Can we? Should we? A Spring 2009 PTR - New 5/6 - The TR has begun!

So today was Zachary's evaluation in Boston. Once we finally got into the neurologist's office... (she was running 45 minutes late for our 9:15 appointment). Luckily we had met her last week for Alex's 6 month follow up. The previous doctor who followed Alex left last year. We were very lucky to get in with this doctor because she is one of the director's of the clinic we go to. We were also very lucky that she agreed to see Zachary - they aren't accepting new patients.

We finally got in to see her and had a very nice visit - she took a through history, in addition to all of the paperwork I had filled out ahead of time. Of course we wanted to highlight all of our concerns and the red flags that we had seen, along with those seen by the therapists who have been working with Zach (he participates in a social group run by a speech language pathologist and sees a social worker for play therapy). The only problem with pointing out all of his "issues" is that we were afraid the doctor would jump to the quick conclusion that Zachary has autism or Asperger's syndrome. Fortunately, she was very conservative and made mention of that fact that many siblings of kids on the autism spectrum have issues themselves - some of their own issues and some learned issues - learned behaviors they have picked up from their siblings.

So what did she think... she recognized the issues that Zachary is currently dealing with, requested a few additional evaluations - occupational therapy and neuropsychological testing (to find out about how he learns and if he has any learning disabilities). She wants us to continue sending him to the social group and come back in 6 months with the results of the testing. She said he very well could be on the autism spectrum, specifically Asperger's Syndrome, or maybe he isn't. She was reluctant to give a diagnosis beyond "developmental delay" at his age without any of the other evaluations. On the paperwork she noted, "Developmental Delay - social pragmatic features of Asperger Syndrome".

I am very happy with the outcome of the visit. The doctor recognized our concerns and validated that their may be a problem (which is helpful for dealing with the schools) but wasn't quick to throw a label on him. Now I feel like if/when she does have a diagnosis for Zach, it will be an accurate diagnosis that wasn't rushed.

I think I will finally sleep well tonight!!

I'm glad the neurologist could serve you well. :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

Amy-
I'm glad you feel better after the appointment!

She sounds very prudent; I'm glad all went well and that you are feeling good about it!

That's good news Amy. I know how helpful it is in school to have that notation made so that he can receive the help he needs. But, it's also great that she's taking her time to make a full diagnosis.

That's good news about Zach. I'm glad the doctor is taking her time and not jumping to any conclusions. I hope you had a wonderful night's sleep! ;)

WOW!!!!! This jumped out at me like a fish out of water....I don't think that has been said to us or I have ever thought much about that. Certian behaviors exhibited from Margaret remind me so much of Michael at this age of 2, but this could be so true....

I would feel PLEASED w/ that outcome! I am so glad you are.:goodvibes

Continue to keep him in my thoughts

Hugs my friend!

check out my PTR siggie or PM me.

(Thanks AMY!)

Thanks Everyone for your warm wishes & happy thoughts about Zach's evaluation. :goodvibes

Today it is snowing AGAIN!! Luckily the boys had school, but morning activities are canceled. We had a super busy weekend... Alex had his first swim meet on Saturday. He came in 2nd in the 25 meter freestyle and got a participant ribbon for the 50 meter backstroke. In special olympics they give out participant ribbons instead of disqualifying someone. Alex kept turning over on his belly instead of staying on his back! Then in his last race, the 25 meter backstroke, he came in 1st!! It was a long, but very exciting day.

Sunday was just busy with swimming lessons at the YMCA and Zachary had a birthday party. Now it's back into the swing of things and time for another update!! I'm working on my DHS next.

I also have a post coming up this week about some really cool park guides I got for the boys!!

Isaiah (DS11) has been swimming competitively for about 3 1/2 years. He loves to be in the water! He doesn't really have a competitive bone in his body, but he enjoys it anyway! He hates to backstroke, though....he's always scared to hit his head. We spent all Saturday morning at a swim meet as well. Yay for swimming! :woohoo:

Alex is super competitive - after he came in 2nd in the first race, he defaced his 2nd place ribbon! :scared1: He crossed off "Second" and wanted me to write "First" on it. I finally caved in and wrote "First 8 year old" :rotfl: (he was definitely one of the few 8 year olds there - you have to be 8 to compete in Special Olympics and most of the kids were much older.)

Alex has the same issue with backstroke. He's really good at it, but he worries about hitting the wall. That's why he flipped over so much during the 2nd race. During the 3rd race (the one he won), his coach told him he would stand at the end of the pool so he would know where the wall was.

In the past we haven't spent that much time at Hollywood Studios. We love ToT - it's one of Alex's favorite rides! But other than that we haven't done much there. This year I am hoping to see some more shows and of course, there is the addition of TSM. Here is our must do list for Hollywood Studios:

• Tower of Terror
• Rockin’ Rollercoaster (Tim, Amy, Alex)
• Lights, Motors, Action Stunt Show
• Toy Story Mania
• Backlot Tour?? - refurbed??
• Playhouse Disney Live!
• Great Movie Ride??
• HISTK Playground
• Indiana Jones Stunt Spectacular?
• Find the well
• Boat to Epcot?
• Villains Gift Shop
• Fudge shop… (I read about this on someone's TR...Kathy? Tracy? - and I LOVE fundge.)
• Photopass opportunities

Fantasmic is still a question for us. We canceled our first FDP ADR for mid-week but as of now I still have the ADR for our last night - not sure if I want to spend our last night waiting for a show in a crowd of maniacs. We'll see... I have to decide 48 hours ahead though or our credit card will get hit with the $10 pp no show charge.

• Tower of Terror--LOVE THIS RIDE
• Rockin’ Rollercoaster (Tim, Amy, Alex)--DITTO!
• Lights, Motors, Action Stunt Show--my boys really enjoyed this show and can't wait to see it again!
• Toy Story Mania--Looking forward to a report on this one!
• Backlot Tour?? - refurbed??--If you've never done it the kids would enjoy the "catastrophe canyon" part....i knew it was coming and my kids didn't so it was fun to watch their reactions!
• Playhouse Disney Live!
• Great Movie Ride??--OK, but more for mom and dad than the boys...my kids didn't recognize most of the movies, but still enjoyed the ride
• HISTK Playground
• Indiana Jones Stunt Spectacular?--good show, especially if the boys have seen the movies and are familiar with the characters
• Find the well
• Boat to Epcot?
• Villains Gift Shop--haven't heard of this, but sounds interesting!
• Fudge shop… (I read about this on someone's TR...Kathy? Tracy? - and I LOVE fundge.)

(Comments on must-do list in PINK above!)

Fantasmic is our favorite night show. We didn't have any crowd issues on our last trip, but apparently that may have changed. :scared:

Hi Amy!

I'm trying to remember if we got fudge at Starring Rolls on Sunset Blvd or if there was a candy shop on Hollywood Blvd... I'm not sure!

The "dark parts" of Fantasmic (with the villians and the lake on fire) is pretty intense for the kids... If you're on the fence about it, you might just want to plan something at a park that will be less busy that evening....

I remember that Billy hated it when he was five. He did better at age nine with earplugs and sitting way up in the back, as far away from the heat and flames as possible. :thumbsup2

Definitely with you on TSM... we can't wait to try it, too!

Kathy

YAY ~ We're talking about DHS today ~ My favorite park! :lovestruc

All those things you have listed are great! :cool1: Not sure of the park hours when you are going but you might have trouble fitting it all in. We always alternate between Lights Motors Action and the Indiana Jones Stunt show every other trip because they both are fairly long. Of course if you are going on a non-Fantasmic day hopefully you will be able to get so much more done! I was bummed the Backlot Tour was closed when we were there in January. And we missed the Great Movie Ride. Oh well, more to look forward to next time! :thumbsup2

They sell fudge in the same store as the Villains shop.

Backlot tour....have you done this before? I find it to be a huge bore for me now. It's a fraction of what it was, and I think the part with them filming a movie scene to be way too long. I'll be interested to see what the refurb was all about because I'll bet they just didn't want to say that it was closed to save money.

And I kinda of agree with Kathy about F! (I love the show personally) but isn't it one of your kids that can't watch the opening part of Lion King because it's too "dark"?

• Tower of Terror one of my favorites too hoping my parents will go on with me this time!
• Rockin’ Rollercoaster (Tim, Amy, Alex) I hope to do this w/ my Dad too skipped in last yr
• Lights, Motors, Action Stunt Show we've yet to see this so this is a must for us too
• Toy Story Mania YOU WILL LOVE IT!!!!!!!! do it twice!!!!
• Backlot Tour?? - refurbed?? :confused3 this is a skip for us
• Playhouse Disney Live! another great one, better do it still while the boys like it
• Great Movie Ride?? we missed this in 08 and is a must for us...I have many notes for Michael on this one, but it is so good
• HISTK Playground so much fun
• Indiana Jones Stunt Spectacular? I agree w/ Momof2Disneyboys I'd just pick one and make sure you sit toward the exit for either show (easier out)
• Find the well what's this?
• Boat to Epcot? We did this in 05 just the opposite direction
• Villains Gift Shop I have a fun picture of me and my BF in there from '98
• Fudge shop… (I read about this on someone's TR...Kathy? Tracy? - and I LOVE fundge.) yummy!
• Photopass opportunities Ok here's what I have written down: Darth Vader saber fighting done near Jedi Training, Stitch coming out of the street on Hollywood & Sunset Blvds and Stitich, Mickey Lilo and or Minnie sitting on a bench w/ you besides they are usually near the entrance too
