Can you help me figure out another book title?

I read a book in junior high for history class and I'd like to find it again. I do not remember the title or author. It was set in America during the depression and the father of the family lost his job. Since he couldn't support his family, the decision was made to cast out the oldest son to fend for himself. A younger brother decided to go with him. The story is then about their struggles to survive on their own, scavenging and begging for food.

I know this is not much to go on, but does anyone recognize this book?

I did a search on Google for a junior high reading list and found the book listed!

It is "No Promises in the Wind" by Irene Hunt. It looks like I may have a few of the details wrong, reviews state that the 2 brothers run away, not that they were cast out of the home. I remember enjoying the book so I guess I need to re-read it.
