Can you be a fan of a sports team and never/rarely watch a game?

When I ran the Ale House for the Brewery I worked at I watch a lot of sports, it kinda came with the job. Up here you have to pick Oakland (Raiders, A's) or San Francisco (49ers, Giants). So I became a 49er's & Giants "fan." I really only watched the games at the bar. But I always kept track of the scores (of both Oakland & SF) and I still check scores & standing but honestly haven't watched a game since we closed at the end of 2017.

yes, I like the Indians and I havent watched an inning all year, and the last time I watched 9 inning of any game, had to be early 90,s , your just not a super duper fan

I'll say yes because I am now one of the nation's biggest Toronto Raptors fans, and never, ever watched a single game until this spring. :cheer2:

I think so. I'm a huge Yankees and SF Giants fan (lived in both cities), and I kept tabs on them if there was a World Series chance for them, leading up to the event. But do I watch regularly? Nope. And I know both Yankees and Giants fan will come for me for that, but their opinion doesn't change my love and support for those teams. There are different kinds of fans and that's the fun about any fandom. 🙂

The Indians were my dad’s favorite followed by the Cubs so that World Series broke his heart. He watched ALL the games, every season.

I guess, kinda? I’m not a football fan but we’re a Vikings household via DH. (He was born in MN) I ask about where they are and will root for them when DH has a game on but I don’t go out of my way to watch the games. We’re getting the Raiders and I have zero interest. Who knows? Maybe I’ll get into the home team spirit but I doubt it.

Yes they can be a fan as long as they acknowledge their limitations. It drives me nuts when someone who doesn't watch any games tries to argue with me about things involving the team/players when I'm watching 80%+ of that team's games.

I don’t even know who half the players are anymore. You won’t get arguments from me. 😁

My husband does this and it drives me CRAZY. ‘Hey, did we win tonight?’ No, WE lost, and you are not a part of we. You can’t even name six players!

He is working on it though, he’s making an effort for me. Plus, I can now name 22 Star Wars people so he owes me.

Or worse, if “we” loose then they (ppl who don’t watch but call themselves fans) might start bashing the players or coaches they do know.

Well, I may have to whether I want to or not :) College wise anyway. I am in the process of moving to College Station, Tx-- Home of the Texas A&M Aggies. I will have to wear maroon, at least every once in awhile or I might me run out of town tarred and feathered :) It's been bad enough living three hours away and not being a fan of either the Aggies or the Longhorns. I remember nearly giving a young kid a heart attack when he asked me which one I rooted for and I told him neither. I told him I had to root for Clemson because my nieces went to school there. He was not happy with me :)

Stick with Clemson 😉

I cheer for the San Jose Sharks during hockey season, but I rarely catch games on TV as they're not a team in the market where I currently reside.

Likewise I cheer for my college team Washington State University during football season. I don;t catch as many games on tv, again not in this market. To me they're the only crimson team (I live in Roll Tide Alabama country, yuck).

If I was to cheer on a baseball team it woudl be the SF Giants because that's who we watched/followed in our house. They're the 'home' team.

I say I am a Phillies fan, but I don't usually watch baseball on tv. 162 games is a lot. I don't watch a lot of 76ers games on tv, either. But I've seen both of them live several times.

I watch most Eagles games.

I'm an Arkansas Razorback fan but since I live in Florida the games are rarely on. Also they're pretty sad to watch lol. We're a Boston Red Sox household but have barely watched the games this year; partly because they're not the greatest and also I hate baseball commentators. I'm fine keeping up with the scores and rankings. I only knew players and coaches for the Razorbacks was because I had to be at all the games (thanks marching band).

I am also a big fan of both of these teams! I do watch them regularly but I keep less tabs on the Yankees, even though they are the team that is local to me (born and raised a Yankee fan, adopted the Giants as an adult when I got back into baseball). I think it's fine to be a casual fan of a sports team, and sometimes it's refreshing opposite fans who know every single thing about a team and their roster and exactly how everyone is performing at any given time (me lol).

You can like a team and never watch. You can be a fan and just not have opportunities to watch. But if you have opportunities to watch and don't, you're not a fanatic. For instance, I am not a fan of an NFL team or of the NFL in general. I like my team. But that's about it. When I got married years ago, I decided I didn't want to make my wife a football widow all weekend. So, I gave up the NFL and stick to college.

I couldn't agree more. For college football, I particularly dislike the casual 'fans' that do not watch or follow a program, yet are among the loudest to call for a coaches head after a poor game or for the 2nd string quarterback to replace the starter. I find that these are usually pro football fans that have little to no understanding of the college game.
