Can you have more than one home resort?

We became DVC members this year and SSR is our home resort. We love SSR but would like to try other resorts eventually as well. However, when we tried to book Grand Californian this year it was unavailable and today we tried for BC or BW 7 months from today and they are unavailable.

So my questions is if we purchase another contract for BW, for example, would we have two resorts that would be home resorts then? Is it worth having more than one home resort?

Thanks just trying to figure out the best way to get the most of our DVC membership.

Sure, there's no problem with owning more than one contract as long as you are still within the golden rule, nobody can own more than Mickey! :)

In fact there are several people here that have ownerships at more than one resort and so have multiple home resorts.

As to whether it's worth it. If you want to go to a specific resort, and can never get in at the 7 month window, and you can afford it of course then I'd say yes.

But as always YMMV and do your homework first. :)

Looks like you are learning about availability the hard way. :sad1:

We own at 5 resorts because we want to stay where we want, when we want.

If you are looking at December, 7 mo out, that is among the most difficult of times to get a DVC resort. Wait list may work. We own at 3 resorts so we can book at the 11 month window. WL for December and BC for F&G and F&W festivals.

Sorry to add to the questions and hijack the thread but this is a question I was considering.

Say i was to purchase 100 points at AKV and 100 points at say BLV and wanted to stay at BLV for 2 weeks, would I only be able to use the 100 BLV points to reserve a room at the 11 month point or would I be able to spend all 200?

Hope that makes sense!

You would only be able to use the 100 points at the 11 month mark. The two contracts are looked at as completely separate. What you can do is find someone that has DVC points for the resort that you are looking for and buy points from them. In other words, buy points and have them transferred to you and then you will have enough points. We have sold points and transferred them for people that needed additional points.

Great question. Hadn't even considered that. Looks like Thumpersworld gave us the answer. I imagine they have that policy so that people don't purchase small point totals for numerous resorts.

We own at 2 resorts and like the PP said, at the 11 month window, you can only use points for the particular resort where you are reserving at. This means that you may end up borrowing points from the following use year to get your reservation. We found this to be a problem as it meant that we ended up with unused points for our other home resort for that use year which we then had to either use (and we didn't want to do another DVC trip that year) or had to bank. If you plan on doing regular trips then that may not be an issue for you, but as we like to doing other vacations that are outside of DVC, it proved a headache for us as we felt obliged to do another DVC trip. When you are booking at the 7 month window you can use points from any contract, and they will ask you which contract you wish to use. Hope this helps.

Disney will happily sell you small add-ons at every resort if you want to purchase them. Many people buy enough points at a second resort to stay there every other year (using banking) or every third year using banking and borrowing.

The reason for the restriction (only home resort points are valid for reservations made in the home resort booking window) is that the total number of points that Disney sells at each resort equates to the cost of booking about 98% of the rooms 365 days a year. If they allowed you to use non-BCV points at BCV in the 11-month window just because you owned at more than one resort, that would amount to overselling BCV. There would be more points available to be used in the home resort booking window than there are rooms. Taken to the extreme, we could all purchase hundreds of points at SSR (to save on the purchase price and dues) and 25 points at BCV, resulting in tens of thousands of excess/"morphed BCV" points contending for rooms 11 months out.

As mentioned, you would only be able to use the points for that specific resort at the 11 month window, but you could bank and borrow to use up to 300 points at one time. That is what most people who own multiple resorts do. We have a smallish AKV contract that allows us to bank and borrow to use 3 years of points at one time for an 11 month booking window there. Fortunately, we have also had success using our OKW points there at the 7 month booking window.

Both GCV and BCV are small resorts that are popular year round. BWV you might possibly be able to get the wait list but you have picked a very popular time between Christmas and New Year.

Also if you check ebay and other forums, you will find members who have booked these busy weeks at 11 months and are renting them. It is called Speculative rental.

Thankfully the DIS does not allow this type of rental. :thumbsup2

;) You could also do a split stay, booking AKV for a few days then move over to the other resort at 11 months. Continue to read on the boards here and you will learn how to get more out of your membership. I have learned that busy times for DVC are not necessarily busy for WDW. You will see alot of rooms go in Oct-Dec becasue the points to stay are cheaper and there is so much going on around the World.

DVC works the best when you plan ahead 11 months...book your room at your home resort...then try to switch at 7 months...at least you will have a room somewhere if you cant change at 7 months.
