We're looking at a DVC membership (resale) that would enable us to travel to Disney every 18 months or so. We're excited about the concept, but a little concerned about losing the 'magic' of Disney by going so often for so many years. We love it, and can't wait to go back this fall, but can it lose it's spark after awhile? Please share your insights.

We joined DVC last year, we have stayed at OKW, and we are headed back next month to AKL, my family has the best time at Disney! We are already booked again next Feb. for SSR, and we plan to visit BWV next Summer.

The way we plan to "keep it fresh" is to do different things while we are there. For example, next month we have bought a week pass to Seaworld and Aquatica (in addition to our AP). So for a week and a half we will visit not only Disney, but two other parks as well.

The other thing about it is we plan on taking it much more laid back this visit, we want to enjoy the resorts more, and approach the vacation with a much more easy going pace, after all, we're going to be right back in a matter of months

We love our DVC, we think it is the best investment we could have made for our family.

Good luck with your decision!

As 99% of the people on here will tell you the "magic" will grow exponentially.:thumbsup2 . We started out in 2000 with 220 points and after an extra child and multiple visits we go more than when we first purchased. With the AP and the special events;MNSSHP,MVMCP,P&PP, ESPN,etc. You start borrowing or adding on.

I think that is a great question and something I have thought about before.
We only go every 18 - 24 months, so that helps. I think if we did 2 trips per year (we did that once) it would burn us out. There have been posts on these boards where people have returned from their trip and contemplated if dvc is still for them so I guess it happens to some.

We recently tried HHI and found a different kind of Disney magic there. The place just really celebrates nature and family togetherness (Walt was a big advocate for both of these). I loved it. So I think using points at HHI, Vero, and eventually CA, and HI will also be a good option when you feel you may need a break from your WDW routine.

If I ever feel that the magic is gone I will just take a break. Bank or rent points or use them elsewhere. They are always adding things and changing things at WDW so if you go every few years a lot of it is new again. The thing that really makes it seem new each time is how my family has changed between trips. To watch my kids enjoy wdw at age 2, then 4, then 7... It is really fun and different each time, and interesting to see how the "magic" changes for us as a family over time.

I think this really varies by individual. I could certainly see it happening to DW and me.

But with 200 points at BWV since 1998 we have been to WDW resorts 4 times and between HHI and VB we have had beach trips 7 times. So we tend to go to WDW about every 2-3 years. Not enough to burn out on.

Um...just in the past couple months there were threads here talking to the point that the 'magic' was losing its luster and that the 'welcome home' had lost it's meaning.

I guess my opinion is everyone's definition of 'magic' may be different and whether it gets better or fades isn't necessarily based on the fact you own DVC or not.

For some, Disney loses its appeal after the kids grow up while others enjoy it even without kids.

DVC is such a personal decision based on vacation preference, budgetary constraints, family size, etc. that it really is difficult to give advice such as you ask.

I would say do the research and make your decision based on your reality and future goals, rather than other's opinions.

It was a long thought out decision for our family - and though we wish we could have done it sooner - we think we made the informed decision at the right time.

Good luck.

:thumbsup2

Soon after becoming DVC Members we also noticed a change in our approach to visiting WDW. Out with the commando mentality and in with the wonderful vacation mentality. We now take our time and do what we want to do, when we want to do it. No more rushing around. DVC has given us a whole new view of WDW. There is so much to see, if you just take the time to look. :thumbsup2

Personally, our vacation habits have completely changed since buying DVC. When we went to Disney, it was rushed (no matter how many days we stayed) and we tried to cram everything into the trip. Now, we go and just enjoy being away from home on vacation.

For example, we went down to WDW over spring break for 7 days. While there, we only went to the parks 1 day. The rest of the time, we stayed at the pool, went to DTD, spent an evening at the Boardwalk, rented boats, etc. We're going back in 4 months and spending 5 days after a beach vacation. While there, we'll probably hit a park one day, go to a water park (depending on how "beached out" we are) and maybe try a character breakfast/dinner. Never done that before. Next year, we're planning to make reservations at Vero Beach and hit WDW either before or after the beach.

Who knows where DVC will take us long term. They're building a place in Hawaii and California has been announced. Also, with exchange options through II for the occassional trade, we felt the program was flexible for us long term.

Good luck! :goodvibes

When you need a change from WDW, use your points to take a Disney cruise. It is a great experience. They are always cruising to different places and you can pay for your cruise completely with DVC points. :cool1:

IMHO, the magic is in you.....if you enjoy Disney, then you motivate yourself
to look forward to each trip. We've been DVC members for 10+ years; and
average four to six trip to WDW annually. And look forward to the "escape" that each one provides. We don't feel compelled to do every ride every trip. Earlier the month--our second trip this year--we were there for five days....
The crowds were much larger than we normally experience since the off
season is our usual time. In five days we visited all the parks, went on
exactly one ride--Soarin--and saw two of the flower/power concerts. And
enjoyed ourselves because we expected to enjoy ourselves....mostly its up to you as the whether the magic diminishes. We make side trips to Mt Dora and other areas including state parks. One thing we do not do is visit Universal---did that many years ago and was totally turned off by dirty park, wait times twice the posted times; and rampant line jumping--who needs it?

As a new DVC member but a frequent WDW visitor I agree that much of the "magic" is what you make of it. We have been visiting WDW 2-3 times a year for close to 10 years. We already own 2 other timeshares in Orlando have expanded our length of visit from 1 week in the spring and early Dec. to 2 weeks in the spring and 3 weeks in Dec. Now that we have taken the plunge in the DVC we believe we will experience even more of the Disney magic. All of my husband's children are grown so when we go to WDW it is usually just us. But even after all this time we still love our trips to the Mouse. I like to take more time and enjoy all of the atmosphere of WDW but my husband still has the commando mentality, even there is always another trip in the plans. I have told him that now we are DVC members we need to enjoy all the DVC resorts and see the other joys they offer. So far I have not convinced him as his attitute is he does not come to WDW to stay at the resorts. We'll have to see how that goes. But for us the Disney "magic" is still going strong.

Something else I really like about DVC - and that helps us feel the "magic" - is the ability to take friends with us now and then. Recently we had a week with another family who have a daughter DD14's age, and over Spring Break DD14 took another friend. Both trips were so much fun because we had someone new to either share old favorites with or show WDW for the first time.

DD19 also got her first "solo" (ie without Mom along) trip this year - she and her friend spent their Spring break at WDW using my points.

So DVC can make some new kinds of trips possible, and that for me is a real bonus!!!

We go every year--we mix it up. We stay at different DVC--each one feels like a totally different vacation. We bought 10 day non-expire hoppers and only go to parks 2-3 days each time (we did this to stretch our $$--but it worked out well for a more relaxing vacation).
We alternate parks and do some of our favorites--for ex. we do MK in the AM and then Studios in the PM and another full day at AK. The next year we might so EP all day and a combo day for our favorite stuff. One year, we went to Seaworld for 3 days. THis summer, we are doing a waterpark and resort stuff and just doing 1 day at Studios.

I respect that the "magic" depends on each family's own circumstances, but I do think that one of the reasons I used to burn out was thinking that we had to do everything in the parks each trip (the commando regime). Now that I know that we go a couple times a year, I treat it more like a vacation home with fun nearby activities rather than a trip to a theme park with lodging thrown in. Its easier for me to keep the "magic" going when I'm more laid back in visiting the parks.

Good luck on your decision.

We joined in 2004 and the magic just keeps on giving. The only thing that, and I am really afraid about this one, are the spiraling airfares. We live in the Chicagoland area and fly. If the air fares become $$$$$ we could have issues w/getting our fixes of pixie dust!!!

With our initial purchase and our add-on, we have 335 points that enables us to go on one nice vacation per year. For me, if I were like some members and visit more twice per year, I could see the magic wearing off. It is up to you to decide how much of the magic you can take. Our one trip of 7-8 days per year is just right for us. That is one good thing about DVC, it is flexible enough for you to vary your vacations to fit your style.

well our first stay was 10 years ago when my son was 6.We bought into the BWV and go every year.It seems that our vacations have changed with time to focus on different parks and attractions but there always seems to be something new for us. This trip we figured to hit Cir de sole.We have alot of great memories in Disney and they are highlighted more when we arrive. Some people do the beach ,some climb mountains, we do Disney World. We go expecting nothing and are always pleasently surprised....:cool1:

I sure hope the magic isn't going to wear off for me, although I somehow doubt that it will. We bought with the idea of only going every 2-3 years (168 points - which with me and DW in a studio off-peak stretches quite nicely). Just going over to Florida from here in the UK is pretty novel, I think I could gladly spend a week just enjoying the pools and weather without even having to step foot in the parks.

As a Floridian, I've been going to WDW since it opened....my first visit was in '72. So what is that now, 36 years of visits? I've literally lost count of how many times I've been, but it must be at least 50 times, probably more like 75.

And I still love going. Now, it doesn't have exactly the same thrill, but I now get to experience it through my DS's eyes. He's 6, and TOTALLY into going to "Mickey Mouse's House"

DH is pretty much over going to the parks, but he LOVES our DVC accommodations. He's very much into the resort part of the experience.

I'm so spoiled by DVC. It kills me to pay almost 100 bucks for a Days Inn type room when we are traveling.

We've owned at Old Key West since 1992. We always treated it like our second home. Our 4 daughters feel like they grew up there!

Of course, things have changed over the years and we miss a lot of stuff/people from the old days. But I wouldn't say it's lost its magic. We now live in Celebration but still use our points for the occasional break at a DVC resort.

John
