Suppose I need 270 pts for a 1 week II trade 2 BR. Do these points need to be "virgin" or can they be collected via banking and borrowing?

They sure can. Just think of it as - you'll be using "current" points for the exchange.

You can't ever borrow points without making a reservation (and once they're borrowed they become "current" points to be used during that use year.)

Banked points also become current for the year they were banked into. Neither banked or borrowed points can be banked again so, they will always be current for the Use Year into which they were moved.

One of the nice things about using banked points is that it really extends the time period you can use those points for another two years.

If my points are going to expire and they are banked, I can deposit them with II throgh DVC and then make a reservation for up to two years in the future.

I purchased a re-sale contract that had soon to expire banked points and this worked well for me.

Thanks for the quick responses, this is uncharted territory for me.

OK, let me know if I have this right. When I have collected enough for a one week II trade at whatever room size and season I am hoping to for I call MS and they deposit these points, holding them for up to 2 years while they try and make a match for me.

Also, what would happen to the point difference if you deposited for a high season but were only able to get a low season reservation? Can you combine points from different contracts (as you can for a 7 month reservation?)

Yes, you can deposit the points and then make your reservation for up to two years later. You can either deposit your points first and look for a match or you can look for a match and not deposit the points until they find one.

When you say combine from a second contract I am assuming you mean an add on with the same use year as the original contract. I would imagine that they would allow you to use those points but I don't know the answer from first hand experience.
