Can you tell me about Netflix?

What does "throttle" mean?

It means they think your are renting too many DVDs in a month and they delay sending DVDs to you by a extra day or so even if your distribution center is close by.

I'm not going into details but I've gotten DVDs in the morning mail, um "watched" them and returned them to the post office before the last pickup. I'm considered a "power user". They lose money on me because their pricing model doesn't fit my renting habits.

Really...now that is interesting. You certainly would be getting more bang for your bucks, huh?
So where is that 4 week free code?

Friends is the four week code.

I'm a power user too and even with NF throttling me, BB is still slower. I belong to both and they both have distribution centers in Philly (one day mailing to me).

Odd. I wonder which Philly post office BB works with, because they are way faster than the Valley Forge one that Netflix uses.

I'm on the other side of the river in NJ, and BB is so much better for me.

I'm not a huge power user, we watch maybe 3 DVD a week. I mail them from my house not the PO because my pickup is earlier in the day, and the drop box in the PO isn't sorted until later.

Netflix member since March '03 here and no real complaints. Only once did they send me a wrong movie, but it sounded interesting so we watched and enjoyed it anyway so really can't complain about that. A couple times I thought a movie I had returned was "lost" because they didn't receive it for more than a week, but they eventually did turn up. And a couple times the movies were not playable and that is a bit frustrating, but overall they are a really good service and I'm sticking with them. I'm getting "Phantom of the Opera" today. I usually have 20-25 movies in my queue so it doesn't bother me if I don't get the new releases right away. I had never heard of "throttling" before...ya learn somethin' new every day!! :)

I am a power user with Netflix and have never been throttled. Only time one was shipped a little later was when it was a new release and when they got my return (actually I checked before they got my return), the queue said "short wait" so i figured they were out of them. But they may have actually gotten more in stock because they ended up shipping it out the next day. I usually watch on the weekends anyway, so the extra day was no big deal. The turn-around is still fast. If I mail back Monday morning, I have the new movies on Weds or Thursday depending on the USPS.

There is no Blockbuster around here (with a parking lot), so I am sticking to Netflix.

Plus I love the Friends feature on Netflix. :)

That looks interesting but I haven't tried it yet. Wanna be my "friend"? :teeth:

They also have a formula they use which helps determine whether or not a movie will show up as Very Long Wait, Short Wait, or Available in your queue that is based on how many movies you are renting in a time period.

I don't have the site, but if you do a google search you can find it. I think it is called Hacking Netflix or something like that. It discusses many of these issues. There was a post on there from one guy that said all the movies at the top of his queue were showing "very long wait." His girlfriend signed up for a trial period account, using the same address. When she put the same movies into her queue, they were immediately available.

Mystery Machine - my experience in the DFW area was far different. Blockbuster took at least a day to check in DVD's and sometimes it took 5 days to get a movie they sent, rarely did we have one day mail service. I don't know where there distribution center is. The queue was also hard to keep up because almost everything was unavailable.

Netflix has a distribution center in Coppell and the mail time is rarely more than a day both ways.

Thanks for the info. I got my first shipment since moving yesterday. I am not a "power watcher" so I don't think I should worry about "throttling".

CindyB thanks for the code. I am going to think about it. It would be nice to get those coupons for games. I don't know.

if anyone wants to be my "friend" they can PM me their email. lol. :flower:

In our "real BB store" the games cost $6.99 for one week rental.

So in our house, the kids get one coupon, and the adults get a second coupon.

I figure for $6.99 we get a lot of "worth" from the plan.

if you join?
Is there a spot on the page to enter the code?
Do they charge sales tax on top of the monthly fee? Can you sign up month to month, or do you have to join for a year? If you join for more than a year, do you get a prepayment discount?
Thanks~!
