Can you drive a stick shift vehicle?

In the US, it doesn't seem to be law that you have to have a number plate on the front of your car, only on the back. Here, we have them on the front and back.

That's a state-by-state law. Here in Tennessee, only rear plates are required. Other states, like California, require front & rear plates.

...and never ever drive convertibles around top-down with the windows up, either. Blab all ya want about 'it helps windflow to not mess up my hair'. whenever I see a convertible with windows-up I point and say "Look, dork!"

Actually I've done that a few times, but not for the reason of not messing my hair--which is so short that's a moot point LOL!

If I'm driving and need to talk on my (hands free Blue Tooth enabled) cell phone, the wind is just too much to hear or be heard. I don't do it often, but every now and then I need to make/take a call.

The other time was driving home from Hard Rock Live late one night on the Turnpike, even in the warmer months it can get chilly at night when you've moving along at 75, and given the choice of raising the roof or the windows, the windows go up.

I'd say that of the 1000 miles I've put on the car, 970 were with the top and windows down. :car:

ETA--the windscreen between the headrests really does more for wind deflection than windows up does. We were shocked at the cost (almost $800!!! :worried: ) but it's so worth it in the long run!

Stick! My wife can't drive them though, which sucks on long trips when I have to do all the driving :/ Here is a "family" shot, left to right:

It depends on the state. I know here in WI, if you are issued a front plate (I have never seen them not issue one) you have to have it on the front of your car. i do think some states don't require them though.

Count me among those who can drive stick.

At one time, we had a 4 speed, two 5 speeds and a 6 speed. Now we only have the 5 and 6 speed.

DD is getting her permit next month. I already told her she is learning on DH's truck which is a 5 speed. I learned how to drive on manual transmission cars - that way you can drive anything.

I don't think there are as many vehicle models available with manual transmission anymore. Too bad, because those are still my favorite to drive. :sad1: I'm sure I'd feel differently if I had to deal with city driving.

So who pumps your gas for you? The one full-service station in our area is around the corner from my house. DH has a hissy fit when I go there in the wintertime. I'm sorry, but if it's 5 below zero, I WILL pay more for someone to pump the gas for me. :rotfl2:

The attendant.. No self service in Jersey :thumbsup2

I can drive stick, although my car now is automatic since I was doing a 1 hr commute each way in stop and go traffic everyday - the stick was killing me! Now, I don't have that commute and I really miss the manual car I traded in. I learned on automatic when I was 16, but once spring came after I got my license in Jan. my parents taught me 5 speed since the only vehicle that was available for me to drive was a manual 1988 Ford Ranger pickup. I'm so glad to know how!

My DH and best friend will both only drive a manual car - they each had a more difficult time getting their current cars (Subaru Impeza for DH, Toyota Corolla for friend) since they wouldn't buy an automatic. I do like that I can take DH's car whenever I'm in the mood to drive standard.

Yes. I learned when I was 17. I had an 88 Mustang as my first real car. Being a mommy, now I drive a mini van, but dh has a GT Mustang now and every once in a while I love to take it out for a spin!

That's a good ratio - you're 97% cool in my book. :thumbsup2

I have T-tops in my car - about as close as you can get to a convertible and still have a hardtop.

Not really. I have done it a couple of times, but not without giving the passenger in the car with me whiplash from bucking so much. :guilty: Im sure if it was a real emergency, I could do it.

My 2nd car was a stick. I've had one off and on for years - currently have a 2002 Suzuki Vitara 5 speed. It's my new "anti-theft" device - there has been a couple of carjackings in my area where the thief had to abandon the vehicle because they were a stickshift.

I drive a stick now, and have most of my driving life. However I am thinking of going automatic my next car. It's getting harder to find a stick, and as I get older long drives in traffic with the clutch are getting less fun (not that they were ever fun).

I can but it's been awhile since i have. I got a crash course thanks to police officer and my exboyfriend. It was a case of she drives or car gets inpounded, It was 1a and I was already not a happy camper with Ex so I drove. I had shifted for my parents prior to this so I had some clue what I was doing.

I had a stick shift that my dad adopted when I got my current car.

I couldn't imagine buying an automatic for a car

If you had to drive DC area rush hour traffic 5 days per week, you would!!! :teeth:

It's a law in all 50 states and DC for a plate to be on the back. Some states (such as Maryland, where I am) require front plates as well.

You bet. I love stick!!!! Every car I've ever purchased has been a stick. In fact, if the car/SUV isn't available in stick - I won't even consider it.

If I'm going to drive - I'm going to drive. :car:

I could drive one in a pinch but I prefer not having to "work" when I drive. I know many people who love stick shifts but it's not something I'm interested in.

You bet!! Here I am on the Tail Of The Dragon (Hwy 129 out of Deal's Gap NC)
