Can I hook up laptop to main computer to download files?

Probably a real dumb question, I make no claims to being computer smart. I have some files on main computer I want to put on laptop. I know I can copy them to removable memory and then upload them but I started wondering why I can't just hookup the laptop via USB cable and transfer directly. Will this work? Thanks
