Can you exceed bed space?

Are you allowed to exceed the number of occupants in a room at Disney? Like if we were in a standard "four person" room and my parents want to join us for a few days, do we have to book another room or can they stay with us? Our kids (young) always end up in our bed anyway!

The easiest answer is no. Depending upon the ages of your children, the room type, the resort, these are all variables. Then if you are wanting the extra guests to participate in EMHs, they wouldn't have resort ids that allow them entry to EMHs. Probable best option: 2 rooms.

Nope, not allowed and might even be illegal to exceed maximum occupancy rates (it's a fire hazard). Your parents will have to book their own room.

ETA: Unless your kids are both under the age of 3.

If the resort is for 4 people that is all you can fit into the room. Fire concern & Disney's rules. You would have to get another room. You can always do a deluxe room at the BWI but it is club level or maybe a suite at one of the values etc.. I do know Disney enforce the fire rules to a T but then again some break them & I am not in favor of that so no flames please. I just saying some people would do it.

Even with that, if you have more than one child under 3, only ONE counts as the infant. The other one(s) are counted as additional occupants of the room. So it's (in most value & mod rooms and some deluxes as well), only 4 + a maximum of one child under 3.

We have 3 adults and 2 children. However, one is using the pack N play to sleep. When we booked, the rep didnt say a word about occupancy limits. Perhaps it is the amount of people that will be using a bed that they go with?

Where are you staying? Room occupancy limits vary depending on hotel. Some rooms at Poly and BC for instance will hold up to six, some rooms at POR will hold up to five, etc. And if one of the kids is under 2 or 3 I think it is, I don't think they are counted in the occupancy. Occupancy limits are based on fire codes. For the babies or toddlers that will likely be carried in the event of evacuation, they are not counted.

Also OP - with two extra adults in the room, the rules say you have to pay an extra adult fee per extra adult per night. Not sure what it is, $25 per extra adult per night maybe? Either way, in order to follow the rules, you'd have to pay that and they wouldn't allow you to have them in there anyway with the kids.

Okay, thanks! They'll either have to book their own room or we'll do a suite. We'd like to stay at POFQ again, but maybe we'll have to try the Art of Animation suites depending on how long my parents will be with us.

besides all the legalities.....4 adults and 2 kids in a room barely big enough for 4???? not me. id do 2 rooms or a suite OR a Fort Wilderness cabin. What if they change their minds and want to stay longer at the last minute???

This is why I'm asking. I've stayed in standard non-Disney hotel rooms with more than four people, paid the "extra person" fee and it was no problem. My family doesn't really care about squeezing in with each other- seven of us spent Thanksgiving in a tiny NY studio apartment one time! We don't/won't spend a lot of time in the room. However, it would also be a plus for us to have microwave access in a suite because my parents have dietary issues as well. I just wish we could stay with a moderate, but it may be cost prohibitive for my parents.

Well, it's actually both due to the size of the buildings, number of stairways, etc. AND...it really shouldn't matter. By renting the room, you are in contract with Disney and these are their rules, if you don't want to abide by them then don't stay there. If you are caught they are totally within their rights to kick you out.

not without incurring the additional per person charge( up to $25 per person depending on resort level) .. if you are allowed to do it at all. WDW is far more strict about this than every other hotel in the industry.

It's not really an additional person fee. It's an additional adult fee for more than two adults in the room, not to exceed occupancy.

So normal occupancy is two adults, plus as many children as meets occupancy. So if you have three adults and one child in a room that sleeps four, you pay for one extra adult. If you have four adults and no children in a room that sleeps four, you pay for two extra adults. But you can't have four adults and two children in a room that sleeps four.

Have you considered renting points from a DVC owner and get a two bedroom villa. You would have plenty of room and there is no additional charge for the extra adults - cost of room is for the villa and any occupants upto the room limit (2 bedroom allows 8 plus one under 3).

Yes, I think if we do go with an onsite suite, that's probably what we'll do.
