My sister in law is giving us points, but we do not want to stay in the villas, we were thinking about Grand Floridian, how do i know how many points to use and can i even use them for that resort?

Yes you can use DVC points at "normal" disney resorts. The drawback is you get less bang for your buck. Meaning it costs more points to stay at a deluxe resort than at a villa.

I don't have the point chart for GF handy but your sister in law should have the book and access to website that gives you the point breakout.

You can use them - but it will probably cost at least 2-3 times the number of points needed to stay in a Villa, plus there is a $95 fee for non-villa stays.

The minimum to stay at the Grand Floridian (value season, weeknight, garden view) is 41 points per night. To stay in a two-bedroom at SSR on a weeknight during the holiday season (December 24-31) costs 45 points per night.

Not to mention the $95 charge to stay at a non-DVC resort.

Example:

Paying cash for CBR in June...9 nights (trip planned w/ ext. family well before bought in DVC). Would use 249 points for this trip at this moderate resort.

Same nights at my deluxe home resort for studio villa:
V: 111 pts.
S: 132 pts.
SV: 156 pts.
C: 183 pts.
Could do a 1 BR for around the 249 in the end.

Like others said, not exactly the most "cost-effective" use of points in the end.

And in all my Disney resort stays at both DVC and non-DVC resorts ranging from Value to Deluxe.... the GF was the worst. I wouldn't waste the points. It's a pretty hotel, but fails to measure up to it's adverstising!

I agree.

i think the gf is just grand and we visit there and have dinner at every trip to wdw..... but with those pts you could have a 1br or 2br villa. just think how much more comfortable your family will be with more room to spead out and more bath space, not to mention a kitchen. that is true comfort on a vacation. :thumbsup2 the gf rooms are lovely but with no more room than a regular resort room.

I'd choose a 1 bedroom or larger villa in ANY of the DVC resorts over even the best suite at GF. Just the kitchen, laundry in the room, huge bathrooms and in room Jacuzzi make it so much better than GF, and the point cost will be less than half of GF. Since reserving non/DVC resorts is an out of system trade for DVC, you will pay a premium in points and also have that $95 exchange fee. Just not worth it in my book, for lesser accommodations.

(My first posting!)

My family is in love with the Contemporary, but I just can't swallow the cost when the value resorts are 1/3 the price. But if we could rent points at $11.00 each, depending on how many points it would take for a Sun-Thurs stay, we would be able to swing that.

Anyone have any idea where to find the points charts for non-DVC properties? And any problems with making reservations?

It almost never makes sense to rent points to stay at a non-DVC resort. The cheapest possible stay in the CR is 30 points/night. That's Sun-Thus, Garden Wing, no view, value season. You'd be able to get that through CRO for less than $330/night.

A Magic Kingdom view room in the tower would be 44 point during value season and up to 63 points over Christmas.

WOW! That certainly answers my questions!
We will now start looking at the Boardwalk...

Thanks everyone -- I LOVE this site!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
