If I rent a car now and then find a lower rate can I cancel the original reservation without penalty? I am assuming I can but just want to be sure.

Most times, yes - but I would strongly caution you to check with your specific agency and find out. I know Budget allows cancellations without penalty as long as you give 24 hours notice. Alamo doesn't take a credit card at reservation, so I would assume no penalty is taken for cancellations.

Most Car Rental places do not charge anything for a cancelled reservation as long as you cancel ahead of time.Like the above poster stated I would check out the cancellation policy of the company you plan on renting from to make sure. I've rented many times and have never been charged for the cancellation...it's only if you don't cancel and end up being a 'No Show' that they charge you!

Many of them don't ask for credit card info or anything when the ressie is made on-line, so they would have trouble charging you even if you were a no-show. I have cancelled many times when a better rate came out and never had any trouble.
