Can soap hurt a dog?

I was just cleaning one of my bathrooms and I had the soap dish (with a sliver of dove beauty bar soap) on the floor.

The dog followed me into the bathroom...I heard her licking something, looked over and saw her licking the bath rug (she likes to do that - odd...) just as I was about to tell her to stop, I notice it's not the rug she's licking...it's the sliver of soap.

Now...I've sucked on quite a few bars of soap in my lifetime (thanks mom!) and the worst that ever happened to me was the gagging.

She, the dog, started making those "huffing" noises she makes right before she vomits...but she hasn't yet.

Think it's ok?

I'd call the vet, probably depends on how big the dog is and how much they might have gotten in.

One of my nephews gave his cat a bath with dish soap. The cat did what cat's do and licked it off. The cat was poisoned and died.

hmmm...think I will just to be safe.

she's just laying on the floor trying to stay cool right now though...it's nearly 90 degrees out and humid right now - LOVE it!

I know she just got a few licks in...but still...

Might make her throw up, but she should be ok. I would be worried if she ate a whole bar of soap, but a few lick didn't kill me when I was a kid!

My dog ate a basket full of those little decorative soaps once (it was on top of my toilet tank and apparently he thought I had set up a buffet in there!) He laid around the hosue most of the day, kind of lethargic, and finally vomited about 7-8 hours later.

All was well after that.

hehe - just as an update.

She only got in a few licks of the soap - didn't nibble on it or anything...called DH and he said not to worry about her, apparently she's done this in the past (nutty dog)

she never threw up...so she was fine.

She may get diarrhea so be prepared. She should be fine though.
