People do it all the time. Instead of being put on a waitlist for a resort (which gives you an automatic switch), they make sure they have a room with their 11 month reservation and then just call back at 7 months and take their chance. If they find something available, they cancel the first ressie and make the 2nd. Points will then be adjusted accordingly.
Keep in mind, that if you are booked at a resort with a higher point level - like anything other than OKW, and then change your resort to OKW, you are going to have something akin to a "credit" of points. That means you need to be conscious of when you are making the change and what type of points you are using. If they are able to be banked or used again in the use year, then they can be returned to your balance. If the excess or leftover points are points that were already banked into the current year, borrowed into the current year (because those can't be banked), or converted points for anything other than
DVC resorts and must be used by the end of your use year, then they will go into holding and have to be used by a certain date or they will be lost.
I may not have that perfectly stated, but the point is still valid - check the regulations for point excess situations when rebooking and be aware of what is the type/status of points you are using.
Hope you get the resort you want! BCV is the only DVC villa we haven't stayed in after all these years, due to luck of the draw and availability! We love them all!
