I have to agree with the OP on this one. The Budget board used to be my favorite board but now I find myself spending little time here. Some days most of the posts seem to be about people's 'budget busters' or depressing financial woes. It used to be the community baord was the place where all that depressing stuff got posted! I've taken to the Cruise Board lately. Very little complaining on that board! All that said I have used the budget board for advice on financial matters, I like that the information is out there and people are so helpful, I just miss the old more upbeat feel of the Budget Board.

I don't mean this as anything personal, but could it be that the budget board is less upbeat today because we are going through an economic crisis? Times change, and people are affected. I think it is great that people who are going through difficult circumstances have a place to come for some support and suggestions.

You take from that fund...it doesn't "bust your budget". Its money you set aside for just this reason.

You still have to put that money back into your emergency fund for the next emergency. And where is that coming from - your budget. So even if you have an emergency fund, it can still be a budget buster.

Think about it. If you have a $1000 BEF and take out $800 for car repairs - where are you going to get the $800 to put back in the BEF.

Well...for many, me included until relatively recently, there IS no emergency fund. So seeing threads with budget problems, and then seeing responses by people who have such funds can be very eye opening, and can help people on their way to creating those emergency/replacement/maintenance funds.

This is absolutely right! I am someone who posted a response about a "budget busting" expense of my own this month as a way of sympathizing with a fellow DISer who wrote about their own money issues. I had an emergency fund to cover the expense but now I have to start saving to build it back up. I certainly don't have unlimited money to keep an emergency fund to cover EVERY unexpected expense - that's what makes it an unexpected expense or "budget buster" - it WASN'T in the budget!

I don't see a problem with sharing our experiences on the Budget Boards. It's a way of feeling like someone else out there understands the struggle and can offer support. What's wrong with that??

Where else can you get advice, suggestions & possibly solutions from such a varied group of people that the Dis can offer?? If we all had an unlimited supply of money, then there really wouldn't be a need for the "budget board" to begin with..I've been coming to the Dis for years, but my financial situation has changed dramatically over the last few years that I am frequenting this board, where in the past, I never ever clicked on it..I have learned a lot of useful , money saving tips & tricks..
In my case, I don't own a home, so I don't read the mortgage/selling my home etc. threads..Perhaps there is no thread moderator on purpose, this way we all can be our own personal moderator & weed out the threads that don't interest us!!

complaining about 'budget busters'? Frankly, I am tired of hearing everyone fuss about life's 'little troubles'. We all have financial issues and events but is the Disboard the place to come vent about them?

Do you CARE that we have to take a $250k mortgage to pay off his ex-wife? Or that we have to help DS buy a car or what medical bills we may have, etc?

I don't mean to sound heartless but I don't think this is the forum for whining about our personal woes. I thought it was to share budgeting tips and ways to get to Disneyworld for less money.


I agree 100%, people post the most tideous things....and most of it is not informative at all.

I don't watch soap operas either.

As for the varied topics, etc. If I need to know how to make homemade dish soap, I'll go to my simple living board. If i want support on my home organization project, I'll go to the organization website. Holiday gifts/crafts? I'll go to a crafts board.

I am here on Disboards because I am specifically interested in doing Disney in a more cost-effective manner and that's what I'd like to read about on this board. And while it is true that I can simply skip threads that don't interest me, sometimes I don't know until I do read them.

I care and I like to offer words of encouragement. Or sometimes I say a prayer for them, even if I haven't posted on their thread.

I don't like all types of threads on here, but I realize it's a board made up of diverse people and it's pretty easy for me to not click on a thread that I can't tell I won't like. It's not like the thread titles are graphic or offensive.

I also realize that what seems minor to me might not be so minor to others and what seems major to me might seem minor to others.

Actually I'd like to think I do care. I look at it this way, some times life is rough and when your trying to do the right thing and it seems like it's raining lemons on you, all you need is a friendly voice to hold on.

I don't have a problem with people using me as a friendly voice. There is strength in numbers.

Next, you never know when some one who is in the exact same posititon as you are will read your post and then have a solution that you never thought of. Information is power.

I agree.. Sometimes people just need a friendly ear.. Sometimes they are so close to the situation, they can't see a solution that might be readily available - yet someone here will point it out..

Sometimes people can avoid ending up in a similar situation after reading what has happened to someone else..

If there are threads here (or on any of the DIS boards) that don't interest me, I just skip over them..

For most people going to Disney definitely involves your budget, so I don't really see how you can separate the two.. It pretty much goes hand in hand..

I take that to mean that this isn't just a board for budgeting specifically for a Disney vacation but any aspect of budgeting and saving that may help others save money whether it be couponing, sales, reducing daily expenses, etc. If this board is only supposed to be for budgeting as it directly relates to Disney, meaning travel to and from, resort, tickets, etc., then both the title and description need to be changed.

Maybe the title needs to be something like Disney Money Saving Tips or something similar and the description something like Disney doesn't have to break the bank. Join in and learn how to have a great Disney vacation on a budget.

I have actually learned SO much from all the tips on this board that with all the money I saved on the "small things" we've been able to vacation at WDW 4 times in the last 5 years.

My dryer died this week. I went to Lowe's and did a price match.... then I went to the post office, picked up a "change of address form" and used the 10% off Lowes Coupon enclosed. I paid $349 for the Whirlpool dryer that was regular price $449.

I have the disboards to thank for that.

No I think its fine the way it is...I also find it kind of ironic that the thread above this one as I post is about a budget buster and in ONE post another Disser gave advice that worked and saved the stressed out OP a fortune

I agree with so many other PPs. This board isn't just about Disney. . .but about money and budgets in general. I have learned so much here! If you are not interested in people posting about their latest budget busting experience. . .THEN DON'T OPEN THAT THREAD!!!! Sheesh people. . .times are tough! Good for you if it's not affecting you. . .but different strokes for different folks. I for one DO want to hear about other people's hard times. . .a lot of good and learning comes from it. If a thread doesn't interest me than I pass it over. . .we don't have cable and I've never seen one episode about the Duggers. . .so I don't open that one! Given all that. . .I have a feeling that I probably could still take something away from it if I did. Open your minds and your hearts for crying out loud! Otherwise just glean what interests you in your glass houses for crying out loud.
