Can what you say online have real world consequences?

I'm not denying that is what was said. I'm just saying they were joking about visiting resorts for sex work and so everything said in that moment was all joking and not what they actually feel. I do agree maybe the apology wasn't the best but it wasn't like they were saying value people can't afford the dessert party or values won't get access to Minnie Van because they can't afford it anyways or something like that. I think she knew the "they don't have money" part came off wrong because the statement continued to they are saving their money and other stumbling. I'm not sure how people didn't realize what Pete and Teresa were joking about.
Well to Pete and Teresa's side they do tend to have a "tell it like it is no sugar coating" flair and while that's not an issue normally there are times where it's made people not appreciate how they come across.

It was interesting the other thing that someone in the Live chat brought up asking if Pete would apologize for that and he was like "no I'm not going to apologize"...I didn't find his comment offensive or anything but his site is supposed to be family friendly and his comment was most def.not family friendly. *I did laugh at his comment because I was soo not expecting it lol)

IDK about her not having that true opinion but I don't know her personally either...if she had just apologized and said something like "we probably shouldn't have joked about that and I didn't mean it to come across that way, etc" and moved on that would have probably been the end of it. But...she didn't stop there.

I should also note that this episode we're talking about...it's not exactly the first time there have been jabs towards people who stay at the All-Stars.

There was at least enough issues with what she said that they felt the need to clarify/apologize on the next episode.

I get where you're coming from I'm just saying I'm not going to dismiss that others didn't take the comment the way she wanted it and it sorta soured the thing by how she went about addressing the issue once it was brought to her attention. And isn't that the overall them of this thread...what you say can have real world consequences?

Ok to put the whole conversation into focus Teresa and Pete were literately joking about Teresa being a woman of the night.
The context is why are people not on property this summer. Kathy mentioned construction.

T: I agree with a lot of what Kathy said. I was on property last night and the construction. It was like driving through a. you didn't know where you were.
K: It wasn't Walt Disney world
T: It wasn't Walt Disney World. There was nothing magical about it. I mean I went to three resorts last night and every one of them it was just .
P: I thought you gave that up
T: No I do still work a little *whispers* i need that extra money
P: I'm tellin' sigh
T: I'm sorry
P: I thought you stopped
T: Bay Lake really you know
P: Oh I thought you were working the All Stars
T: Oh No those people don't have money, um they're saving their money for something else, well you know never whatever. I've been thinking about this too Kathy and I think, people, a lot of my clients are just fishing and wanting information about when this new stuff is coming and they are saving their money and waiting it out.......

So as you see in context yes maybe it was not the in the best taste but it was joking about sex work at the hotels. We all know Teresa doesn't actual work as a prostitute at the Disney resorts and that when you listen to it they were joking in banter.

LOL. Thanks for the transcript. Great example of a joke that got out of hand. Even her apology makes sense now- I would have been surprised people had that takeaway. Yeah, tasteless, but definitely their style of humor.

I understand where she is coming from now but others should feel free to book where ever without judgement

While it was a dig, it wasn't a direct dig about hotel choice. She was saying that people at the values couldn't afford her services- it was a joke about prostitution. I'm surprised that people latched onto the hotel part and not the prostitution part. It's like a game of telephone lol.

But why can't the people staying at the Values afford X?

I don't even care what X you're talking about......that was the part people latched onto. The fact that she made a comment about the type of people who stay at the values is the point. That's not playing a game of telephone....that's understanding the main point of her comment.

I did the transcript because I feel like when people want to talk about what someone else said they should at least give everyone the whole story since context can be important plus a boring day at work haha.

Pete? Yeah, I read his blog when Adventures By Disney gave him a trip to Australia ages ago. That and his Gay Days rant are all I have to go on for him and it is enough to turn me off completely. Really, the blog alone was.

I've read them both as well. Both turned me off, but the Australia one ensured that I won't use his travel agency (linking back to the topic a bit). The personal views of a business owner/employee may sway me to avoid the business, but can sometimes/often (depending) be viewed separately. However, after reading the Australia post, I could see that his views of traveling and mine were totally different and I didn't trust any travel agency that he was a part of to be able to provide service for the type of traveler that I am. And, yes, I've used a TA to book a WDW trip, so it wasn't a idle "boycott" (way too strong a word, I just cannot think of a better one).

And, yes, my reaction may well be unfounded/unfair - but that's the think with what one says online, you don't know how people will react to it.

Sure. But you completely failed to provide context in your original description. The whole exchange was a joke. In poor taste, probably, but the prostitution was the punch line- the bit about the values was an aside.

I think folks are missing the forest for the trees if they get offended by the economic aspect of a prostitution joke.

Ok, now I'm seriously curious. Link to the Aussie post? Anyone? Pretty please?

It was a long time ago. Let me see if I can Google conjure it. I like it was in ABD (I read it when someone else linked to it relatively recently, so I don't quite remember how old the original is).

Found it through my own google wizardry, thanks (needed a break from the sun lol). I see what you mean about how his view of travel would stop you from booking a trip with his agency, although I honestly feel like he plays up the fat American schtick as part of his style of writing- just crass humor all the way through, which probably appeals to a large part of his audience. I didn't find it all that helpful in terms of Australia though. Just as a PSA...if you aren't a halfway decent swimmer, you shouldn't go snorkeling at all, it's got nothing to do with the difficulty rating or how "fit" you are.

Not my style at all either- if I go hunting a burger it sure would as heck would not be a Big Mac. And I could care less about hotel wifi or a window in the bathroom. But I can at least agree the beets should not be involved in any part of the burger making process. That's just so wrong:lmao:

Well apologies for not getting the entire conversation written down but this is honestly one where I don't believe what I was talking about, was taken out of context. She still did say what she said sex joke or no sex joke.

Uh no I didn't fail to provide context. If my point was to say I was turned off by the sex joke then yes I would have failed. My point was related to her comment about people staying at a certain category and their financials being linked it.

Let's take the transcript and do something with it here-Altered transcript on the left, Original transcript on the right:

Now if the conversation was strictly about a sex joke and it should just be brushed off as a sex joke then why include anything about what someone can and cannot afford-it didn't further along this joke about her being a prostitute. All I took out what the part about "those people don't have money" and a bit that followed. So can you honestly 100% say that her comment was even need IF this entire exchance was just what I guess people say should be just a "harmless sex joke"?

I just think this is one where someone's true feelings slipped out when they weren't intended to do so. And really for that matter it would have been the same if she said something like "ohh those people staying at the deluxe oh they can def. afford me".

She still has a thought about the type of people that stay at resort categories and that was what people picked up on.

Or if you stay at Bay Lake, you could turn it around and be offended by the assumption you would hire a call girl.:rotfl:

Look, I agree it was a snide remark that revealed her class bias. But the podcast crew has class bias, and in general they're not a terribly PC lot. That ain't news to me and I am definitely not a devoted podcast audience member. I read that Australian blog post mentioned elsewhere in the thread and Pete's humor is largely at the expense of several different groups, including those he considers himself part of. So I don't think it's anymore out of line than much of the stuff they say on a regular basis.

I know they have that sort of bias (some of the podcasters anyways)....that was really my entire point of bringing this to the thread. I enjoy them..but hey it doesn't mean that what they say can't end up biting them in the you know what.

And I did find it interesting in this thread to see that other people have had issues with what they have said in regards to other thngs.

The thing is now you're able to see the issue?? Before it didn't seem like you weren't able to admit that she just didn't have any reason to say what she said. You yourself seem to be brushing it off and making it more about the sex joke....when that wasn't what I was even referring to.

I don't know about you but really when you put the two transcripts together you can clearly see her comment wasn't needed...that was the whole point of what I was saying.

If I wanted to spark an outrage over her speaking about prosititution I would have instead said something to that effect. And with her comment and her apology that's really all you need to understand that people were hurt that she was making references to what sort of financials one has when staying at resort categories.

And let's be real...you really can't misunderstand and tie it up in a nice bow packaged as just a sex joke when these comments:
"Those people don't have money, um they're saving their money for something else, well you know never whatever." And "I rewatched last's week's episode and the only people who could have been offended are those who can't afford what we were talking about".

Ah. Ok! With the bolded, I finally see where you're coming from, sorry. I do agree. It's why I watch the podcasts irregularly. There's a thin line between accessible entertainment and offending your target audience, and I feel like a few of them skate far too close too often. And honestly, some stuff just just comes across as absurd to me. Like many "experts", I think they occasionally get a bit condescending, and their area of "expertise" is a theme park. I don't even like being condescended to when it comes to high culture, but I've even less tolerance over that when it comes to mass market consumerism. I appreciate the information they provide, but I tend to appreciate it more in small doses.

Okay, I'm with you on the beet :) (though I enjoy them on their own). I had actually forgotten that it was beets - I remembered that there was something weird on the burger, but thought that it was a fried egg (which I've seen before). I think that that was the first thing of his that I read, so wasn't familiar with his "schtick". And maybe some of the things that turned me off were humour, but they didn't seem that way (e.g. desiring to be surrounded by Americans when touring Australia to feel more comfortable - may be it was jokey, but didn't read that way to me).

Glad I could provide you with some break from the sun.

Yeah. I could see missing the humor if it's the first thing you've read of his. But I've seen enough of the podcast that really I think those posts were mostly deliberately crafted to be humorous in a self deprecating sort of way. He's a fairly good writer, if you appreciate his style- it's polished/edited, not off the cuff at all. I don't particularly care for his schtick but I do appreciate why he's doing it.
