Hi all,

I just wondered if you are able to pay for things in shops, restaurants etc using a Visa Debit Card??.
I do not have a credit card as i always thought they were a bad idea, well for me anyway. ( I would get in soooo much debt)
Also how do you go about charging things to your room and paying at the end of your stay, could this be done by debit card or euro's even, or again would you have to have a credit card??

I'm almost certain you can, Visa is one of DLP's official sponsors. When I went last my girlfriends Visa Electron was accepted.

Should you get scared of using it there are a few cash machines dotted around the place.

No problem at all as long as it is a Visa debit. Be aware if money is an issue for you, you will be charged commission on each transaction or cash withdrawl, whereas getting euros in cash at the Post Office is commission free. We tend to use a mix of both.

Thanks for that.

So if i give my debit card details when i check into my hotel i can charge for things that i have brought and eaten to my room and then they just charge it all to my card at the end of my stay, have i got that right??

I do not think i will be using the ATM'S although it's good to know that there are some there. I would rather take some euros and use my debit card throughout my stay.

That's exactly what I do, take €100-200 to pay for snacks and small purchases. The rest I just put on my card. I don't like taking lots of money and can't be bothered messing with travellers cheques. Paying by card is far easier.

I've never charged anything to my room (I don't trust myself!!!) but I can't see it being a problem.

OMG, I have just looked up and seen how much my bank would charge for say ten 25 euro debit card purchases and i have to say i am shocked.

That would be quite a lot in charges over the course of 5 days.( the rate my daughter spends it will)
As much as i hate to carry it around i think it is going to have to be payment by euros for me.

If you open a Flexaccount at Nationwide you don't get charged a penny for using your card. You also get the actual exchange rate (1.484 as opposed to the 1.481 you get at the post office) It's very good if you go abroad alot.

I don't know if debit and prepaid make a big difference in acceptance, but I used to pay everything with my Amex Travelers Cheque Card (Prepaid) with no problems.

Too bad that card type will be cancelled by Amex. It was a nice way of "Disney cost control" :)

Oliver

edit: oh and there were no extra fees btw (but also no conversion to be done as I had a EURO account)

I agree. We have a Nationwide credit and debit card solely for holidays abroad as our primary bank should be wearing a mask like Dick Turpin with the charges :)

I think to charge things to your room, you have to have a credit card.

If your taking euros try Marks & Spencer as we always get a better rate with them.
