Can you pack wine in your baggage on airlines?

I am going to Vegas in a few weeks and just wondered....are you allowed to pack a bottle of wine in your suitcase? We are arriving at 10:30 and by the time we check in I think it will be too late to buy wine at the hotel in the gift shop right?

You know--I'm not sure.

I know a lot of DCL cruisers by their alcohol once in town--and I know lots of people buy their duty free stuff in the islands and some have to fly home with it.

I would be concerned though with keeping it safe and in one piece for the flight as it will have to be stowed in your checked baggage.

It's not going to be pretty if the bottle breaks and goes all over your luggage and anyone else's in the cargo hold.

I'm sure Las Vegas has places to buy wine late at night, it's a 24 hour city. Or go to a bar.

Yes you can. Just use lots of bubble-wrap and stick it in the middle of the suitcase.

We've been able to get a bottle of wine from room service at every hotel we have stayed at in Las Vegas. I would not risk it breaking inside the luggage.

Thank you all. I know you can order from room service, but it's so expensive. I think the bubble wrap is a good idea too.....just didn't know if the airlines would ok it.

The last time my sister was visiting we went to BevMo and she picked up a kind of Vodka that she had been looking for. She packed it well with bubble wrap and then inside a big ziplock bag. They never had any trouble with the airline and the bottle arrived intact.

I brought some fantastic wine back with me from California in something called a wine mummy. It's like a wine bottle sized envelope made of big bubble wrap, not the teeniny little bubbles. Didn't have any problems. Maybe see if you can find a mummy for yours...

i collect boutique red wines-and i travel a good bit for work-fly around with wine in my checked luggage on what can safely be described as a regular basis. here are some suggestions-for one bottle-wrap in bubble wrap, put the wrapped bottle in a two gallon ziploc bag and seal it-ive never had one get broken but theres no harm in being safe. Pack it in the middle of your suitcase well cushioned. if you are traveling with more than one bottle you can sometimes get a 3 bottle box-if you wrap the bottles in bubble wrap and put the in the box they will fit snuggly and not shift-pack in the middle and you are good. the third option is to get a three bottle wine shipper-its a liner that wineries use in boxes when they ship wine-and use that to pack them in-all of the above work great-i have flown with as many as 5 bottles in one suitcase.

I am so happy with the replies. I am going to the u-pack-it store and get some bubble wrap or something similar and pack it right in my bag. Thanks again all........

Use lots of bubble wrap and you can even use double zip loc bags. Make sure your package is well padded with nothing solid packed around it. In other words pack lots of clothes around it.

And just to be clear: yes, you can pack wine in your checked luggage. The airlines only place restrictions on alcohol (and other liquids) that you transport in your hand luggage.

I've packed wine in my checked luggage several times. JSmith and Dare2Dream beat me to the punch in suggesting a combination of bubble wrap, zip lock bags (I prefer to use two, one inside the other) and lots of padding.

One thing you have to be careful of, is the type of suitcase you use. Hardshell luggage is best; if your luggage is made out of canvas or other soft material, there is the risk that it will be placed under something fairly heavy and sharp, which might (when moved) break the bottle.

And don't forget the corkscrew!

Pogo is right. My mom brought some on a recent trip to WDW (don't ask-difficult "travel mates"!) and was fine with it in her checked stuff. She even had a "tarvel safe" corkscrew (actually given to her last trip at CSR) that you didn't need to check. So keep that in mind, too, to check the corkscrew. GL and cheers!

That bottle of wine might cost you more than you think if it causes you to incur an overweight baggage fee.

If you were bringing home wine from a vineyard or from a special place that you visted, that would be one thing. But to bring wine to a place to drink, where it is sooooo easily purchases is just plain silly!. As others mentioned, the breakage issue is always a problem, not to mention the weight issue. That one or two bottles will become mighty expensive when you have to pay for the overweight baggage fee's, which can be upwards of $25 to $50!!!
I would say, buy the wine in Vegas!!
