Ds14 was helping to put groceries away & put a huge pack of ground beef in the freezer. I had planned to separate them prior to freezing. I cooked the whole pack now. Can I refreeze part of it?

I do this all of the time. If you freeze on a flat cookie sheet and then transfer it to the bag, you only have to take out what you need. This is great when you are in a hurry and can put the cooked hamburger in a pot and within 5 minutes have sauce for spaghetti. I cook chicken and then freeze it. I actually put most items on cookie sheet until they freeze, transfer to freezer bags, this makes if so easy when you just need 1 or 2 cups, you do not have thaw out the entire package.

Yes, as long as you have cooked it, it can be refrozen with no problem whatsoever.

Yes ground beef can be refrozen cooked or raw. If it is raw it should only be refrozen one time. If it is cooked it should only be reheated one time. I manage a kitchen. We order out ground meat in 20 pound boxes. We have to refreeze all the time.

Regardless of whether it is cooked first or not, each refreezing degrades the quality a bit more, and the meat tends to get less tender. Fortunately you can usually get away with one RE-freezing.

If I have a frozen hunk of meat that is too big for one sitting, I don't thaw it all. Instead I cut off what I need using a saw. Yes, a carpenter's saw or hacksaw.
