Hi all. I'm not talking about granola bars and dried fruit- I'm wondering if you can bring a meal with you on the plane. We're leaving at 5:45pm, which means boarding at, oh, 5:30pm-ish. Can I bring my own salad from home if I put my dressing in a ziptop bag with the rest of my liquids?? Or a sandwich? Are there any restrictions about that, besides the liquid thing? I wouldn't bring soup, or oatmeal or anything like that- just solid food. Any advice would be GREAT!!!

No restrictions... BUT, think about what you are bringing on the plane. You are all in very tight confines and I have seen people who have brought on smelly sandwiches that can really bother other people.

As long as your food choices are considerate of others, I don't see any issues....

Have a great trip.

Yep, you can bring it. We usually bring some cut up veggies and a small thing of dip to hold us over. Like you said, as long as the "liquid" goes into your bag, you're fine. Or you can pick something up within the airport and bring it onto the plane as well.

The only thing I might suggest is that you keep in mind you'll be in very close quarters with people who might have sensitivities to more...well...oderous foods, so maybe leave the hard boiled eggs and tuna fish at home. :rotfl:

I've traveled with Frozen Kielbasa and Pierogis in a cooler (Got to bring home my polish food!). I often bring a sandwich with me on longer flights cause airline food sucks.

I am glad I read this post. We are goping in August and wanted to bring muffins and things like that on the plane.

Just a word of warning - if you bring potato chips, open the bag before you get on the plane (or, at least, before take off). The air pressure does...interesting things to potato chip bags.

I would not recommend bringing anything with nuts... peanut butter/ cookies w/ nuts,etc... The last few flights we've been on they've made an announcement about someone onboard with a peanut allergy so we couldn't eat our snack mix we brought...

Good to know. We won't bring chips on the plane. Besides, I think my son would like to do that experiment with the chips to see what happens....lol

We always bring meal type foods on the planes with us if they are long flights (America to Europe). The plane meals are not always appetizing. Nice to have something else to get us through the 9 hour flights. For the 2 hour flights, we are usually ok with nothing at all (don't care for junk food)

I always pack a ham & cheese sandwich from home, on my return flight. i wil try to pick up a sandwich from Earl of Sandwich or a nice turkey sandwich at the airport for the flight home!

Since you will be in tight quarters go ahead and cut it up into small peices which makes it easier to eat when you are sitting elbow to elbow and the person in front of you reclines into you. I cut sandwiches into fourths, etc.

No liquids unless it is in approved container just like hairspray, etc. No dips, cream cheese or any soft item like that. I have been made to throw out my items with cream cheese on several ocassions. Never know when someone might take over the world with cream cheese.:rotfl:

Yes, we always bring some light food to snack on.

I just have to add this PSA:

Please don't bring anything smelly. I'm a very nervous flyer and my stomach is in knots as it is. Smelly food just makes me want to puke, and I'm sure you would not want to hear/see/smell me puking into the barf bag while sitting next to you or behind you or in front of you while you eat your garlic chicken, meatball sandwich, or greasy chili cheeseburger with onions.

Thanks for your consideration. :goodvibes

I think the strangest thing I ever saw was a large styro of BBQ chicken wings.

Once we flew a connecting flight from a jet to a prop job. We had plenty of time to eat between connections so we thought. Due to delays we were running really late. Our first flight was almost three hours, and then on to the second flight. We had kids and none of us had eaten in many hours. I ran to the pizza place in Philly airport, took a whole pizza pie and ran with it to the gate. If you could of seen my DH face as I ran onto the plane with a hugh boxed pizza pie. It was so big I had to carry it above my head and the seats to get to the back. We had the last row on the prop plane that seats five. We are a family of four and ended of sharing the pizza with the 5th stranger in the row!
It was not planned, but it really took the edge off the hunger! The whole plane was talking about it, including the flight crew. We were pretty embaressed at the time, but laugh about it now.
Actually, I think everyone wished that they had one too!:lmao:

Been there, done that... got the crumbs.

Delta serves Sunchips in First Class, it's kind of an "explosion of flavor" event!;)

I generally don't do smelly food, but like an earlier poster I once wound up with a Pizza on board. We were in "podunk, USA" and there were flight delays due to weather in Dallas. AA told us we had several hours and the ONLY option to eat was a pizza place. As soon as they bring it to the table the loudspeaker starts screaming "GET ON BOARD NOW" The weather broke and we had a VERY short window to get that plane back on track. So the wait staff threw the pizza in a box and we hauled it on the plane. (There were several others doing the same LOL!)

OP- I have seen salad dressing in individual foil packets (at my supermarket)that are labeled in oz. At least you may get through the security with that in your liquids bag. It must be labeled, you cannot put it in a container to pour on. Also, beware of yogurt on planes too...Those foil tops and airplane pressure...whoa!:rotfl:

You see many, many people bring food on board. Most of what I see is sub sandwiches that have been purchased from vendors at the airport.

Never heard about problems with chips. I've had Freetos, Pringles, etc and never experienced any problems.

Agree, leave the smellies at home!

since the chips are bagged and sealed at ground level, the air pressure is sealed in them at that time. When it goes up in an aircraft the air inside the bag begins to expand and bloats the bag like a balloon. Again this is due to the pressure up high is less than what was sealed in the bag.

Many times on an aircraft I have received a small bag of chips with lunch. No exploding occurs.

If the OP wants to bring chips there is no reason not for fear of an "explosion." I don't tend to pack chips since it is difficult to keep them from being crushed. Also salty foods make you bloated and considering your hands and feet will swell on a plane I try to stay away from additional sodium intake. Cold grapes or carrots in a ziploc baggie make a great cold pack against a sandwich.

Most airports have a place you can buy a sandwich, on the airside of security. Those places, including Subway, will provide condiments in a packet so your sandwich won't be soggy. You'll pay extra but it may be easier then trying to find a place to purchase a sandwich on your return trip. Easy to make a sandwich at home for your outgoing flight.
