I am trying to pick out a new lens and think I want a 70-200 f/2.8 (both dds do ballet so trying to get better pictures of them dancing). While doing research I have found the Tamron SP 70-200 and the Tamron AF 70-200. Does anyone know the difference between these?

I already have a 50 f/2.8 (Cannon) and 18-200 f/3.5-6.3 (Tamron).

There has to be more letters/words/numbers on each of the lenses. If these are the most recent iterations, the difference should be image stabilization (Tamron's term is VC) and the high speed focusing motor. SP was also the Sony version without the VC. There is a model number on the lens. I believe the two models are A001 and A009. To figure which is which we may need the additional identifiers.

Tamron AF 70-200mm f/2.8 Di LD IF Macro Lens for Canon Digital SLR Cameras (Model A001E)

Tamron SP 70-200MM F/2.8 DI VC USD Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon EF Cameras

Okay, so one has internal focus and one has vibration control? On Amazon the top one is about 1/2 the bottom one ($769 vs. $1500). Just trying to understand the cost difference. If I'm taking indoor, low light pictures I think I want the vibration control? Thanks for your help, I know just enough to know I need a better lens for the pictures I want......

You'll probably want the VC, it's also a newer design, and is optically better than the previous model.

The first one is the older model, I think it came out around 2008. The second is the latest iteration with obviously the VC and the silent, ultra-sonic focusing motor. Some will say when photographing sports you don't need stabilization (VC) because of the higher shutter speeds used, however I like it because sometimes you don't shoot sports (fortunately my system has in-body image stabilization (IBIS). The latest Canon version of the 70-200 is $2,200. The Sigma version is $1,200. I have a Sigma for my Pentax system and am satisfied with, however my manufacturer has just introduced its own WR version for $2,300 that I think I want.

If you have a crop sensor camera, you might also want to take a look at the Sigma 50-150 f/2.8 OS (that's their image stabilization system). I had one and the photos were gorgeous and sharp. I only sold it because I upgraded to full frame and it only works on crop sensor cameras.

There are some great prices on used ones on Ebay.
