Can someone PLEASE explain the whole 'quest' thing to me?

Hello~! ,

Well i have been playing vmk for a while and around halloween i stopped playing because vmk was taking over my life lol. Now i am addicted all over again but while i was gone for that few months, they came out with these quest things that is EVERYWHERE. Can someone please tell me what these quest are and how to start one and what to do??
