Can you borrow points to transfer?

We are going for a week in June with our good friends, and are going to split the points for a 2BR. I am already into borrowing points from 2006, so my question is, would I be able to borrow 75 pts. to transfer to them for our half of the reservation? I was not sure if you could transfer borrowed points or not. If anyone knows, I would appreciate their help.

Thanks!

I'm sorry but you can not transfer borrowed points. But you may be able to transfer the points in their current year to your friends and let them make the reservation with them. Call MS tomorrow and ask based on what points you have and your friends.

As HBC said, you cannot transfer borrowed points.

However you should be able to transfer some of your 2006 points to your friend's 2006 Use Year, and then your friend can borrow those points to make a 2005 Use Year reservation.

Bottom Line: Borrowed points cannot be transferred, but transferred points can be borrowed.

Thanks all! That is what I thought, but I did not know I might be able to transfer 2006 points to her 2006 points. I will call MS tomorrow.

Thanks again!

Another option is for you to make a reservation with the borrowed points for a few nights. Your friends can make the reservation for the remaining nights and then MS can link the the two reservations together.

Best wishes -

Tomorrow is going to be a zoo. With today a holiday and MS closed, everyone making their day-by-day December 13th, 14th, 15th, and 16th reservations will be calling tomorrow.

Since you're looking at June, you might want to call on another day (Wed, or Thurs).... :teeth:

Actually Bill, transferred points can be banked but not borrowed!

Dean pointed this out in post # 9 on this thread: (I don't know how to make a specific reply come out in a link, sorry)

This is one of those things that has changed back and forth over the years. Originally, Transferred points could neither be banked nor borrowed. (In my POS, pg 54, section II, item #5, subitem #4: "Transferred Home Resort Vacation Points may not be Banked, Borrowed, or returned to the Transferring Club Member."

Then sometime later they allowed both. Now some are saying you can borrow transferred points and others say not. So I guess no one knows for sure.

Even in Dean's post you reference, go down a few more posts where he says he found it in his POS, but what he quoted was for banked points, not for transferred points.

Then there are other things that are still regulations, but DVC does not enforce. Renting points for example. My POS strictly prohibits renting (leasing) points directly. It does allow a member to first make a reservation, and then lease the reservation. But leasing points directly, without a reservation is prohibited. Also from my POS, "Club Members are expressly prohibited from receiving compensation for engaging in any Transfer activity." Again, this seems to be not-enforced by DVC.

Unfortunately DVC stopped sending out the POS update sheets years ago. That stopped shortly after we purchased in '93.

Just FYI, how many knew that originally one could only borrow 50% of their next year's points? You could bank 100%, have 100% current year points, and 50% borrowed points, for a total of 250%. It was later changed to allow borrowing 100%, thus a member could have up to 300% of their allotment in any given use year.

A lot has changed over the years, and even the CM's don't know it all. One CM will say one thing, and another will say something different.

There have been reports people have borrowed transferred points. So I guess I don't know for sure if it's policy or not.

I didn't know about the 50% rule!

I called 3 seperate times trying to borrow transferred 2006 points into my 2005 UY (BTW my contract and the transferred have the same home resort!)

Twice, I got very knowledgable CMs who know what they are doing, Tiffany and Gloria, and neither was able to borrow, stating that the computer was blocking it. Both spoke with supervisors, who confirmed no borrowing of transferred point.

But I agree it may also be CM dependent. I had one CM not allow a transfer, because I had transfered out the PRIOR use year, and I was trying to transfer in the CURRENT USE YEAR.

I also sucessfully transferred in both directions (unintentionally) this UY, and this mish-mash occurred last week!

So, I also don't really know the rules, just that I can not borrow my transferred points this last week!
