lol i meant refundable. I am only saying that because my step dad still doesn't know if he's going to be able to get off from work and if we buy that ticket for him we won't be able to get our money back.

I guess I am not understanding how to book air fair, because I am on the search engine priceline and it said 270 roundtrip for air tran, then i click choose this deperate and i see choose return for another 270, i don't understand

I'm actually traveling the around the same dates as you are. I booked my airfare months ago on Delta out of DCA for about $160 or so round trip. I jumped on the price while it was available. My sister just booked her airfare about 2 weeks ago on Airtran for about $220 round trip out of Charlotte. I told her to jump on it cause I didn't want the price to go up on her. I use fly.com or kayak.com to compare flight prices. Also if there is a particular flight or two you want to track you can use yapta.com. I would consider getting my airfare as soon as you can. Prices may go down but they will certainly go up!

Refundable fares are always going to cost much more than non-refundable fares. I would go ahead and book everyone else's and hold off on your step-dad's tickets. You can always book his when he knows for sure. If you do decide to book your step-dad's just make sure you book him separately (his own confirmation number). If you have to cancel him Southwest will give you a credit to use at a later date. They will not charge you a change fee.

Do a comparison. If the non-refundable fares are reasonable, and you guys have to eat the cost of your stepdad's ticket, you might still come out ahead than if you book refundable tickets that are way more expensive.

Just making up numbers here:
Let's say the non-refundable tix are $200 pp... 5 people would cost $1000. Stepdad ends up not going but you're stuck paying the $1000 anyway.

The refundable tix are $300 pp... stepdad can't go so it's $300 x 4. or $1200.

You're still paying less by going the non-refundable amount. Crunch the real numbers you're finding and see if you at least break even.

As far as the issues with SW and the planes, remind your mom they grounded all the planes and inspected them. SW probably has the safest planes right now because they caught a problem. If other airlines have this issue they might not be aware of it.

I feel your pain. My DH is a Fireman and we have to have vacations planned a year in advance or things can get pretty dicey. There are no spontaneous trips with him. Have a great trip and I hope he gets to go with you. We are flying SW out of New Orleans becasue it is the closest and cheapest direct flight I can get. We paid about $504 total with early bird check in, I think. Just 2 of us, non stop.

Less chance of a hassle if something changes (such as flight cancellation and rescheduling) after you book, when you book directly with the airline.

You're constrained two ways:
1. Waiting for airfare to go on sale,
2. Waiting for the rest of the family to finalize their travel dates.
I think this is the whole story.

Book just your dad at the fully refundable fares and the rest of you at the lowest fares. Tell grandma that SW is most likely the safest airline to fly now...they have checked all their planes.

Yeah what there telling him is if the captin tht is there now he'll be able to go but if the captin's switch then he won't know if he can go. Yeah it sucks cuz the last couple of yrs we've had to go without him.

No need to yell or get smart. I don't have the authority to say oh yeah flights charge high because of the price of gas, they probably do, but I don't know that 100%
