Can I pack water bottles in checked luggage?

Ok, here's the thing. We always take about 12 water bottles with us for in the hotel and in the theme parks. I've always packed them in a carry-on suitcase and brought it with us on our Disney trips. Now with the new restrictions, I obviously can't do that.

So, can I pack the water bottles in checked luggage instead? They would be brand new and I don't think they would leak. I was thinking about putting them in Ziploc bags or trash bags just in case. Do I need bubblewrap too? :thumbsup2

Would love to hear from someone first hand who has done this. Is this OK? Thanks for the info in advance! :goodvibes

yes we did it for our May trip, but with the new restrictions expect your bags to get checked :sunny:

And they didn't leak? They're going to be in a suitcase by themselves, but I don't want to ruin the suitcase. :goodvibes

Our's were brand new, sealed bottles of Poland Spring and they did not leak. If you are talking about bottles that have been opened and refilled, I would just pack them empty and fill them at the hotel....or put them in plastic zip lock bags.

Edit: They were not wrapped in plastic or anything...just tossed in their with my clothes and everything!

Yeah, they would be BRAND NEW and never opened bottles. I figured the companies seal them really well, but just wasn't sure about the pressure in the plane, suitcase being tossed around, etc.

I always travel with a case of water and a red bull. I put the case of water in a garbage bag twist the top of the bag and then pull it back over the bottles of water again. I also don't take the water out of the plastic case. I don't think I have ever had a problem with the water but I once had a can of red bull open and wouldn't you guess it was the first time I did not wrap them. That poor Belle dress took most of the liquid.

My husband flew about a month ago and decided to try an experiment- he froze several bottles of coke and water and stuck them in his checked bags- and a few in his carry on too (no restrictions then)-

As a precaution he put them in the really big ziplock bags they have- and all traveled safely to his destination.

On the way home- they were no longer frozen but he again checked some of the unopened but thawed bottles and still had no problem with leaks or anything

We flew on Friday and had to pack our water. We wrapped each one in bubble wrap and put them in our suitcases. They were fine--no leaks at all. We saved our bubble wrap because we are going again the end of September.

For the love of god what is the point to all this? You are not going to to a third world country, I heard they have a Wal-Mart (gasp) and a Publix!

I am just seeing myself on a plane and them announcing -----Sorry Folks we must turn around ...there is an unknown liquid spewing all over the cargo hold!

Please stop the madness!!!! :rotfl2:

I am guessing that it depends if the cargo is pressurized or not.

I was talking to an airline employee about the change in weight limits over the past years. If you are a coach passenger, you cannot go over 50 pounds per bag (75 if you are first class) without adding a surcharge. I was thinking about how the carryon restrictions must be forcing people to pack more stuff in their checked bags... Now, you may need to think about weight not just the leaking!

Good luck!

How about mailing your water to the resort in which you are staying at? That is what we are doing. We are sending it via FEDEX a day or two before we leave. The reason why we are doing this is because we don't want to use all of our DDP snacks on water. We want to use them on actual snacks!

We ordered water from staples with free shipping (staples reward member) and had it delivered to the hotel a day before we got there.

I think the reason people are doing this is because some of us don't rent cars and have no way of getting out of the World. We take a plane and take the magical express back and forth to the airport.

there are also food delivery services that will deliver to all Disney Resorts. Wegoshop.com and gardenGrocer.com are two of them

Also as another poster mentioned, there are weight restrictions on luggage. If you are over 50lbs you can't do the curbside check in and have to pay extra and wait in line!!

I carry glass jars filled with liquids (Like specialty drinks I find, wine, etc) and have never had an issue. If a glass jar can make it, a plastic jug could easily.
I did wrap a shirt around the jars, but that's it.
however, I do agree with the people on just buying it there...they sell it in WDW and if you don't want to do that, you can get free shipping with staples. All you have to do is sign up for a free rewards card.

You can also get to either the Boardwalk or Downtown Disney and walk across the street from either of them to the Hess station and buy water. It is a bit cheaper than buying in the WDW gift shops. Probably the DTD Hess station is your better bet, since you can get a bus to and from any resort to DTD. The Hess station is located closer to the marketplace end, I think.

Thanks so much!

I LOVE the Staples idea!  I am already a Rewards member and get free shipping! I didn't even think to look there for water! :rotfl:

So, does the resort just hold it then until check-in? Even if I order it right before we leave, it would be there for the rest of the week, if not the first day! Do I just send it to Disney's POP Century address? Does Disney tell you you have a package or do they take it to your room? :goodvibes How did you do this Lorikr65 or anyone else who shipped it to Disney?

Side Note: We are staying on-site, with no rental car. We are using Magical Express and I always just took the water with us. I know Disney sells water bottles, but they are way overpriced!!! We prefer to buy a 6 pack for almost as much as 1 water bottle costs! We drink a lot b/c it's so hot there and they come in handy big time! I am just looking for advice to revise our plans due to the heightened security on planes. No negatives, just advice. Thanks! :thumbsup2

I second the Staple idea. With free shipping you can get a case of water, delivered to your hotel room for around $7. Takes about three minutes to fill out the form the rewards card and another 3 minutes to order. That has to be worth not going through the fuss of packing water and the worrying about what may happen.

I'm glad to hear more about the Staples and grocery ideas, but would like to suggest one other idea if decent water is all you need. There have been quite a few threads about Brita water bottles as individual size bottles that will nicely filter the "less-than-tasty" tap water in Florida. We have used these with great success. You can fill them in your room or for free in the parks (at fountains or with free cups of ice water at counter service). We have ours in little wraps with a clip so we can attach them to us or to a bag for convenience. They are empty (or should be with the new restrictions) when you pack them, so they are light weight.

Downside...the Brita Fill and Go ones seem to no longer be readily available (threads on this, too). One substitute brand some have recommended is purewater2go.com. If you want more info, try a search on this site.

Just an idea... Good luck either way! :wizard:

You can get water filter bottles, then you dont have to take water with you!! Not only that, you can carry the bottles on the plane with you because there is no liquid in them. Then you just fill them up wherever you are.
