We are leaving to check into OKW later today . Right now (MS isn't open yet), there is availability at AKV in a room that is less points (exactly the number I need for an October stay that I planned on buying points or) for tomorrow night. I know its a huge long shot but if tonight is also available ( someone must have cancelled as I have been checking several times a day) can I switch resorts and use the few points to book my Oct stay at my home resort??? :scared:

My understanding is that if you switched at this time and freed up points, those points would go into holding. This means that those points can only be used for reservations made dates 2 months or less in the future. So, you would have to wait August to see if there is still availability for your October reservation.

I think if you cancel "day of" you lose those points.

It's very clear on the member website; any extra points would be forfeited.

As of today, your date of arrival, all points for the trip are deemed used. Nothing can be saved by switching. Also, do not attempt any switch online which requires cancelling one and booking the other. If you do so and cancel OKW, your contracts will not replensih with those points to allow booking the other resort. I am not even sure you will be allowed to do the change via phone but don't even make the attempt online.

You would actually be cancelling and rebooking.
The rules are you cannot cancel today and retain your points under normal circumstances. As someone previously mentioned as of today your points have been used for the vacation that starts today.

If I were in your situation, I would always call MS and ask the question and tell them what you want. The worst that can happen is they give you the same answer we've given you.

The website is clear that if you cancel, all points are lost. If you "modify" the reservation, any extra points are lost.

Op here. I ended up keeping my reservation as is. I never would have attempted to change on my own. I have a few times switched resorts after checking in (but that is a different situation).

Hey Supersnoop! You are correct! The website is absolutely clear about what is supposed to happen!

But, after 15 years as a Member, I've found that you rarely get the same answer or result twice in a row from DVC/MS.

FYI - it definitely is possible to change day of if there is availability, I've done it as I was driving to the resort. But also the extra points would have been forfeited. If it's an even exchange or "costs" more points then you would have been fine.
