we've never been to a family style restaurant at disney, or anywhere else. we will be on the dining plan. do we all have to agree on the entree, or do we all get to choose one? thanks for the help
For instance, they will bring you serving plate of the various courses, usually a couple of different choices for each course. If you need more, they will bring it. As pp stated, each person will have the same # of credirs taken.
If you go to a place like Whispering Canyon where you can choose a family style skillet or a menu item, everyone in your party can choose whatever they want. If two people choose the skillet and two people choose menu items then they will bring you a skillet with food for two people (and then you can get refills as needed). Everyone is charged one dining credit. (You also get to choose a dessert...even if you have the skillet).
At someplace like 'Ohana where the only option is the family style menu, everyone gets the same offerings. There is a LOT of food though so even if you have some picky eaters there shouldn't be a problem (dessert is included in this meal...there isn't a choice). Again, this is one credit per person.

They bring out ALL the possible entrees, and you can take a little of each. There's no "ordering" involved. If one runs out, they'll bring some more of that (you can ask for more of whatever dish you want)
