Can I modify a package reservation?

We would like to find a way to make a trip this fall work for us. I am not sure if we will be able to do it and if we can I don't know whether we will be able to do 5,6, or 7 nights. If I make a reservation now (to take advantage of the current promotion for free dining) for 7 nights, can I later take off the last two nights and still keep my package and discount? Or does any change to the package void the reservation?

You won't have a problem shortening your trip by a couple of nights. But to do it without incurring a change fee, you would have to do it more than (I believe) 14 days from checkin. If you need to cancel, you must do it more than 45 days from checkin (to get your deposit back).

If you downgrade (reduce the price of) a package within 45 days of arrival you are assessed a $50 change fee.

They generally don't charge that if you were to upgrade the package. But they do seem to have an extra fee of $15 for any change to a package made within 14 days of arrival. So if you downgrade a package within 14 days of arrival you may be paying them $65 to do it.

So I might incur a fee, but I would still keep the package discount (free dining or a room rate discount)? I might not be able to add nights though, right? So better to book the longest trip we might take and then reduce nights if needed?

If you remove nights you'll keep the discount.

If you add nights, there would have to be discounted nights available to add, and I'm not sure you could add them and keep the discount after the discount expires.

I thought you would have to have the minimum numbers of days for that package. In other words, if the package was with 7 days you get Free Dining (not six, not five), I would be surprised that they would allow you to decrease the number of days and still keep your Free Dining. If the package specified 5 days for Free Dining, then perhaps just the fee.
But then what do I know?

This is a good point. I hadn't considered that. The current free dining requires a 5 night stay. We would do at least that long. We would just like to be able to do another day or two if money allows. I don't think there is a minimum night stay on the current room only discounts. I was wondering about booking with a discount (within the requirements for the discount) for 7 days and then only being able to do 5 (still within the requirements of the discount).

Free dining does not require a five night stay. It is a minimum 3 night stay and maximum 14 night stay, plus at least 2 day park tickets as part of the package.

The current free dining requires a 5 night stay.

If you're looking at Disney's Special Offers page it shows a 5 night/6 day vacation, but it's just an example to show how much it would cost and subtly imply that this is what you have to book. In reality Free Dining requires only a minimum 3 Night stay and 2 day tickets for everyone.
