Can you hear the stabilizers?

We have been on 2 Disney cruises, once on the Magic and once on the Wonder. We were in a cat 6 both times and never had a problem with noise. However, DH and I just got back from a Carnival cruise (Fascination) and were on a lower deck with just a porthole. The water was pretty rough one night and we had a horrible time with noise. It sounded kind of like a bullhorn and was loud and constant. We called about the noise and were told it was the stabilizers. We are planning on going on a 7 day Disney cruise next fall but will have just a porthole on one of the lower decks. Has anyone had a problem with this type of noise on the Disney ships? Having this problem on Carnival is making me hesitant to book a porthole cabin but we don't have the extra cash for the balcony. Advice, anyone?

Most of Carnivals ships use Azipods to propel the ship thru the water vs shafts and propellers as the Magic/ Wonder. I wonder when the seas were rough if the azipods were varying in speed more than normal and that is what you were hearing.

Where were you located forward, mid or aft? Seems like most of the stabilizers I have seen are located pretty close to mid-ship.

I don't think the Azipod system has anything to do with it. We cruised on the Amsterdam, which uses Azipod propulsion, and were on deck one, the lowest deck, and never heard a thing. We were on deck 7 aft on the Magic, and never heard a thing.
Only mechanical noise we have ever heard on 7 cruises on 6 different ships was on the SS Norway, it had been retrofitted with side thrusters that made a lot of noise and vibration when docking.

We stayed on Deck 1 on the Wonder recently. We did occasionally hear noises that we believe were the stabilizers. However, it wasn't bad at all, and I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again.

We were mid-ship, and the noise was so loud that I could hear it through my ear plugs, a pillow over my head and the tv on. Although everything else on the Carnival cruise, was nice (it had just gotten out of dry dock), I would never sail it again because the noise put a damper on the entire experience.

I am glad no one else has had this type of problem on the Disney ships. Thanks for that link. I will definitely look at that when selecting a cabin when we cruise again.

DW and I stayed in 2098 on an 11/04 Wonder cruise. Captain used the stabilizers both directions through the Gulf Stream, and at high speed. We never hear a sound. :thumbsup2
