The tables are for 8 people and they will sit you with other people. There are two seats on each end and four along the long side. The cooks are great and the food is delicious. You can pick whatever you want - shrimp, sirloin, chicken, etc. or even combos. We have never had a bad meal here and will return on our next trip.

Teppan Edo is a must do for us on each trip. We enjoy it very much. We do not have Japanese Steak Houses near us, so it is unique to us.
You sit at tables for 8 which surround a long Teppan grill in the center of the table. The chef comes and he chops and dices and prepares your order on the grill in front of you. He entertains with tricks etc, as he cooks.
The meal is a stir fry like dish. If you order steak, it will be cut in cubes and cooked on the grill. The shrimp is not breaded, it too is stir fried. It is all served with stir fried veggies and noodles and you are served a bowl of white rice. You are also given 3 different dipping sauces with your meal.
We love it and will be there again in a little over a week.
Enjoy

We ate at Teppan Edo about a month ago - it was our 1st time eating there & we really enjoyed it. The food was very good & our chef was very fun & entertaining. We got the chocolate ginger cake for dessert & it was fabulous! We will definitely return to Teppan Edo on future trips.

1) You will get widely different opinions about Edo.
2) The reason is that they are so dependent upon the individual chef(s).
3) In most eateries, you see the waiter.
4) Here, the Chef is the link.
5) The food quality is well above average.
6) But, the skill and entertainment of the chef is what makes the meal.
7) You will have to judge for yourself, but it is worth the effort.
8) So, yes, by all means, go.

We have reservations here in early December. They don't serve soup and salad before the meal? Bummer!

If you have a hibachi place local I would go there because the portions are bigger, the prices are cheaper, you get fried rice, soup, salad and shrimp appie included in your meal...we love hibachi restaurants and go frequently...

In August DH really wanted to eat at Teppan Edo...I will say the food was good (except for my way overcooked filet) but the portions were very small (we went for lunch), no soup, no salad, no fried rice, no shrimp appie...

We left hungry :rotfl:

We love Teppan Edo! On our last trip in March, we loved it so much we canceled another reservation later in the week and came back for another meal.

We have several Hibachi restaurants in my area, however, the ambiance, waitstaff, and chefs make the difference. Everyone is so kind and attentive, the service was really super both times.

Everything is cooked right there in front of you, except the rice. You are given white rice along with your entree - you chose between steak, chicken, shrimp, combinations, ect. And - if you're on the dining plan, you can order the combinations as your meal!

You are seated at a table for 8 - two on each end and four across from where the chef is doing the cooking. The shrimp are not breaded, but cooked on the grill, as well.

While I did miss having soup there like I do at home - it was one of the best meals I've ever had at Disney. I'll be going there again in December and I can't wait!

We eat here every time we go to Disney. We are going twice though this trip, in two weeks. An earlier post said they don't serve a salad before hand. Every time we've went they do serve a salad with ginger dressing on it. It's fun watching the chefs cook the meal and crack their jokes. The food is always awesome.

We went for the first time on our last trip because I love this kind of food. DH told the kids they needed to go for their mother. DS (12) and DS (14) - ages at that time - loved it! They had already planned on "trying it" and eating elsewhere when we left since we were on the meal plan. HOWEVER, they loved it and we've already made reservations to go on our next visit! DS (13) is a picky eater, too!

There is nothing around us unless you drive all the way to Toronto so Teppan Edo is definately unique to us. Also, since we always use the dining plan I have to say it is a very good value for your dollars. I got the shrimp and steak (the most expensive item on the menu haha) and is was over thirty dollars.

We are eating here on our arrival night next summer because we loved it so much, and hopefully this time the value will be even better

Oh and we were served salad to start with a ginger dressing I think.

My husband and I ate here for the first time in May, and he still drools at the memory. Where we are from in England there is nothing like Teppan Edo and I was a little apprehensive to say the least.
However, apart from the slightly odd family sat with us, it was a wonderful experience and it is top of our list when we go back. The food, although not the hugest portions, was fantastic and good quality, the atmosphere was great, the restaurant was beautiful and the chef (a young woman) and our waitress were absolutely lovely.
I'd definitely recommend it-give it a go!!

We love Teppan Edo!!! We did this resturant for the first time in January...it is a must do for our family. My 3 year old loved it. I think it was about the only time we got him to not move for the whole dinner. ;) Can't wait to eat there again in Dec!!

We ate there last week and for us it was ok. But we have been to many of these type of places and they all must be trained to do the same "act". We always see the onion volcano, the shrimp caught in the hat, etc. Our chef was nice but not outgoing. It was so hot in there as you are sitting at the grill. We were there almost 2 hours. We sat with two other families. One family talked to us, the other basically ignored us and seemed mad that we were sitting with them. It was kind of uncomfortable. The food was good but portions were small (and I ended up sharing mine with dd because they kept forgetting to bring her meal (which was a joke when they finally brought it). The ginger chocolate cake was really good.

We love Teppan Edo. It's usually just DD14 and me, but sometimes DH comes with us and we've also taken my mom and dad with us. Everyone has been very pleased with the meal and entertainment.

You do need to be prepared for sitting with "strangers." Some are more strange than others. :rotfl: When we were there in August, DD and I were really worried because there were a couple of loud and obnoxious families in the lobby and we were sure we'd get stuck with one of them. As it turned out, we were seated with a delightful family from Vermont. My DD and two of their DD's were the same age and had lots in common. The older daughter was a sweetheart and the parents were great fun. We had to rush out to meet up with my sister and her family, but we really wish we had gotten their e-mail addresses.

Anyway, I'd give the restaurant a try and form your opinion based on your experience.

They do serve soup and salad, but it is a separate price. DH loves the salad with ginger dressing. He gets it every time. You can get soup, salad, sushi, its just a separate cost. I find that there is plenty of food served with the base meal and it is served in sections by the chef.

ITA that if you have a habachi place at home then Tepan Edo is nothing special.

10 years ago we had no such place in my town so Tepanyaki now Tepan Edo was a real treat and something we looked forward to. Now we have 5 japanese steakhouses in our area, so Tepan Edo has lost it's appeal.

If you have never dined at a Japanese steakhouse, then by all means go to Tepan Edo, it is a great experience! The food is good, the atmosphere is great!
