Can MS do this without losing my reservation?

We are in the process of buying a resale that has points expiring 11/30/12. It's a good deal with or without the extra points, but I would love to use them if I can. I am estimating it will take at least 2 months to have access to the points to make a reservation. We already have a reservation at the WLV in Oct. Once we have the new pts added, can MS 'hold' the reservation long enough to change out a couple of the nights with the soon to expire resale pts, and then link to the existing reservation? Or would we risk losing our reservation during the process?
Thanks!!!

Since you booked your reservation during the 7 month booking window, MS should be able to swap your points without canceling the reservation.

Actually, it depends. Will the new points be a true add on? Titled exactly the same way as your current contract AND the same use year? If the use year is different, it will be a separate membership, and existing reservations can not be transferred between separate memberships.

This is what I was worried about. No they will not be the same UY, and they are banked pts so I don't think I can do much else than use them before they expire. I suppose we could try to get a weekend at HHI, but it will be a challenge to find availability less than 3 months out. Hmmm, we are set to send paperwork tomorrow but we may rethink this. I would hate to see a better contract pop up as soon as we are locked into the process with this one.

Unless there is a reason for a different UY, I would rethink your purchase. Multiple UY's can be done but why make things more complicated if they don't have to be.

Good thing that Chuck brought the UY issue up. :thumbsup2

I agree. I paid slightly more on our third contract just to keep the same UY I already had.

Overall, a different UY will benefit us for what we want to do with these pts. It is an HHI contract and we want it to use in the Summer. We have an Oct UY, and June/July trips would fall in the last four months. Any Disney trips I make with these points would be totally separate from our OKW trips, except in this first year where I have the use or lose in 3months situation...

Ugh, it is a good deal (compared to the others available, which isn't very many!) But it hurts to think of possibly wasting so many pts! I am torn today, I want to wait for a 'better' contract, but I don't want to risk not getting a reservation at HHI for Summer 2013.

I would be happy to switch to SSR or OKW at the last minute (to use the points of course!), but I can't imagine there would be availability less than 2 months out at either in Oct. I would be willing to move the trip to Nov but I am not sure we would have any better luck.

Hmmmm....

If it were me, and I went ahead with the contract, I would probably go ahead and switch the reservation to the new membership with the banked points so that I didn't lose them, especially if you are comfortable and flexible with switching to another resort.

With different use years, the only way to modify that prior reservation to use the banked points is to cancel a night or some nights at the beginning or end of your already existing reservation and then reserve those particular nights with the banked points and link the reservations. That transaction requires the category of room you already have to be separately available for reserving with the banked points when you call after closing (probably unlikely when reserving only two to three months out) and, of course, you might not be able to use up the exact number of banked points you have.

If the contract makes sense otherwise then I wouldn't cancel it based on those few points. And flexibility is key in getting a last minute reservation which it sounds like you have in this case. Depending on what part of Oct and what size villa it may not be as hopeless as you think. And there are cancellations all of the time so picking up something could happen. I wouldn't bank on it but I wouldn't dismiss it from happening.

I have been coming up with possible scenerios of dates/points to find the best way to utilize as many pts as possible. I am trying to hold on to as many of my OKW pts as possible to use next year instead. If SSR or OKW has availability, I will try to book the nights and link the reservations. Worst case scenerio we head to HHI for a weekend (sounds terrible ;))

If I can manage to use the points and maybe even bank a few of my OKW, I will be very pleased. I'll look at it as a challenge that will prepare me for the annoyance of choosing a new UY, lol. Thanks for the help ya'll :goodvibes Here's hoping we pass ROFR!

Once you get the points in your new account, call MS and ask them. For a single owner of multiple master contracts, they will ofter allow transfers of banked/borrowed points as the need arises just as in this situation. Once they are transferred, you could do as stated above and substitute the points. Worst case scenario is book any nights available with the new contact and cancel from the old reservation then link all reservations. Wait list any days needed and you have expiring points to use.

So I *may* be able to transfer the new (banked 2010) pts to my OKW account and do the easy switch of my current reservation? That sounds awesome if they'll do it! I will definitely call and see if it's possible once the pts are available. Thanks Dean :thumbsup2

You've got it. Once you have the points in your account I'd simply call and ask how best to handle the situation. If they don't make it easy, ask if you can transfer these points to accomplish your goals.

Banked points can not be transferred.

Banked points can not be transferred.
Technically that's the rule, however, it's been done many times over the years with multiple contracts of a single owner. It's generally case by case and in situations were the rules get in the way. An example would be a DCL or ABD reservation where all points for a given reservation must be in a single contract. Whether they will make the exception in this situation, I can't answer for DVC, but it wouldn't surprise me.
