Help! I have tried and tried unsuccessfully to defrag my computer - but Windows won't let me. Everytime it starts it will run for about a minute, then I get an error that says that Windows has interrupted the procedure 10 or more times so it cannot run. How do I get Windows to stop interrupting? I read somewhere that if you start up and run it in Safe mode it would work - I just got the same old thing. I even have Defrag as a Scheduled item on my computer, but it won't let that run either.

It sounds like you've got some program still running in the background that is accessing the hard drive and changing it's contents. Defrag recognizes this and has to start the defrag process over again because the disk contents have changed. After so many attempts, it will quit.

You can do two things. First, shut down all programs that are running. You can check using CTRL-ALT-DEL to see what applications and processes are running. From the pop-up menu select the program, then click End Task. Then repeat for the next one in the list. DO NOT End the Explorer task as that is required for windows. Some items may not allow you to stop them, or they may require some other task be stopped first. Just keep selecting them until you're down to just the last one or two that keep staying there.

Booting in safe mode will stop many applications from loading at start-up, but not all.

Next run ScanDisk to make sure the disk surface is clean with no file fragments anywhere. (Be sure to check the box to automatically fix errors)

Then try defrag again.
